Before you begin

Using 2 in 1 externalphone / microphone• When 2 in 1 phone /microphone

connected, sound output fromspeaker will be muted and norecording can be made from built-inmicrophone.

Keys lockThis feature avoids accidental keyactivation during recording orplayback.

1. Press and hold MENU button for 2seconds, LOCKED will be shown ondisplay. (LOCK icon will lit)2. Press and hold MENU button for 2seconds again to unlock keys.

Setting the time

Year/Date/12/24/TimeSetting

With this function, you can alwaysread on the display the recording dateand time of your recorded messages.Follow the steps below for timesetting.

You can still use this unit for normalrecording without setting the time.However, no correct recording dateand time can be referred for yourrecorded messages and the display willkeep flashing when the unit is turnedoff.

1. Turn on the unit.2. Press MENU repeatedly to enter

Time setting mode.3. When “YEAR”

flashes, the digitsof the year blinks(default is 2003).Press REVERSE orFORWARD toincrease/decreasethe number, pressMENU toconfirm.

4. Once the year isentered , thedigits in themonth field willblink (default is01). Press REVERSE or FORWARDto increase/decrease

the number, press MENU toconfirm.

5. Once the month is entered, thedigits in the day will blink(while thedigits in the month field stopblinking). Press REVERSE orFORWARD to increase/decrease thenumber, press MENU to confirm.

6. Once the date isentered, you canchoose between 12/24 hour clockdisplay by pressingREVERSE /FORWARD, thenpress MENU to confirm.

7. Once the time isentered, the digitsin the hour fieldwill blink (defaultsetting is 12 (12hour mode) & 0 (24hour mode). PressREVERSE orFORWARD to increase/decrease thenumber, press MENU to confirm.

Internal/External memory setting

ENYou can store the recorded messages ineither the built-in (INT) or external(EXT) memory. To select, follow theprocedures as follow:

INT

1. Turn on the unit.2. Press MENU repeatedly to entermemory location setting mode.3. Default setting is INT,press REVERSE orFORWARD to selectbetween built-in andexternal memory.

4. If external memory is selected., the icon will show on display.

5. If the unit detects no externalmemory card inserted after selectingthe external memory, the EXT iconwill keep flashing. Switch back to theinternal memory or insert externalmemory card.

Folder selectionYou can select a specific folder (1-9)for recording. Default is folder 1.(Refer to page 12 for details)

Recording quality(SP/HQ)You can select between two recordingqualities. Default is SP.(Refer to Recording quality / conditionsection (p.11) for details.)

Recording condition(DICT/CONF)You can select between two recordingconditions. Default is DICT.(Refer to Recording quality / conditionsection (p.11) for details.)

Playback modeYou can select to play one file at atime (Play one) or play all files in thefolder continuously (Play all). Defaultis Play one.

IntroscanYou can quick scanning thebeginning 3 seconds of each file in afolder. (refer to page 12 for details)

Manual recording

2. AVR (AutomaticVoice Recording)This feature allows the unit to sensesound and to record only when youare speaking into the microphone.When dictation stops for about 3seconds, recording will stop and thenstart again automatically when youresume dictation.

1. Select destination folder (1-9).2. Press MENUfour times.3. Press REVERSEor FORWARD totoggle betweenAVR on and AVRoff.4. Press STOP toexit to STOP mode.5. Press RECORD to enter AVR mode.

6. During AVR onrecording, adjust thesensitivity of themicrophone bypressing VOL UP andVOL DOWN, SEN withsensitivity value showson display (e.g. increase sensitivityvalue when recording source is farfrom the unit or the recordingenvionment is quiet.).7. Start dictation. Recording startsautomatically.8. Press STOP to end AVR recording.9. Repeat step 2 and select AVR OFFfor de-selection.

Tips:

• The first syllable or two may belost when you start recordingbecause this ‘sound’ is used to turnon the AVR feature. It is a goodpratice to make some ‘sounds’ or saya short word to activate the AVRbefore you begin actual dictation.

Tips:• For conferences, to obtain optimum

recording quality, place the recorder withthe microphone freely exposed to thesound source as close as convenient. Abuilt-in automatic recording level controlwill set record level for optimumrecordings during manual recording. Avoidrecording near unwanted noise sources,such as air conditioners or fans.

