On the CoverCBA is built on its legacy and is focusing on its future. On April 26, seventh graders Adonis Dixon, Emma Costello and Collyn Edwards (front l-r), along with approximately 40 alumni filmed a promotional video for the CBA Annual Fund. The video was designed to move and inspire alumni of all generations to continue to support CBA and the history of excellence upon which the school is built.

The synopsis of the video is the following: Three young seventh graders are walking the halls and beginning their journey. Their struggle and anxiousness create a sense of insecurity as they face their future. Just a few steps behind them, an unending crowd of alumni walks the same path in remembrance of their own time at CBA, but more importantly to boldly support those young CBA students as they turn the corner and face their future.

The video was produced by Al Cutrie ’02 and the creative staff of Otto Media.

Brother Joseph Jozwiak, FSC

Dear Alumni and Friends of CBA,

Welcome to the Summer 2014 edition of Brothers Magazine! The theme of this edition is “Be Bold... Building on our Legacy... Focusing On Our Future.” The word “bold” is defined as “willing and eager to face adventure with a sense of confidence and fearlessness.” One of our four generation legacy families, the Boyles, is highlighted in this issue of the newsletter. This family’s story, over a century in duration, will give evidence of their commitment to Christian Brothers Academy and help bring clarity to the word “bold.” CBA is blessed to have many legacy families as part of our school community. In future issues, we will continue to highlight these families, to give voice to the ongoing adventurous spirit of multi-generational CBA families, whose sense of confidence and fearlessness have emboldened not only our legacy, but our Central New York community as well.

In addition to highlighting CBA’s legacy families, other items in this newsletter focus on our school’s vibrancy and how we prepare our students for the future. Some of these items include the tremendous accomplishments and achievements of our 2014 graduates, highlights from our spring Lasallian Auction/Dinner and a snapshot of our newest recipients of the Alumni Association’s auspicious Purple and Gold Award.

This edition of the alumni newsletter will also provide you with a glimpse of the many ways in which our students have shown themselves to be “bold” in their involvement in their academic pursuits, campus ministry activities, athletic accomplishments, theatrical and musical performances and visual works of art.

The featured articles on our legacy families and the highlights of the past school year are complimented by alumni news, especially the Alumni Jubilee Reunion for the Class of 1964 and their “bold” statement of continued support of the school and their commitment to Lasallian education by way of their contributions to the largest scholarship class gift ever received at Christian Brothers Academy.

I hope that you will enjoy reading this edition of CBA’s alumni newsletter and that you will join us— with your time, talent and treasure— as we “boldly” face our future.

Sincerely,

Brother Joseph Jozwiak, FSC Principal 315-446-5960 x1229 [email protected]

The CBA community celebrated Founder’s Day with a mass, a special send-off to the senior class and a picnic under beautiful sunny skies at Alibrandi Stadium on May 15 .

At the conclusion of the mass, senior Abigail Capella, who will be attending the University of Pittsburgh in the fall, read the following poem entitled, “Hallways.”

We started outRunning through the hallways,With backpacks twice our size

Like tortoise shellsStrapped onto our small,

Preteen torsos. And we ran with zeal

To our lockers. We dialed in our combination

Thousands of timesBefore we finally got it right

and theMetallic screech of it opening

For the first timeQuickened our hearts.

We dated recklessly.Three weeks was an

accomplishment, A whole month was unheard of.

We wore high pantsAnd weird hairstyles

And tacky neon accessories.We awkwardly

Strutted through the hallwaysAnd we swore we were

The coolest kids The junior high had ever seen.

We were quickly shovedBack down and

We squatted at our bottom lockersOn the top floor and

Felt like everything was differentBecause now,

Now we were in high school. And we were not cool anymore.

So we wore normal pantsAnd normal hair

And normal colors andWe shuffled through the hallways.

We began to find and loseOurselves.

We weren’t thinking about the future;

It was too far away.We were being normal

In the hallways. We were going out and

Having fun and doing whatAll the older kids did.Because we wanted to

Grow up Way too soon.

We were stressed out Of our minds. We criedOver broken hearts and

Lost dreams. We were scared of the future

And we were trying to Prepare for the end.

We fast walked through the hallways

Clutching books to our chestsAnd staring at

The speckled floor and

We stood on the edge of Letting go.

But we didn’t.

We watched those before usPack the hallway with

Sweat and tears and just thoughtAbout how much we couldn’t wait

Until it was our turn. And then we came back

On top.For real this time.

