We will have an anticipated Mass at Divine Providence on Wednesday, August 14th at 7:00pm and on the Holy Day, Thursday, August 15th at 8:00am at Divine Infant Jesus.

RENEW MY CHURCH UPDATE The Naming Committee is busy tallying the “Naming Cards” that were submitted the past 2 weekends. Your involvement has been and will continue to be an important part of the unification. Once they are done tabulating, the committee will provide the parish with the top 3 choices. Parishioners of both churches are deeply devoted to the name on the cornerstone of each church so we would like to include another choice for the final round; DIVINE INFANT and PROVIDENCE, please let us know if you would like this name included. On Saturday, October 5th at 4:00pm at Divine Providence we will celebrate a special Unity Mass in recognition of our new Parish. Mass will be followed by hospitality. We are seeking volunteers to plan the Mass and post Mass activities. Please contact John Maher our Operations Director at 708-562-3364 (Ext. 15) or at [email protected], if you are interested in volunteering for this special event. Your participation is greatly appreciated. Due to the Unity Mass, the 5:00pm Mass at Divine Infant Jesus will be cancelled on October 5th. In addition, a small devoted group of parishioners are diligently working on the Renew My Church activities. We are hoping to increase our team and would greatly appreciate your participation. Please call John at the rectory if you would like to become more involved in the unification of the new Parish. Once again, we ask for your patience and understanding as we brave the waters of this journey. Change is not easy; however, working together building our new parish will bring us to a closer and deeper relationship with God and with each other.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

USING OUR TIME WISELY

A jar of honey lasts practically forever. The oldest jar of honey ever discovered was over five thousand years old. Honey is quite different from market-fresh produce, then; because most fruits and vegetables last only a few days, we treat them carefully. At this time of summer, we rush to find recipes for cherries and cucumbers so we won’t waste a single one. We wouldn’t feel that same urgency about honey.

In our own way, we are as delightful and fragile as ripe produce. Today’s readings urge us not to spoil, but to make good use of our limited time on earth. Ecclesiastes reminds us that because God provides for us now and always, we can manage our daily affairs without anxiety. Saint Paul encourages the Colossians to keep thoughts of heaven in everything they do, and Jesus himself asks us to treasure not earthly wealth, but God alone. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Kindness - Living The Ideal THANK YOU

by Madisyn Taylor

Kindness expands the light within us and reaches out to touch the light in others as well. Kindness is an ideal that is easily accessible to all of us. We all know that a small act of kindness can make our journeys lighter and more enjoyable. Even bringing an instance of kindness to mind can put a smile on your face days or weeks later or perhaps even inspire you to share kindness with another. Though it may seem simple to the point of insignificance, many cultures throughout the world and history have recognized kindness as a powerful virtue. It may be the simplest way to experience and share all the grandest ideals of humanity. We can make the choice to act from the best place within ourselves at any time, while simultaneously recognizing the highest potential in another with the smallest of acts, nourishing the seed of hope in each soul we encounter. In a way, kindness acts as the oil that makes the engine of our world move more smoothly and with less friction. We can still get where we are going but the ride is more pleasant, and those around us can share in the ideal world that we help to create. We are all fortunate that kindness is limitless in its supply and available to everyone. When we act in ways that confirm our ideals, we make the ideal our reality. Then, instead of affirming the experience of struggle and competition, we can shift our experience to the reality of ease and pleasurable camaraderie with the fellow citizens of the world. Whether giving way to someone in traffic or letting someone go ahead of us in line, donating money or sharing our homes in a crisis, we actively create an act of kindness and giving with every choice we make. The smallest gesture can bring a smile to light the shadow of an unpleasant situation or remove tension from a difficult task, but it's effects can echo and extend far beyond the moment. We can be sure that we will receive a kindness in return but giving is its own reward. Kindness expands the light within us and reaches out to touch the light in others as well giving us all a glimpse of the glow that has the power to enlighten our world.

The Dedication of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major Feast Day ~ August 5

When you hear the word church, what do you think of? Do you think of the priests and people of your own parish? Do you think of a Sunday morning when families of the parish gather to celebrate the Eucharistic liturgy? Do you picture a stately building with a round dome, pointed towers, and stained glass windows? The word church has a variety of meanings. Today’s feast focuses our attention on a church building, a basilica called St. Mary Major. Tradition says that in August 352 the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to a wealthy nobleman in Rome. She asked that a church be built on the spot where he would find snow. On that summer day, snow did mysteriously appear and a church was built on the spot and dedicated to Our Lady of the Snows. Apart from the story, however, we know that a church was built on that spot in the fourth century and was rebuilt in 434. The church was also rededicated to Mary, the Mother of God. This title of Mary was protected by the ecumenical council of Ephesus. Today St. Mary Major is the largest church in the world dedicated to Our Lady. This church is called a patriarchal church, one where the pope officiates on certain occasions. There is a special altar in this church used by the Holy Father and by others with special permission. On a deeper level, this feast reminds us that Mary has been reverenced throughout the history of the Church as our Mother. As she foretold in her prayer, the Magnificat, “All generations will call me blessed” (Luke 1:48).

from Saints and Feast Days, by Sisters of Notre Dame of Chardon, Ohio

~Transfiguration of Our Lord~

The Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord recalls the revelation of Christ's glory on Mount Tabor in the presence of three of His disciples, Peter, James, and John. Christ was transfigured before their eyes, shining with divine light, and He was joined by Moses and Elijah, representing the Old Testament Law and the prophets. The Transfiguration occurred in the early months of the year, after Jesus revealed to His disciples that He would be put to death in Jerusalem, and before He made His way to Jerusalem for the events of His Passion during Holy Week.

The Transfiguration was a special event in which God allowed certain apostles to have a privileged spiritual experience that was meant to strengthen their faith for the challenges they would later endure. But it was only a temporary event. It was not meant to be permanent. In the same way, at certain times in this life, God may give certain members of the faithful (not all of the faithful, all the time), special experiences of his grace that strengthen their faith.

We should welcome these experiences for the graces they are, but we should not expect them to continue indefinitely, nor should we be afraid or resentful when they cease. They may have been meant only as momentary glimpses of the joy of heaven to sustain us as we face the challenges of this life, to help strengthen us on the road that will ultimately bring us into the infinite and endless joy of heaven.

THE FIRST HOUR OF YOUR MORNING BELONGS TO GOD. TACKLE THE DAY’S WORK THAT HE CHARGES YOU WITH, AND HE WILL GIVE YOU THE POWER TO ACCOMPLISH IT.

- St. Teresa Benedicta