Searching folderYou can select a specific folder (1-9)for recording. Default is folder 1.

Erasing file / folderErasing selected fileYou can delete a file by the followingsteps:

1. Select folder (1-9)2. Select file.3. Press ERASE once and DELETE willblink on the screen.4. Press and hold ERASE to confirmdeleting. (or press STOP to cancelerasing file)

Advanced operation

Insert

You can insert new segments into a filewithout erasing previously recordedcontent.

1. Select folder.2. Select file for inserting newsegment.3. Start playback.4. Press RECORD tostart recording newsegment, “INS” andelapsed recorded timewill be shown ondisplay.5. Press STOP to stop recording.

Append

You can add appendix (e.g.reminder, supplementaryinformation) to the end of the file.

CutYou can erase unwanted parts fromyour recording.

1. Select folder.2. Select file.3. Start playback of the file with theunwanted part.4. Press ERASE tomark the start of theunwanted part, “CUT-S” shows on display.5. Press ERASE tomark the endof theunwanted part, “CUT-E” shows on display.6. Press ERASE aginto confirm cutting (orpress STOP to cancel)

Tips: Cutting, inserting new segmentsand adding appendix will only updatethe recorded time length, withoutchanging recording time and date.

1. Select folder.2. Select file for adding appendix.3. Start playback.4. Press PLAY tostart playback.5. During playback,press MENU once,“APPEND” will beshown on display.6. Press RECORD within 3 seconds tostart recoring appendix.7. Press STOP to stop recording.

CAUTION

• The edit function does not operatewhen battery power is too low.• After editing a message, “WAIT” willbe displayed. Do not power off thedevice until “WAIT” disappears.

Format (Caution! All datainside the memory will beerased)

You can format both the internal orexternal memory when needed. (e.g.compatability problem, etc.)The procedures are as follow:

1. Turn on the unit.2. Press MENU repeatedly to selecteither internal or external memory.(refer to Setting internal / externalmemory section formore details.)3. Press ERASE,“DELETE” will flash onthe display.4. Press and hold RECfor 3 seconds,“FORMAT” will flashon the display.5. Press and holdERASE, “WAIT” willshow on the display,formatting is inprocess.6. After theformatting is completed, the remaintime of the selected memory will showon the display.

RCA Digital Voice ManagerInstallation of RCADigital Voice ManagerRCA Digital Voice Manager should beinstalled before connecting the unit toPC.

The installation procedures are asfollow:

1. Turn on your computer and insertthe RCA Digital Voice Manager CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive,installation screen will appear on thescreen.2, If the SETUP screen does notappear, double click My Computer,then your CD-ROM drive icon, and theINSTALL icon to begin installation.3. Select the DVR model in the Startupscreen, then click Install to startinstallation.4. Click the software components youwant to install.5. Click Install USB driver & SystemApplications to install the requireddriver. (For Windows 98SE / Me useronly)6. Follow the On-screen instructions toinstall all the neccessary files.7. Click Finish to complete installationand return to the startup screen.8. Click Install RCA Digital VoiceManager to run the setup program, itmay take a few minutes for theinstaller to start.9. Restart your computer.

Troubleshooting tipsUnit doesn’t turn on• Check that batteries are properlyinserted and not exhausted.• Make sure battery compartment dooris properly closed.• Make sure LOCK function is notactivated.

Display keeps flashing when unit isoff• You may not have set the time. Referto section on Time Setting.

Cannot record• Make sure LOCK function is notactivated.• Make sure memory is not full.• You have recorded 99 files in onefolder. Try record in a new folder.• If you select external memory, pleaseensure that an external memory card isproperly inserted.

Cannot show recording date andtime during playback• You may have not set the date andtime before recording. Refer to section‘Time Setting’.

No sound from speaker duringplayback• Make sure volume is not set to 0.• Headphones should not beconnected.

Cannot edit• Make sure LOCK function is notactivated.

Cannot activate the unit afterpressing on keys• There may be software problems.Press and hold RESET to reset the unit.
