1. Understand How Courses Transfer: Transferring courses is easier in Texas than many other states because Texas has a Common Course Numbering System. This means similar courses that are taught at public colleges and universities in the fi rst two years of college are identifi ed by common numbers. If you’re planning to transfer, these are often the best courses to choose.
2. Get Advising: Most students want to transfer from one school to another without hassles and without losing credit they have already earned. Luckily, you can do this by following a few important steps. Coastal Bend College has advisors trained to help you make the right decisions about what courses to take when you are preparing to transfer. Be sure to contact an advisor at the school you’re planning to transfer to as well. Getting help from both your current school and the new school is the best way to make your transition as smooth as possible.
3. Make a Transfer Plan: Start by identifying a major that corresponds with your chosen career fi eld. Plan carefully, because changing majors can result in course hours lost. There are many courses that transfer from one college or university to another, but your ability to apply those courses to your degree program will depend on if they fi t into your transfer school’s degree plan. Transferring schools will work best if you get information about the degree plan you want to follow at the school you want to attend, and then match the required course work as closely as possible prior to transferring. The earlier you identify a plan, the better chance you have of transferring without losing a single credit hour toward your degree plan.
4. Shop Around: Sometimes students make decisions about where to attend college without looking at all the options. Of course, the fi rst priority is fi nding a college that offers the degree program you want and has the other qualities you’re looking for in a school. As a transfer student, you may also want to look for a university that has a strong transfer relationship with CBC.
5. Take the Core Curriculum: If you plan to receive a bachelor’s degree from a public university, Texas law requires that you complete a core curriculum of between 42 and 48 credit hours. Each college or university identifi es which of its courses fi t into the core curriculum. If you complete the core curriculum with grades of “C” or better and transfer, the entire core curriculum transfers and substitutes for the core curriculum you would have taken at your new school. You may have to take additional course work if your transfer school has a larger core curriculum than the school you came from. If you complete only part of the core curriculum before you transfer, each course you completed should apply to the new school’s core curriculum.
6. Check into Field of Study Curricula: In addition to the core curriculum, Texas law authorizes the state to create fi eld of study curricula. A fi eld of study curriculum consists of freshman and sophomore courses that apply to a specifi c major. A student who successfully completes all or part of a fi eld of study curriculum prior to transferring will receive degree credit for the fi eld of study curriculum coursework (as long as the student stays in a degree program in that
discipline). Coastal Bend College offers fi eld of study curricula in teaching, computer science and criminal justice. More fi eld of study curricula will be added in the future.
7. Special Articulation Agreements: Coastal Bend College has articulation agreements with many public universities for transfer of credit. An articulation agreement is a contract that spells out exactly which courses will transfer to which degree programs and how the credit will be applied. Many schools have articulation agreements that will allow you to apply a complete associate’s degree program to a bachelor’s degree at your transfer school.
8. Know Which Courses and Programs are Designed to Transfer: It’s important to remember that there are several types of college credit. Academic transfer courses are the common courses that transfer to most public universities. Workforce education courses are designed to give you skills for immediate employment, and many of these courses may not transfer to universities. Workforce continuing education courses are also technical in nature but do not result in college credit at all. Associate of Arts (AA) Degrees and Associate of Science (AS) Degrees are designed to transfer. Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degrees contain some transfer courses and technical courses that may transfer to Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) Degrees.
9. Transfer Dispute Resolution: If you transfer to a public university in Texas and believe you were entitled to more transfer credit than you received, you have the right to ask for transfer dispute resolution. Most transfer credit disputes can be worked out by talking to your new university. If the dispute is not resolved after the college and university have worked together, the issue can be referred to the Commissioner of Higher Education for a fi nal decision.
10. “Reverse Transfer”: If you transfer from a two-year college to a university after you have accumulated 30 or more credit hours but before you complete an associate’s degree, Coastal Bend Colleges will be happy to transfer courses completed at the university back into your program and award an associate’s degree. You can continue working on the bachelor’s degree, but meanwhile will have a college degree.

