GOSPEL REFLECTION
Advent is a season of hope and expectation. We are invited to prepare joyfully for the coming of Christ. He comes in history (his conception and birth), in mystery (through the sacraments, and especially the Eucharist), and in majesty (at the Last Day). In the first weeks of Advent the stress is on this third coming in majesty. Hence today's gospel which we have already prayed with in recent days. The old liturgical year ended, and the new one has begun, with our calling to mind the Lord's final coming at the end of time. We look forward to it with happy anticipation, not with fear.
How do the three comings of Christ impinge on my life? Do I want to deepen my awareness of them as I move through Advent? How firm is my hope?
Advent is a time of expectation. We joyfully prepare for the great feast of Christ’s birth. However, Advent is also a time of preparation for the second coming of Jesus. The end of the world may not come in my lifetime, but my death will bring the end of my engagement with it. So I need to be ready when Jesus comes for me.
How do we understand the signs of our own times? What is our response?
Apocalyptic visions no longer move me, Lord. But I hear your warning, that I do not let my heart be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life. The mother of dissipation is not joy but joylessness. In you, Lord, I find the basis of my peace, enabling me to stand up and raise my head.
Jesus is using traditional Jewish symbolism to describe what will happen when God's final judgment occurs. He says that people "will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud." The cloud is a symbol for God's presence. Jesus' message bursts with hope and confidence because, unlike those who have reason to fear his coming, Jesus' followers will be able to hold their heads high because their liberation is at hand. Jesus urges me to be on guard so that my heart is not weighed down by the worries of life. What are the worries and cares of life that weigh me down today? As I prepare for a conversation with Jesus, can I bring my worries and cares to him in prayer?

The Christian ethic is not a collection of laws and commands; it is a Person.
God has not given us a series of norms that we must follow. He has given us
his own ethic. The same Spirit who moves and motivates God in his actions
is now also in us and impels us to live in the same way as God. We cannot
complain that God demands things of us that he does not do himself. We
have the exact same ethic as he has, because he has given us the Spirit. Fr Wilfrid Stinissen, OCD

GLOUCESTER CITY MISSION Pat Clapham and Mary Francis helps at City Mission, they are asking for donations of thermal gloves, scarves, hats, socks, coats, jeans, tee shirts, sweatshirts, (- items which wash well and dry quickly) and toiletries for the homeless who find shelter there. The clothes are distributed from the Mission and they can shower and wash clothes there, so spares are always needed.
CAFOD NEWS I would like to share with you some important news about the leadership of CAFOD. As you may have read in our previous e-bulletins this year, our current director Chris Bain is retiring in March, after 15 years of leading CAFOD. If you would like to send a message to Chris Bain on his retirement, you are warmly invited to do so. Please email messages to my colleague Helen Moseley: [email protected]. Messages from volunteers and supporters across England and Wales will be compiled and presented to Chris before he leaves in the spring. With regard to the recruitment of a new Director, Bishop John Arnold, our Chair of Trustees, has made the following announcement this week: “I am delighted to announce that Christine Allen will be the new Director of CAFOD and will be taking up her post in spring 2019. Christine is a strategic leader whose vision, energy, and deep-rooted faith and commitment to Catholic values, make her specially placed to lead CAFOD’s journey in the coming years. Christine has held leadership positions at two faith-based international development organisations, most recently as the Director of Policy and Public Affairs for Christian Aid, and previously, as Progressio’s Executive Director. Her career began as a field worker with the Justice and Peace Commission in the Archdiocese of Liverpool in 1987 and as CAFOD’s campaigns coordinator in 1989. I welcome Christine back to CAFOD with great joy.” Christine sends the following message: “I’m honoured and delighted to be appointed to this role at CAFOD. It feels like coming home. Working for CAFOD as a young campaigner, I discovered catholic social teaching and was hugely inspired and influenced by a church that took action for peace and justice. The need for global solidarity today is as great as ever. CAFOD, and its thousands
16
of supporters, stands as a powerful witness of love in a world of greed and selfishness, as we seek to end the injustices of poverty, inequality and environmental exploitation. I am immensely proud of CAFOD, its work and its role in the global Catholic family and I feel humbled to lead such an important agency of the church.” We are delighted with this appointment and ask if you can keep Chris, Christine and CAFOD’s work in prayer.

CHRISTMAS RAFFLE
Silvana is kindly organising the Christmas Raffle again this year and is appealing to people to offer exciting prizes, no matter how big or how small, simply to encourage people to buy tickets. The raffle this year will be sold in the back room at church so you have time to view what’s on offer over a cup of tea? Please can you help make this a success!
HOSPITALITY - talking about tea and coffee..... Every Sunday after Mass, Silvana is in the kitchen making tea and coffee and despite numerous requests for people to commit their names to a rota perhaps just once a month, we have been unsuccessful in getting her help. Silvana wants to be there for our community and provides tea/coffee, orange juice and also a few volunteers who make cakes and biscuits BUT we need more help. Please put your name on the rota to help in the kitchen every now and again, every little helps! Our Lady of Lourdes needs you.

PROJECTOR
We currently have two young people interested in projecting the words each week with Zack taking a lead role in this. I am grateful for him taking on this role with such commitment and enthusiasm. What we need is a few adults, preferably those not already in roles, taking on this vocation. If you can send an email, type up word then you will be able to learn the system we are using. You will not need to type anything as I do that in the week just click on the next screen and make sure the system is up and running before the service starts and putting things away afterwards. Please speak or email Gail if you are interest. We will put on a training session in the New Year.
WASSAIL! ‘’Wassail’’ is a pleasing word being both a noun and a verb. It is rich with connotations of Christmas, times gone by, celebrations, carol-singing and the wishing of ‘good health’.
The beautiful Carols of comfort and joy which will be sung by the Newent Choral Society, with the Picklenash Childrens' Choir, range from the angel Gabriel visiting Mary (Angelus ad virginem, mentioned in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales) to other very well know Carols.
So, something for everyone and a Christmas Concert not to be missed on Saturday 8th December (7:30pm) at Newent Community School.
A poster is on the notice board.
