Causes of Species Extinction

(Science Report)

Page 3: Causes of extinction

Biodiversity is diminished or destroyed in a number of ways either by natural cause orby human disruption. When the balance ofnature is disturbed, environment isbeing devastated and species became EXTINCT.Natural Cause : Human Disruption:

*Evolution*Asteroid Impact*Volcanic Eruption*Plate Tectonics*Others

*Holocene Extinction *Pleistocene Extinction*Others

Natural Cause-Destructive change to environment or landscape such as Natural phenomena that cause Extinction.

Extinction- is the end of a group of organism, normally a species.

Species- one of the basic units of biological classification and a taxonomic rank.

*Evolution*Asteroid Impact*Volcanic Eruption*Plate Tectonics

Habitat-place wherespecies liveor grow.

Evolution

Evolution process became more faster and quick in birds and some marine mammals for whichIs they have their migrating seasons.

-Change in heritable traits of biological populations over successive generations.Evolutionary processes give rise to diversity at every level of biological organization , including the levels of Species, individual organisms, and molecules.

Example: Snakes are believed to have legs like lizards millions of years ago and as time goes by it disappear tosurvive in it’s environment.

Asteroid Impact

The first and most favored theory of “Mass Extinction”that an asteroid hit somewhere in the golf of Mexico in the Yucatan Peninsula 65 million years ago. The Asteroid impact is site is called the Chixclub.Caused forest fire, ignites volcanic eruption all over the globe as well as tidal waves, and severe storms that eliminates the sunlight are believed as the reason of Dinosaurs Extinction due to food source depletion.

Volcanic Eruptions

When volcanoes erupt they send clouds of dust, lava or magma, sulfuric acid, and poisonous gas that would have made it impossible to breath. As a result in blocking the sunlight and a severe climate change so many living things that live on Cretaceous Period including some species of plants and Dinosaursdisappeared.

Plate Tectonics-It is a theory that the Earth’s crust, including the continents and the ocean floor is made up of a series of plates. As the plates collide volcanoes occur and may result as in oceanic islands, mountain ranges etc.

Human DisruptionWhen mankind interrupt the cycle of nature and cause trouble such as Deforestation, overhunting, etc.

*Holocene Extinction*Pleistocene Extinction*Others

Page 11: Causes of extinction

Holocene Extinction-This is named after what geologists call the period as humans have been in.

-It is thought to be started once the Homo-Sapiens started dispersing outward from Africa on the land bridges, hunting and gathering was the start of the Extinction induced by man.

Page 12: Causes of extinction

Pleistocene MegafaunaPleistocene Megafaunais set of species of large animals that lived on Earth during Pleistoceneepoch and became extinct in a Quaternary extinction event. These species appear to have died off as Humans expanded out of Africa andSouthern Asia.