And we cheered and criedAnd stood

In the freezing rain.We danced in the hallways and

We thought about the futureBut tried to stay in the moment.

Tried to decide who ourReal friends were,

Who we were going to be,Where we were going to go.

Because this timeWe were reallyGrowing up –

Way sooner than we Ever could have imagined.

And now,Now we cry in the hallways.

Because we haveRegrets.

We have memories. We still don’t know about

The futureWe have hit rock bottom

And we have laughed so hard thatWe forgot about everything bad.

We have lost friendshipsAnd we have discovered

New ones.We have some broken heartsAnd some shattered dreamsBut we also have each other.

We haveThis one, wild,

Joyful, frustrating, ridiculousThing

That we all went through Together.

So maybe we won’t everRun through the hallways again.

We won’t awkwardly strut,We won’t shuffle or

Be normal or fast walkOr dance or cry.

At least not in the same way.Instead

We’ll just Stand.

And revel, and Remember all of the memories

That the hallways hold.

Our Legacy Families

CBA Brothers Alumni Magazine Summer 2014 12

As depicted on our cover, in late April (during spring break in fact,) nearly 40 CBA alumni, ranging in age from the Class of 2013 to Class of 1942, gathered at the school to represent the Alumni Legacy in a special video tribute to benefit the school’s Annual Fund. A synopsis of the video is described on page 2.

It turns out that one of Christian Brothers Academy’s four-generation families was represented at the filming. Michael Boyle ’83 and his son, Alexander ’12 showed up to volunteer several hours of their time to be among the alumni celebrating and honoring the living legacy of CBA.

The Boyle family tree is a bit unique in that it began in the late 19th century – years before Christian Brothers Academy opened its doors on Willow Street in 1900. Turns out the Brothers of the Christian Schools were teaching and caring for the poor in Syracuse, long before CBA was established as an institution.

In 1867, when the city of Syracuse was not even 20 years old, the Christian Brothers were invited to open an orphan asylum in the city’s former poorhouse (which later evolved into the House of Providence). During that same time, the Brothers also shared

teaching duties at the school at St. John the Evangelist on the corner of State and Willow Streets, where the Brothers taught from 1870-1891. This is where the first generation of Boyles: William F. Boyle Sr., learned his lessons from the Brothers and graduated in 1890.

William was a member of the inaugural generation of Syracuse’s Brothers boys who reached prominent positions in religious, business, professional and political life. It was just the beginning of the Boyle and the Brothers legacy! See the center spread on the next two pages, which depicts four generations of Boyle graduates of CBA.

Editor’s Note: Our Legacy Families, highlighting three and four generation CBA families, will be a regular feature in Brothers magazine . We invite you to submit your “family tree” to be featured in a future issue . Submissions, including photos, can be sent to development@cbasyracuse .org or to: CBA Development Office, 6245 Randall Rd . Syracuse, NY 132141 .We look forward to hearing your stories and sharing them with the CBA family!

The Boyle Family TreeIn the late 1800’s, the basement of St. John the Evangelist Church served as the birthplace for the earliest CBA legacies. But few legacies are as long as that of the Boyle family. Beginning with the graduation of William F. Boyle Sr. in 1890; to William Sr.’s sons and grandsons from CBA on Willow Street; to Earl P.’s sons and grandchildren from CBA on Randall Road; to Sara Boyle’s graduation on the horizon in 2015, the Boyles lay claim to more than 114 years of Christian Brothers Academy history.

The Boyle family tree depicts one family’s CBA legacy and how the tradition of a Lasallian, Catholic education lives on, with promise for a strong future.

Alumni News

Forever bonded by their shared CBA experience, the Class of 1964 was transported back in time as they relived the lessons learned in the classrooms and on the playing fields, as they celebrated their 50th reunion on May 29—June 1.

The festivities began on Thursday with a round of golf for classmates and their guests, followed by dinner at the Turning Stone Resort.

Friday night marked the onset of the ‘official’ reunion activities, with a cocktail hour and dinner held in the W. Dennis Owen, AFSC ’44 Fine Arts Wing on the CBA campus. More than 60 classmates, guests, staff, board members, Principal Br. Joseph Jozwiak, FSC and Br. Gabriel Fiumano, FSC ’47 enjoyed an evening of revelry, reminiscing, and repast.

Sen. John DeFrancisco served as emcee for the evening, entertaining all with his quick wit and banter. The Senator led off the traditional reflection portion of the event, sharing a favorite anecdote about his years at CBA, and many classmates followed suit. Following dinner, several guests took a tour of the school, impressed by the changes and upgrades to the campus – computer, science, and engineering labs; white boards; art and music facilities; and the Callahan gym.

