St Paul’s Catholic Primary School
Newsletter Thursday 20th June 2019 Term 2 Week 9
Dear St Paul’s Families,
I cannot believe we are approaching the end of Semester 1, with reports being finalised and almost ready for printing.
Over the mid-semester break, we will see quite a few changes to our buildings. Work on the walls on the Administration Building will begin and the external walls of the school buildings will be painted. We are also anticipating to do some work to our Early Learning Centre. On the days that the ELC or OSHC are impacted, parents will be notified to sign in at the ILC (Library Building). Attached to today’s newsletter, you will also find a letter outlining how families (or friends of St Paul’s) are able to make donations to our school building fund. We were recently gifted a very generous sum from an anonymous donor which prompted us to see if there are other families in a position to make donations. We know this will not be the case for all families but any donations are accepted with enormous gratitude.
This weekend we are having a Working Bee and we would really love to have lots of helpers on this day. Please sign up at volunteersignup.org/9LFHA. Items we will need (if you have them): rubber gloves, bucket, gardening gloves, secateurs, chain saw, drills, shovel and wheel barrow. Don’t forget to bring a hat, sunscreen and water bottle too. If you have a trailer and tow-ball, we would also like to do some tip-runs.
Saturday evening at 6:00pm, we have a number of our St Paul’s students receiving the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. It would be lovely to have many St Paul’s families there to support them.
Yesterday was a busy day with our Year T-4 students involved in Super Sessions that focused on our Art Show, whilst our Year 5-6 students attended the St John’s Windows Day. I congratulate all of the children on the respect and responsibility that was demonstrated.
We have some staffing news for Semester 2. Mrs Tessa Browett will be taking 12 months leave and returning to NSW. Whilst we will miss her, we thank her for all of her hard work and are excited for what the next 12 months will bring her. We will have Mr Taquin Zhara who is well-known to the school community replacing her for the rest of the year. Mrs Jackie Mostris (Friday Yr 4/5 JM) will be taking up a full-time teaching position at another school next semester. Mrs Aleesha Rutledge (Friday Yr 5/6 LA) will also begin her Maternity Leave early in Semester 2. We thank them for their work here at St Paul’s and wish them well for the end of the year. Early in Semester 2, Mr Joe C will be taking well-deserved Long Service Leave for the first 5 weeks of term. Mrs Kristy Ziolek will be replacing Joe C during this time.
Please be reminded that children are only supervised from 7:45am until 3:00pm. Recently we have had a lot of children arriving prior to 7:45 and some children waiting on the step for pick up well after 3:00pm. If you unable to pick your child up until after 3:00pm, please contact Reception or our Out of School Hours Care to arrange enrolment.
Next Friday, we will be having an afternoon Mass at 1:40pm on Friday, June 28 to end our school semester. It will be reflective way to finish off before our break and we look forward to Year 5/6C leading this liturgy. All parents are welcome to attend.
Warm regards,
Megan Evans

Last night Ryder, Kaeden, Jasper, Oriel, Johara, Lily, Gabriel and their families participated in the First Holy Communion Retreat. We are looking forward to joining them this Saturday at 6pm for Sacrament of Communion.
During the last week, we entered into ‘Ordinary Time’ on the liturgical calendar. We now stay in this period until we enter Advent at the end of the year. I would like to acknowledge the fabulous work our year 6 religious leadership group have been doing. One of their special duties is to go around to each classroom and change and explain the colour of the prayer cloth to represent the season we are in. They did a wonderful job and had many classes engaged in the changing of the prayer table. Well Done! We have the whole school coming together at 8:30am for the end of semester mass on Friday 28
th June. This is the feast day of St Peter and
St Paul and will be led by 5/6C. Please come and join us for this celebration.
The MJR focus for week 2 is about ‘Listening Skills. We listen with our eyes as well as our ears. Too many of us today have selective hearing, that is, we can switch off. The ‘in’ word in sport today is ‘FOCUS’ and we too have to FOCUS on what people are telling us. A good listening skill to achieve is to ask a question about something your friend has just told you. Eg: Did you enjoy it? How long did it take you to get there? Were you surprised how good it was? That shows you that you are interested in what they told you. You are then practising being an Active Listener.
This week at Friday’s assembly the students from Room 4 with Miss Mona will be presenting prayer and the sacred song Our Earth, written by Miss Mona. Please come and enjoy the assembly.

Thankyou for your support.
Please make sure all borrowed library books
are returned to the school by the end of Week 9.
Road Safety The safety of all our children is
important to us. Please ensure that you and your children are abiding by road safety expectations at school
drop off and pick up times. We have seen some dangerous
behavior by students and parents that is very concerning.
