ALearn from interior designer Dalia Canora how she created just such a calming environment for clients Susan and Rob.

CULTIVATE CALMKnowing Susan wanted a peaceful master bed-

room, Dalia worked within a neutral palette. Since the room is fairly large with high ceilings, she chose a darker gray for the wall color than would have worked in a smaller room. While the finished product looks soothingly simple, Dalia curated the space with many thoughtful choices: keeping patterns to a minimum and letting the striped drapery infuse the space with an elegantly simple, modern feel.

Susan specified this was a no-TV zone, and in keeping with Susan’s desire for a serene space rather than a stimulating one, Dalia made sure the walls remained mainly open. A small painting in the sitting area, a decorative mirror over the dresser and a black and white wedding photo of Susan and Rob help the space reflect their personalities and are the only adornment on the walls.

t the end of a long day, when the nights are dark and tinged with a crisp chill, what could be more inviting than a cozy, calming bedroom?

THE ART OF SUBTLETY. Susan already had the headboard, which served as the starting point and inspiration piece for the room. Dalia matched up the headboard color with the bed skirt fabric and selected the bench with custom colored legs to suit the room. The nightstands with their sleek linear design contrast with the round lamps and wooden chandelier from Arteriors.

|LEFT| MAKE IT PERSONAL. A black and white photo from their wedding fits in perfectly with the room’s neutral palette. The square poufs and lamps also add subtle textural and visual interest.

|LEFT BELOW| CURVEBALL. While many predominant elements of the room are linear, Dalia introduces curvilinear elements like the chandelier, the mirror and the rounded edges of the dresser. The dresser’s finish brings a marbled texture, its cool, placid feel contrasting with the soft and warm, cozy textures.

The space is a peaceful room that considers the specific functional needs of Susan, Rob and their three kids. It was carefully designed to work with them and their needs. “Function is always really key,” Dalia says. The kids love to come in and hang out, and the sitting area offers a space for them to do that; it is clut-ter-free, so they can run through unobstructed.

INTRODUCE VARIETYWith a neutral palette, texture becomes

important to keeping the look interesting and inviting. Since Dalia chose a horizontal striped pattern for the drapery, she opted for a solid color wool rug that has a warm, nubby texture to it. For the bed, “layering of fabric makes it feel more inviting,” Dalia says. In addition to wool and chunky knits, fur is another classic choice for adding texture, as in the footstool covered in alpaca fur in the sitting area. The warm wooden texture of the chandelier also contrasts with the cool marble-like finish of the rounded dresser.

Dalia offers this expert tip for creating a space that’s both peaceful and interesting: “Try to vary shapes as well as textures.” She elaborates, “I like to use curvilinear and then geometric. It just makes things interesting.” Dalia takes this approach with the circular table lamps, pendant light, and dresser with rounded edges in juxtaposition with the striped drapery and linear shape of the head-board to create subtle variety.

“TRY TO VARY SHAPES AS WELL AS TEXTURES.” DALIA ELABORATES, “I LIKE TO

USE CURVILINEAR AND THEN GEOMETRIC. IT JUST MAKES THINGS

INTERESTING.”

SITTING PRETTY. The sitting area carves out room for simple, unplugged pleasures like reading or hanging out with the kids. The footstool covered in alpaca fur and the circular mirrored side table add a touch of glamour, while the white stripe along the bottom of the chair skirts echoes the hori-zontal stripes of the drapery fabric.
