Sport! Colonel By was eager to enter a Jr Boys team in this year's all-new rugby seven's competition - 24 players suited up to compete in two after school mini-meets, as well as two all-day tournaments at Twin Elm Rugby Park. The seven's game is gaining worldwide notoriety, with its recent inclusion in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. The short season allowed for some great skill development, which will be very useful as the boys transition to the 15-a-side season next spring, for which training will be begin after the March Break. CB Students win SHAD Entrepreneurship Cup

Eleven students from Colonel By Secondary School were given the amazing opportunity to attend the Shad Valley summer program. Successful applicants were both high achieving and well-rounded individuals, as the program entails that students from across Canada attend a university outside of their city.

Colonel By was fortunate enough to have a student at every Shad Valley campus across Canada. During this program, the students were placed in groups and given a broad topic of “Living Large with a Small Footprint.” With this statement they had to create a product that would tackle this theme. They were given a month to work with 10 bright minds across the country to create a business. Approximately 50 students were at each campus and were challenged to come up with 5 different businesses per campus. Each campus had an inner competition to determine the best business that would go on to represent the entire university campus at Shad Cup, a national business competition.

Dalhousie University and University of New Brunswick tied for first in the overall competition, University of Calgary came second and Lakehead came third. Pranav Sharma, a student at Colonel By, was the CEO of the overall winning company and 1st in best use of scientific principle representing Dalhousie University. Meggie Wu, a member of the University of New Brunswick team, was able to work with her campus to tie with Pranav’s team. Colonel By students Praveen Raj and Amy Chen helped their teams place 2nd and 3rd overall respectively. Colonel By students, representing all top places displayed at the national business contest, displayed creativity, scientific principles and the ability to tackle a big problem facing the world.

SHAD Valley winner selected for Artic Youth Council

Near the end of October, CB student Pranav Sharma represented Canada on issues facing the north as part of the Arctic Youth Council. Global Vision, selected 30 youth from southern Canada to interact with 30 youth from the North to learn about various issues they are facing in their communities. Pranav Sharma was there to learn about mental health and education, and to bring back his findings to work with the Ottawa Carleton District School Board to try and improve conditions in the north. He also has the unique to present his findings in a communiqué to Stephen Harper later this year.

Aditya Mohan Wins National Manning Innovation Award

Text by: Rosemarie Enslin, Marketwired

Two health-related projects from two Ottawa students captured major

Young Canadian Innovator prize money from the Ernest C. Manning Awards

Foundation at the 53rd annual Canada Wide Science Fair held this week at

the University of Windsor.

A ground breaking project also earned Aditya Mohan, 17-year old student at

Colonel By Secondary School, a $4,500 Manning Young Canadian Innovator Award for developing an advanced

and viable treatment for HIV. Aditya Mohan also won a senior Excellence Silver medal.

"Canada's economic and social future depends on the proper investment and mentorship of young innovators

who are emerging visionaries and change agents. The encouragement of organizations like Youth Science Canada

and the Ernest C. Manning Innovation Awards Foundation is a fundamental commitment to the realization of the

economic and social opportunities that innovative minds create for Canada, and indeed globally, starting with our

youngest innovators. We are pleased to be recognizing and fostering that mindset among Canadian youth," said

Jennifer Diakiw, president, Ernest C. Manning Innovation Awards Foundation.

"Canada's bright minds need the encouragement of organizations like Youth Science Canada and the Ernest C.

Manning Innovation Awards Foundation if they are to help society realize the economic and social opportunities

that innovative minds create for Canada, and indeed globally," she said.

Mohan's project was entitled "Development of a Novel Thymic Stromal Lymphopoietin Based Treatment for

HIV." He explained that current treatments for HIV-AIDS are based on the Interleukin-7 (IL-7) cytokine and

Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART). The IL-7 cytokine primes the white blood cells in the body for

attack from infected cells. One main problem with the IL-7 cytokine is the decreased responsiveness of white

blood cells to its presence over time. Mohan's novel idea uses Thymic Stromal Lymphopoietin (TSLPR), a

cytokine that stimulates the immune system in a similar way, but without the gradual reduction in responsiveness

seen with traditional IL-7 treatment. Aditya has now started to further his research and has begun ground

breaking research in the field of immunology. He is currently collaborating with numerous professors at the

University of Ottawa and has independently obtained funding and sponsorship from large corporate

organizations.

Learning “outside of the box” — Cooperative Education at CB! The Shine Group, Robert Hopkins PS, Richcraft Sensplex, MHF Financial, Canadian Tire, Future Shop, Shopper’s Drugmart, Divino Restaurant, and the NRC are only nine of twenty six placements where students in the Cooperative Education program are spending their afternoons this fall.

Cooperative Education is a planned learning experience, for which credits are earned, that integrates classroom theory and learning experiences at a workplace to enable students to apply and refine the knowledge and skills acquired in a related curriculum course. The majority of students taking co-op at Colonel By are taking 2-credits. At Colonel By students taking two credits will attend their placements every other day (on days 1-3 or on days 2-4) for the duration of the school year. Students can also be scheduled for up to four credits. Students taking four credits attend their placements every afternoon.