On Saturday afternoon, more than 30 attendees gathered at Jamesville Beach Park for a picnic. Following the picnic, several members of the class attended the Baccalaureate Mass offered that evening at Immaculate Conception Church in Fayetteville to honor the Class of 2014, as well as 1964, with a special remembrance of their deceased classmates. Msgr. Ronald Bill ’49 presided over the mass, which was enriched by

the participation of the CBA chorus, soloists, student readers, and altar servers.

On Sunday, the group was honored once again during the 2014 Commencement ceremonies. Class members were invited on stage to receive a gift from their alma mater. A proud moment ensued when class representatives John Brilbeck and Dick Carroll presented the school with a check for $100,000, the largest single year Jubilee Reunion Gift in the history of the school. (Note: The Class of 1950 presented CBA with a gift of $100,000 in 2000 in honor of the school’s Centennial Capital Campaign. Multi-year pledges were made by the Class of 1950 toward this generous gift.)

Brilbeck and Carroll addressed those assembled on behalf of the Class of 1964, expressing their gratitude for the education they received at CBA, the moral and spiritual tenets they gleaned from

their time at the school, and their appreciation for their ability and opportunity to pay it forward to current and future ‘Brothers’ with the scholarships supported by the Class of 1964 gift. Carroll stressed that this gift was presented, “with the memory of lost classmates, especially Dr. Joe Smith, and of our parents.”

“Fifty-four years ago, approximately 100 families in CNY made a decision that would change forever the life trajectory of a young man in their family,” Carroll said. “They made the decision to support their sons for four years at CBA. We are here to demonstrate that their decision was justified.”

Members of the committee who convened monthly to plan the event included: John Brilbeck, Richard J. Carroll, Paul Casey, James Dean, John DeFrancisco, Joseph Falcone, James Macallair and Samuel Rotondo.

1935CBA Honorary Board Member, U.S. Army Capt. Robert Gang, Jr. and U.S. Marine Corps Second Lt. Joseph Owen ’42, accompanied by Robert Gang III ’72, were aboard the April 5, 2014 WWII/Korean War Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. They were part of a group of about 65 veterans, treated as VIPs during a one-day tour of monuments in Washington. Upon arrival at Reagan airport and at every location they visited, including their return trip to Hancock, they were greeted by a “gauntlet” of thankful U.S. citizens who cheered them on to show appreciation for their service to our country. Bob was in his second year of law school when WWII broke out. He had been ROTC in college, so he was called up immediately. He served as a 2nd Lt./1st Lt. with the 630th Tank Destroyer Battalion and later as a Capt., as an Inspector General, and then with the Judge Advocate General’s Corp (JAG) where he was able to use his legal training. He was called back for the Korean War and taught ROTC at Syracuse University. He was also an attorney at MacKenzie Law Firm for many decades. Joe wrote about his experience in the Korean War in a book titled, Colder than Hell. The following synopsis on the back cover describes the book: “Joe Owen tells it like it was in this evocative, page-turning story of a Marine rifle company in the uncertain, early days of the Korean War. His powerful descriptions of close combat in the snow-covered mountains of the Chosin Reservoir and the survival spirit of his Marines provide a gritty real-life view of frontline warfare.” As a result of that warfare, Joe and many of his comrades were wounded. He was treated in U.S. naval hospitals for 17 months until May 1952 and never regained full use of his right arm. Joe was disability-retired from the Marine Corps as a first lieutenant and is a recipient of the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy.

David Hornstein was honored by the American Red Cross with a “Heartsaver Hero Award.” David, a student at Syracuse University, was at his parents' home studying for finals at about 1:00 p.m. on Dec. 4 when his father, Dale Hornstein came home from work not feeling well. Dale, 61, who has a history of atrial fibrillation, a type of irregular heartbeat he manages with medication, told his son he was going to lie down to rest. Dale then called his cardiologist Bill Berkery, who knew by the sound of his voice, that he could be suffering a near fatal irregular heartbeat. Dr. Berkery talked David, who had never performed CPR, through the process, as they awaited the ambulance. David did the compressions for about 10 minutes until the EMTs arrived. At Crouse Hospital, the doctors discovered that one of Dale’s arteries was 95 percent blocked and the other 75 percent blocked. They put in stents to reopen the clogged arteries. Dale suffered no heart or neurological damage thanks to his son’s efforts.
