People of Our Parish

From Our Pastor:From Our Pastor:Thanks be to God for the gift of faith Faith distinguishes us from pagans and from

demons, Saint Augustine has said (354-430 AD), for we believe that Jesus Christ is God the Son, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, One God, Who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit We believe that Jesus came into the world, was crucified, died and is risen from the dead, that He has conquered sin and death and wrought for us Life Eternal in Heaven And we, by His grace, love Jesus Christ and follow Him We believe in His life-affirming and life-giving teachings, the wondrous dignity that He has given to men, women and children made in His image And in our love for God and neighbor, in our following God, we proclaim this and strive to live this in our words and deeds

The demons whom we hear about in the Gospel this Sunday also saw and believed in the things that Jesus was doing Indeed, before Jesus had risen, the demons cried out and said, “I know who you are – the Holy One of God!” (Mark 1:21-28) But, they did not love or follow Jesus Saint Augustine said: We distinguish ourselves from the pagans by believing that Jesus Christ has risen; let us also distinguish ourselves from the demons The demons said: I know who you are – the Holy One of God And Jesus tells them, “Quiet! Come out of him!” (Mark 1:25) Saint Augustine asks: Didn’t the demons say what Saint Peter also said? Jesus was inquiring of the Apostles and said, “You, though, who do you say that I am?” Saint Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” And while the demons are told, “Be quiet,” we hear Jesus tell Peter, “Blessed are you” (Matthew 16:13-17) What made the difference for them, also makes the difference for us What made the demons cry out? Fear What made Saint Peter cry out? Love Saint Peter declares the Faith with love And in that faith and love, Peter follows Jesus (while the demons refused to love or follow Jesus and they worked against Him)

May all faithful Christians, Catholic and Protestant, follow Jesus Christ and be on fire with the ardor of charity, of love, as Saint Augustine says, and thus differentiate ourselves from Satan and his demons In our love for God and neighbor, let us also pray for the conversion of those who are pagans, that they come to believe in, follow and love Jesus Christ Let us also pray for all those who profess to be Christians, yet by their actions we see that they perpetrate moral evils, through legislation and executive orders, as they deny the God-given right to life of pre-born children, force people to pay for the killing of children, and deny the God-given beauty, wonder, distinction and rights of women, men and children made in His image In the face of such moral evils, we proclaim the Truth with love This ardor of love lifts us up to Heaven, for God is Love (1 John 4) Whatever vexations we might suffer on earth, however much the enemy may humiliate Christian hearts and press them downward, the ardor of love seeks the heights During this Catholic Schools Week and every day, may we realize that our Lord is always ready to give us His grace, His divine strength, through prayer, His Church, Word and Sacraments; let us choose to receive His grace with open, expansive hearts Let us embrace His grace with the fullness of the Faith, with love, following Jesus Christ in love (by our words and deeds), telling the Truth with love, and saying yes to God Who is Love and to His gift of life, now and always

With peace and prayers in Christ,Fr. William Vernon

A DAY OF GIVING FOR CATHOLIC SCHOOLSSaint Clement School is proudly participating in the fourth

annual “Many Gifts, One Nation: A Day of Giving” online campaign, which will begin Tuesday, February 2nd, 2021 at Noon and continue through Noon on Wednesday, February 3rd Countless people in our country have been blessed by the many gifts of Catholic schools like ours Unfortunately, it has also become easy for graduates to lose touch with our school and parish community Now, as it has become increasingly difficult to hold many of our traditional and essential fundraisers due to the pandemic, we are reaching out to everyone who has been impacted by our wonderful school to reconnect with the Saint Clement community that has given them so much Please help spread the word to family and friends as we hope to see what everyone can do to give back and support the children of Saint Clement for years to come Thank you and God bless you all

DIOCESE OF MADISON ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL 2021

“The Kingdom of God is at Hand”The theme for the 2021 Annual Catholic Appeal of the Diocese

of Madison is “The Kingdom of God is at Hand” We ask that God guide us, and give us the ability to put our faith in Him to allow us the capacity to love and care for those in our parishes, our diocese and the Church throughout the world We ask that His grace make us even more generous in supporting those needs

Each pledge to the Annual Catholic Appeal supports diocesan ministries, education and services and assures a strong future for the Diocese of Madison and the people that it serves

This year each of us is asked to consider making a pledge, payable over six months Your gift will help enable the diocese to reach its goal and provide to the ministries supported by the appeal

If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back

Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response May God bless you

A BELATED THANK YOU!We wish to thank everyone who was involved in any way with

decorating our church for the Christmas Season this year With such a large church, a lot of work and time goes into setting up and taking down the Christmas decorations, as well as the continued watering to maintain the poinsettias that grace the sanctuary now We’re grateful to the many people who gave of their time and talent this year: Tom Zenz, Dennis Busch, Dan Pink, Brandon Klaas, Jeff Reuter, Bernie Grimme, Carl, Matt and Gene Ihm, Kevin Koester, Tom Block, Larry Addison, Maynard and Judy Behncke, Judy and Megan Mumm, Judy Vesperman, Mary Fishnick, and Andrea McMahon We hear so many compliments how beautiful our church looks each year Without your help, this would not be possible Again, thank you everyone!

GO MAKE DISCIPLES!& PREPARING FOR LENT

“The[re is a] popular quote from French novelist Leon Bloy: ‘The only real sadness, the only real failure, the only great tragedy in life, is not to become a saint’ There are many facets to the life of a saint, all encompassed by a deep and abiding love for Jesus: a life of prayer, participation in the Church, love for neighbor, abandonment to the will of God, desire for Heaven, growth in virtue this list could become quite lengthy How can we make this idea of striving to be a saint (and thereby bringing others to the faith through our witness) more concrete? Lindsay Finn ~ Go Make Disciples January 2021 Newsletter

For Your Reflection: As we approach Ash Wednesday and the Season of Lent, begin to think about how you will pray and practice fasting and almsgiving These three disciplines of the spiritual life are foundational to the life of a person striving to live a life of virtue, of following Jesus, of becoming a saint

PRIESTS FOR OUR FUTURE: THE CHURCH IS ALIVE! CAMPAIGN UPDATEThanks to your continued generosity and diligence, our parish

received a final rebate from the over-goal portion of our St Clement Parish campaign quarter ending December 31, 2020, in the amount of $1,71500 The total rebate our St Clement Parish has received is $34,03611 The official end to the campaign was December 31, 2020 Any future monies will go directly into the endowment fund Thank you for your continued prayers for and generosity and support of priestly vocations