Students are placed in a wide variety of job opportunities. Working in pharmacies, elementary schools, flower shops, and collision repair are just a few of the positions Colonel By students are experiencing this year. Placements are ultimately determined by your co-op teacher, but consideration is always given to the desires of the student.

A further benefit to taking co-operative education is a chance to experience work in trades and trades related fields. With Colonel By’s very strong academic focus, there are few opportunities for students that would like to build hands-on skills in apprentice-based trades.

The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) offers secondary school students the opportunity to train as apprentices while enrolled in school. It allows students to complete their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) and to gain apprenticeship training leading to a Certificate of Qualification with journeyperson status in a skilled trade. An apprenticeship is a hands-on program for people who want to work in a skilled trade and who enjoy learning by doing. For more information on OYAP, please go to www.oyap.com.

If you would like more information about Co-operative Education at Colonel By you can access our co-op wiki page at http://colonelbycoop.wikispaces.com or you can contact Ms. Willison in the Guidance office.

How does co-op benefit students?

1. You learn about your strengths, interests, and special skills

2. It provides career exploration and planning

The guidance area has been abuzz this Fall with plenty of

back to school activity. Counsellors visited all grade 9

classes to see how our new learners were settling into life

@ CB.

Each grade 9, 10 and 11 class was also visited to encourage

students to best understand their personal academic goals

and to ensure they were on track to achieve their goals.

All grade 12 classes have had presentations on post

secondary options and our accompanying parent post

secondary information night was held on October 15th and

21st. Parents are invited to look to the website for a copy

of this presentation.

Graduating students wishing to pursue College programs

are signing up now at www.ontariocolleges.ca; no access

PIN numbers are required. The University application PIN

numbers have arrived to the school and have been handed

out to students. As reported on Cougarvision, students away when the PIN’s were handed out have been advised

to see Guidance to pick up their PIN. Using their PIN number, students can then verify their information on

OUAC, which is the platform to apply to Ontario universities of their choice at www.ouac.on.ca/101/

Excitement continues to build at all grade levels with the first report card being issued and thoughts on course

options and planning beginning to take shape for next year.

Students wishing to book an appointment with their counsellor may do so by coming into student services and

filling out a gold appointment slip.

Careers is a .5 credit course offered to all grade 10’s to allow them to start exploring and planning for their future. This course is truly about the student. After working through a number of exercises to discover their likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses the students are now working on their educational plan. This allows students to identify the correct courses to take to finish up their high school diploma and be on the right path for their choice of post-secondary plans.

During the final component of the course, the students will be researching universities/colleges and apprenticeships as part of their summative mark. This course finishes up in the third week of January when the students will move on to their Civics education course. Students who are working on Civics in this first part of the year will transition to Careers at the same time.

November, 2014 Colonel By S.S. Newsletter Update

Student Council has had an extremely busy and exciting start to the year. In late September we ran our incredibly popular Grade 9 Leadership Camp at Camp Smitty in Eganville. Mother nature cooperated providing absolutely beautiful weather to compliment the amazing

team building, leadership activities, workshops, and games.

Over 150 students had a fantastic time and our class of 2018 are off to a wonderfully positive start to their CB careers.

Congratulations to the candidates who ran for Grade Representatives in October. We had a tremendous turnout with over 50 candidates running. October also saw our annual Halloween dance and CougarVision's Classroom Costume Contest (won by Ms. Johnson's class).

Our annual snowsuit drive in support of the Ottawa Snowsuit Fund is right around the corner. Council members will be canvassing and accepting gently used mitts, gloves, jackets, and snowsuits in the first week of December.

The Colonel By community has shown their care for the community, be that local or international, through a variety of fundraising activities.

The Open Eyes 10th Annual Pancake Breakfast is one of our major fundraisers to support the Basotho Girls Leadership Corps raising $1,600 each year. For the past 6 years Open Eyes has partnered with Help Lesotho, a local NGO that works to help mitigate the ravages of HIV/AIDS in the country of Lesotho, in southern Africa. Open Eyes has been twinned with the Basotho Girls Leadership Corps, a new initiative that works with young girls to help to build leadership skills and community ties. The twinning program serves to develop relationships between Colonel By students and Basotho youth as well as create opportunities for our students to learn about Lesotho and the issues facing the young people of this nation. Thanks go to staff advisors Mr. Baird and Ms. Rushton for their guidance, modeling and leadership.

This year also saw the re-emergence of Ebola in east Africa. Colonel By students understood an accepted their responsibility to act. Three student-led groups accepted this task and raised over $1400 towards the fight to combat Ebola. Thanks go to Mr. Skuce for modeling social responsibility.

CB students reach out within our direct community too! The Annual Food Drive held October 5th to 8th, raised the equivalent to $10,000 worth of food and cash to the Gloucester Emergency Food Cupboard. Thank you all of the teachers, students and parent volunteers who made this initiative possible. Colonel By is not finished yet!

Students began their campaign for Operation Come Home creating an Angel Tree where they will gather toiletries for the operation. Further to this the annual Snowsuit Fund drive will begin December 1st. Finally will be the Food Hamper Drive (Dec. 8-12) benefiting programs with the Sheppard’s of Good Hope.
