THE FJB BLOG

M A S S I N T E N T I O N S Dear Parishioners, Happy St. Patrick’s Day! It is a day when everyone is Irish ♣. Believe it or not I am 25% Irish on my mom’s side. Today we welcome Bishop Perez to our 9:00 am Mass. He is here at the invitation of the Eastside Irish American Club who uses our church every year to start their St. Patrick’s Day with Mass. It is also the Second Sunday of Lent. On the first Sunday of Lent, our Gospel always tells the story of Jesus' temptation in the desert. On the second Sunday, we always hear the story of Jesus' Transfiguration, moving from Jesus' retreat to the desert and temptation by the devil to the glory shown in Jesus' Transfiguration. In the Transfiguration we encounter the three disci-ples experiencing and seeing Jesus in both his Humanity and his Divinity. For us today, there are those “God moments” when we recognize God working in our lives in all His Glory. We recognize the power, majesty, and love of God. On Wednesday, March 20, 2019 our parish, as well as all of the parishes in the Diocese, will offer “An Evening of Confession” from 5:00 – 8:00 pm. Parishioners are asked to evange-lize by inviting family or friends who are away from the Church to join in this special Lenten practice. Priests at all parishes will be present for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. As Pope Francis says, “The joy of God is the joy of forgiveness.” More information is available at www.welcomecatholics.com. This Wednesday after the Noon Mass, we will have another Soup & Conversations. This is a time to enjoy a simple (but very delicious) soup lunch. I really look forward to these every year. It an opportunity to ask me anything you like as we have a conversation about matters of faith, morals, parish, and world events. It is free and there is no need to register. Just come to the parish office after noon Mass or at 12:30 pm. Don’t forget about our Friday Fish Fry, followed by Mass & Stations of the Cross at 7 pm. This is a great way to spend your Friday evening in Lent. At all Masses next weekend (March 23 & 24) we will offer the Anointing of the Sick to anyone who is suffering physically, emotionally, and/or spiritually. We do this twice a year. While I know it adds a few minutes to Mass, many people tell me that they are very moved by the beauty of the Sacrament. It is a great opportunity to pray for our brothers and sisters who are suffering, sometime silently with no one knowing. The Sacrament is not for those who have the sniffles or the common cold. The Anointing is for all those who are elderly, facing surgery of any kind, have terminal illness, cancer, chronic diseases such as diabetes or arthritis, those suffering from serious emotional illness such as depression, and those suffering from spir-itual desolation such as a “dark night.” If you do have one of the above mentioned illnesses I strongly encourage you to come forward (or we will come to you) to receive the Sacrament. It is the outward and concrete sign of Jesus’ companionship with you as you share in His cross of suffering. As a community of faith we are called to walk with you and to share and support you. Certainly physical healing is possible and some will experience that, but the Sacrament can definitely help to bring a sense of spiritual, emotional, and physical peace. Make it a great week! See you in Church. Peace, Fr. John
