The Living Word

D ear parishioners, the weeks have rolled by. Next Thursday and Friday will be the last days of term for our parish schools. What a

strange and unforgettable year this has been for our children. Those in Year 6 will be leaving the familiarity of their primary schools and find themselves in a new school come September. We hope their Catholic education so far will bear them in good stead and prepare them for the many challenges, choices and decisions that lie ahead. Let us remember all our children, and, by extension their parents and guardians, in our prayers.

St Peter’s & Our Lady’s

T he re-opening of the churches moves on. St Joseph’s will be having a Mass to which parishioners are invited

to attend on a first-come, first-served basis (see opposite). St Peter’s still has work to do to ensure a safe opening for public Mass. I thank all those who have offered (or who might offer) to act as stewards and/or cleaners. The first public Mass is planned for Sunday 26 July at 8.00 am. This gives us sufficient time to train our volunteers and arrange the church in a safe manner to confidently re-open.

O nce St Peter’s is up and running, we will be able to share the experience and know-how to re-open Our

Lady’s. Effectively we need to garner a sense of renewed and shared confidence in ourselves to return to Mass. I ask for your prayers to ensure that our preparation is sound. As ever, please continue to support your churches with prayers, encouragement, donations and other practical support. If you can help in stewarding or cleaning (or both!) please email [email protected] or call 07927 929204. Please leave a voicemail if necessary. Please look at the website (catholicleamington.org.uk) for updates.

St Joseph’s

P ublic Mass begins on Monday. We are limited to

40 people on a "first-come, first-served basis" in Church safely and for the time being there will only be 9.00 am Mass on

Sunday. Confessions as usual on Saturday. If people who are retired could aim to go to a morning Mass and leave the evenings for those who are at work. For the time being if people could limit themselves to one Mass a week so as many people as possible get chance to go attend.

C onfessions: the Sacrament of Reconciliation is available on Saturdays from 10.00-10.30 am. Please

come to the Narthex and wait until you are called in. This is a social distancing open confession inside the church.

with the practicalities of public Mass coming back this week, Exposition and Devotions are suspended until further notice.

S unday Hymn: Today the hymn is Jerusalem. From now on, until further notice, there will be no singing

at Mass.

R equests for the Seven-Day Candle intentions (£5.00) are available from 27 September onwards.

Please put requests through the Presbytery door.

S t Joseph's Whitnash SVP welcomes you to join its new Facebook group. Learn more about the

CATHOLIC LEAMINGTON: Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time (A) Sunday 12 July 2020

I was recently informed by Adam Hardy (Director of Education for the Archdiocese of Birmingham) that

Trinity Catholic School will become part of the Our Lady of Lourdes Multi-Academy Company, largely based in Alvechurch and Redditch. Apparently this is in line with the current policy of the Diocese: for schools to be assimilated into these organisations. Sadly neither our Deanery Parishes nor primary schools were consulted.

A lack of communication and consultation has unfortunately become the norm since the governing

body was suspended and the Independent Executive Board appointed by the Local Education Authority and the Diocese. Multi-academy companies are seen as the best way forward for better funding, and working together to aid a sharing of resources between schools.

A s a unique community of schools in Warwickshire the feeder schools of Trinity were of the original family

of Catholic education in this area. It is hard to see any natural connection with Alvechurch and Redditch so let us pray this amalgamation of Trinity School will be successful following the difficulties it has endured since

the School Transport Agreement between the Local Authority and our secondary school was ended.

A s a parish priest with more catholic schools than most parishes, you will know how committed I am to

supporting the Catholicity of our schools. We work together to provide a solid Catholic foundation for the children. This is part and parcel of our commitment to sound moral values based on the teaching of the Gospel. It is the reason why many non-Catholic parents are keen for our schools to educate their children. We do not have unlimited resources and the financial management is an example of how to get the best out of very little.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to all teachers, staff and governors who work and help manage our

schools; and Emma Rayment who, as Youth Officer for Catholic Leamington and Warwick, has helped to support and direct the children in their faith (even during lockdown) and who is a part-time Lay Chaplain at Trinity School. Their unstinting commitment has been exemplary. pray for them in this current situation.

Fr John.

T ales of the unexpected:

A major pro-life victory An attempt to hijack the UK Government’s flagship Domestic Abuse Bill with two extreme abortion proposals has failed, in a major pro-life victory. Spokesperson for Right to Life UK, Catherine Robinson said: “This is a major victory for the unborn child and women facing unplanned pregnancies. These amendments would have left the unborn child with considerably worse protections and removed many of the current safeguards which protect women facing unplanned pregnancies. Many thousands contacted their MPs who, in turn, received more emails ahead of this vote than they have ever received ahead of an abortion vote.

The failed proposals were radically out of step with the opinions of women on abortion. Polling from Savanta ComRes on whether time limits for abortion should be increased shows that only 1% of women wanted the time limit to be extended; in contrast, 70% of women favour a reduction in time limits; 77% of women agree that doctors should be required to verify in person that a patient seeking an abortion is not under pressure from a third party to undergo the abortion, and 91% of women agree that gender-selective abortion should be explicitly banned by the law.

Although Sea Sunday in the UK has been postponed until December, due to the uncertainty around coronavirus, the Vatican has asked us all to continue to pray for seafarers, fishermen and their families. We invite you to join us in prayer at midday on Sunday to pray The Angelus. Please join our Immingham port chaplain Steve Willows as we remember them at this time on FB https://www.facebook.com/StellaMarisOrg/posts/10158799905328938
