Labor Radicalism and WWI• It was a way for American
capital to solve the economic crisis by expanding into foreign markets
• The war would send Americans to die as well as hurt our freedoms here at home.
• The European war was an international crime and a horror for which there is no parallel in savagery
• Rural farmers from Washington State’s Grange movement also joined with industrial labor to advocate American neutrality.
• Under wartime regulations, unions had agreed not to strike so as not to interfere with the war effort. Which companies took advantage of.
• They conducted street polls, and reported that 90% of the Seattle public was opposed to the war. (Estimated to be lower)
President Woodrow Wilson's Fourteen Points
• Absolute freedom of navigation upon the seas, outside territorial waters, alike in peace and in war.
• Peaceful and neutral territories should be returned to their own control.
• Creation of countries to curb further conflict (a polish state).• Wish the right to prevail and desire a just and stable peace
such as can be secured only by removing the chief provocations to war.
• to create a place of equality among the peoples of the world, -- the new world in which we now live, -- instead of a place of mastery.
Canton Ohio Anti-War Speech• the Wall Street Junkers … have
wrung their countless millions from your sweat, your agony and your life’s blood, in a time of war…
• treaties, showing that the purpose of the Allies is exactly the purpose of the Central Powers, and that is the conquest and spoliation of the weaker nations that has always been the purpose of war.
• …the economic predecessors of the capitalists of our day, declared all wars. And their miserable serfs (poor) fought all the battles.
• But in all the history of the world you, the people, have never had a voice in declaring war, and strange as it certainly appears, no war by any nation in any age has ever been declared by the people.
• War makes possible all such crimes and outrages. And war comes in spite of the people. When Wall Street says war the press says war and the pulpit promptly follows with its Amen.
War Is “a Blessing, Not a Curse”: The Case for Why We Must Fight
• they saw the war as a struggle between democracy and barbarism (extreme cruelty or brutality and the absence of civilization)
• Are we to permit others to finish the glorious work which we began…Must even China be allowed to forge ahead of America in defense of democracy?
• we are driven finally to the point where we must fight or forfeit the decent opinion of all mankind;
• we need a test—a test of body, of mind and of spirit—a trying-out by fire… because simply and finally, in such a case, war is curative, not destructive, a blessing not a curse.
• surely shortening and perhaps quickly ending the war would save millions of precious finer perceptions as a being altogether worthy of our worshipful lives
• to prove ourselves not merely worthy of the happiness which flows from prosperity but eager and fearless in support of free life and full liberty the world over,