Please ensure that you park appropriately and use the
school crossing.
Room 2 Grade 2 The Term is racing to a conclusion. In Room 2 Grade 2, the Term has been very full on.
We had swimming lessons at the Nightcliff Pool followed by the Carnival at Casuarina.
Later in the Term, we used all the skills Miss Emily taught us at the School Athletics Carnival. We even raced on the main track. Thanks Terri Sparrow for the ribbons.
We commemorated ANZAC Day with a special liturgy and a look inside a real army truck.
We had a visit from a wonderful book illustrator Craig Smith, who showed us not only his talents but also easy ways to draw.
Room 2 Grade 2 led Assembly in Week 5 with the song “One Song”. Both Miss Bindi and Miss Shaniece visited our rooms to talk to us about the Larrakia people and the Rainbow Serpent.
And after we did all these things, we really did work. Procedures and Report writing in English, Number Patterns and Shapes in Maths, Creation and the Church Community in Religious Education, Worms in Science, Oral Presentations, Google Docs, Slides and Sheets in IC&T, Rubbish and Care for the Environment in Inquiry and Creatures in Art.
Busy, busy, busy. I think we all need a holiday soon.
Cheerio, from Room 2 Grade 2.
Dear Families,
The NT Cattlemen’s Association is running its 3
rd annual Cows for Schools program and to advertise our school
to the wider community, I have entered my class T/1M into their competition which will be judged at the Royal Darwin Show in July. This year’s theme is “Eco Cows: Farmers Caring for the Land.” My students have been looking at biodiversity on stations and how cattle interact with the natural world. We have completed our artworks for our wooden cow which will be displayed at the show for your viewing. The winning cow will be selected via a people’s choice voting system. Students, parents, teachers and the wider community will have the opportunity to vote for our cow at the NTCA display during the Darwin show. The winning cow will be announced via the NTCA Facebook page and at the NTCA show display on the final day of the show. The winning class will receive a winner’s ribbon and an Apple iPad 128GB (Wi-Fi). It would be fantastic if everyone could spread the word to come and vote for St Paul’s Catholic Primary School T/1M’s Eco Cow! To entice you to come and vote for our cow, The NTCA will be holding a FREE BBQ at the Darwin Show on Friday the 26th of July 2019, cooking up locally produced sausages and steaks. Come and grab a ‘free’ snag or a steak and make sure to bring all your friends to come and vote for St Paul’s Catholic Primary School T/1M’s Eco Cow…..as many times as you can so we have a chance of win-ning the iPad!!! Thank you! Miss Mona (T/1M Rm4)
Hi my name is Lili, I was lucky enough to be chosen for the under 12 girls soccer regions. I was exited because this years champions ships were in Gove.
On the first day we played 2 games.
On the second day we had 4 games and finished off with going to the cultural art center.
On the third day we had 2 games and we heard some bad news that there will not be a NT team chosen this year which was quite disappointing but all and all it was awesome. It was really awesome being able to meet girls from all different regions. The Darwin region won over all which was really exciting.
V8 Supercars
By Gabi, Yam, Kaveen and Jed
The chief minister invited M.Evan, the school captains and vice captains to visit the V8 supercars on Friday the 14th of June. At 10:30 am we headed off to Hidden Valley Raceway in M.Evan’s car to start our journey! When we arrived at the gates we got a bag with caps and VIP passes. Later on we met the chief minister Michael Gunner, and took a picture with him. After that the lunch was provided, we had burgers and some drinks and then we met the drivers and got their signatures on our caps and posters. M.Evan was having a blast with her pre-colleagues. Then we sat and watched some unofficial races. Jed, Gabi and Yam cheered for the Mc Donald’s spon-sored car and Kaveen cheered for the car that was winning. After that we went back to school at 1:30 pm. We made lots of new friends and had fun together.
Yam: I think this was a great learning experience for the captains and an enjoyable experience for M.Evan!
Gabi: I had a great day at the races. We met famous racers and got their signatures.
Jed: I had an exciting day of watching the cars go round the track really fast and I would love to do it again, it was really fun hanging out with my friends and the food was very delicious.
Friday, 24th May was an exciting day for myself and my family.
It was Graduation Day and the grand finale of 18 months of hard work.
I can now say that I have "formally" graduated from studying my Certificate IV in
Education Support at Charles Darwin University.
I embarked on the journey to complete this study so that I could feel confident
in my role as an Inclusion Support Assistant. I wanted to grow my knowledge
and understanding of working in a school environment and how to support our
Students With Additional Needs - or SWANS. The journey was challenging at
times and reminded me how hard it is to juggle study with family and work.
But...it has reminded me how important it is to continue to grow and
learn and celebrate our successes.