A.C. Jones High School sophomores and parents are encouraged to attend the Passport Program, a dual credit information session presented by the high school and Coastal Bend College, to receive information regarding tuition-free courses students, who are Bee County residents, may take as early as this summer that count for both high school and college credit (dual credit). The Passport Program will take place at Coastal Bend College on March 25, 2011, starting at 9 a.m. in the Peter S. Marecek Physical Fitness Center. Tenth-graders, whose parents signed permission slips, will be brought to CBC to learn about earning credits in academic classes and/or in workforce programs. Students may take basic academic courses toward bachelor’s degrees or earn certifi cates in areas including welding, law enforcement, computers, certifi ed nursing and nail technology. They will also receive a CBC Passport that provides information about these courses. A Coastal Bend College identifi cation card opens doors to college resources including the library and computer labs and gives card holders free admission to college sports events and performances. Information sessions and campus tours are available for parents who attend. Parents may also participate in roundtable discussions regarding educational opportunities for their children. Lunch will be provided at no charge. For additional information, please contact Jennifer Linney at (361) 354-2722 or email her at [email protected].

Beeville Garden Club honors late membersA tree was planted on the grounds of Coastal Bend College’s Peter S. Marecek Physical Fitness Center in honor of the late Ida Clarice Matheson McGuffi n, a longtime garden club member and college supporter. McGuffi n joined the garden club when she returned to Beeville after living in Singapore for a number of years.
A member of one of Beeville’s oldest families, McGuffi n attended art and kinesiology classes at the college. She took Barnhart Series workshops in china painting, under several guest instructors, and studied under Simon Michael, a longtime CBC educator and artist. She also studied fl ower arranging under Gwen DeWitt. She took real estate courses at the college as well.
Another tree will be planted at the college on April 18 in memory of Celia Reyes, a longtime member of the garden club, who also died in 2010.

When you think about stress, you probably think of it as
a negative thing. But stress can actually be positive, too. For
example, let’s say you have a test on Thursday. You have a
choice: study or go hang out with your friends. Positive stress
will get you to hit the books so that you will ace that test. Positive
stress is purposeful, drives you to be goal-oriented and will help
eliminate negative stress.
Negative stress is the kind of stress that can happen if you
worry about that test so much that you can’t sleep, can’t eat and
can’t focus, sending you into panic mode and making you doubt
whether you can succeed.
We’ve put together a list of some things you can do to help
manage the negative stress and put yourself on a positive path
to success.
GET SOME EXERCISE! Physical activity releases
natural endorphins, which make you feel great and can alleviate
stress.
EAT HEALTHY FOODS! Avoid foods high in fat,
sugar and sodium. Eat healthy snacks and don’t skip meals.
TAKE BREAKS! Schedule a few short breaks
throughout the day to help minimize your stress. Stretch, go for
a walk, call a friend. When you get back to what you were doing,
you’ll work more effi ciently.
LEARN TO SAY NO! Don’t feel guilty when you have
to tell others no. Taking on additional work when you are already
too busy will only make things worse.
GET ENOUGH SLEEP! Most people need between
6-9 hours, but they’ll give up sleep when they’re under stress to
get more studying or work done.
MANAGE YOUR TIME EFFECTIVELY! Keep a
task list or a daily planner and make sure to include time for
yourself. Give priority to the most important activities and do
those fi rst.
TALK IT OUT! Bottled up emotions will only increase
your frustration and add to your stress. Share your feelings with
someone, like a friend, a family member, teacher or counselor.
Talking with someone else can help clear your mind and give
you a fresh perspective.
LAUGH! As the saying goes, “laughter is the best
medicine.” Maintaining your sense of humor and the ability to
laugh at yourself can really diffuse a stressful situation.
CONTROL WHAT YOU CAN! A major source of
stress comes from trying to control events or other people. When
confronted with a stressful situation, ask yourself: Is this my
problem? If the answer is no, then leave it alone. If the answer is
yes, fi gure out if you need to resolve it now or later.
HAVE A GOOD CRY! Crying during periods of stress
can be a healthy way to relieve your anxiety, and it might prevent
a headache or other physical consequences of keeping things
bottled up. But, if you are crying every day, this might be a sign
Manage Your Stress with Positive Habits

of depression and you should seek help.
DON’T SELF-MEDICATE! Drugs and alcohol won’t
get rid of the conditions that cause stress. Although they may
seem to provide temporary relief, they’ll only mask or disguise
problems.
GET HELP! Asking for help is defi nitely not a sign of
weakness. There are a lot of resources available to help students
deal with stress, so take advantage of them.
