CATHOLIC NEWS BULLETIN ARCHDIOCESE OF DURBAN JUNE 2017 WINTER LIVING THEOLOGY 25 – 27 July 2017 Retreat 28 – 30 July 2017 The Jesuit Institute would like to invite you to this year's Winter Living Theology: The title of this year’s series is “Finding God in Addiction: a Pastoral response to addiction and recovery”. The series will be presented by Fr. Thomas Weston SJ. Addiction comes in many forms – alcohol, drugs, porn, gambling etc. – so Fr Weston will offer some insight into the dynamics involved and how we might respond pastorally to addicts. He will explore, in the series, topics like ‘The gift of desperation – crisis, emergency and reaching out for help’, ‘A brief history of recovery movements’, ‘One addict helping another’, ‘Cleaning up the mess’, ‘Progress not perfection’ and ‘The love of God and addicts’. Fr Weston is himself a recovering alcoholic. He has been sober for 40 years and has been involved in 12-step programs as well as giving retreats and workshops. He believes, from experience, that addiction can be overcome with the assistance of others and the help of God’s grace. He designed the series for those who struggle with addiction, their family and friends as well as those who are involved in responding pastorally to addicts. This year we have changed the format of WLT. Fr Weston will not only give the lecture series but, also, offer a weekend retreat for addicts, those in recovery, loved ones and friends affected by any form of addiction. The retreat will run after the 3-day lectures from the Friday evening to Sunday lunch in Durban and Port Elizabeth. 34

THANK YOU

“Everybody’s Birthday” the fundraising event held at Kwa Kristo Umsindisi Catholic Church, Kwa Mashu on in favour of the Mini World Youth Day, was an enjoyable and fun filled day. Acknowledgements go the Catholic Women’s Association for initiating this event and to all the Sodalities for their help and support and to the many other people who helped make this event a success, especially our Cardinal. Without their involvement this would not have been possible.

A special vote of thanks is extended to:

Fr Zakhele Nzama and his parishioners, the hosting parish for their kindness and generosity in offering to host this event and for their unfailing assistance on the day. Their magnificent hall and ample parking facilities were very much appreciated.

And to all Parishes who took tickets in support of the function and their generous monetary donations for the purchasing of food items.

Acknowledgements:

Ballito/Shakaskraal, St Francis Xavier Bluff, Our Lady of Fatima Durban North, St Dominic’s and Embo Hillcrest, Ikwezi Lokusa Imbali, KwaMpumuza, St Joseph’s Matikwe, Phoenix/Mt Edgecombe, Holy Family Newlands East, St. Mary’s Pmb, St Anthony’s Pmb, Our Lady of Good Help Verulam, Virginia/Umhlanga, Christ the King Wentworth, Our Lady of Lourdes Westville and St. Joseph’s Morningside.

There are still some parishes who we hope to still receive donations in lieu of their unsold tickets and for this we thank you in advance.

A musical extravaganza is in the pipeline for October 2017 in aid of the Mini World Youth Day. Watch the Bulletin for more details. This is an initiative by the Catholic Women’s League and St. Anne’s Sodality which we hope you will support.
