From the PrincipalShare the JourneyOn a recent Sunday morning a group
of nearly 200 boys and their fathers
assembled at Point Walter to experience
the Share the Journey programme. This
parent-led undertaking has become a
signature event for our College and was
again enthusiastically embraced by our
community. As the morning unfolded, it
was very evident that a time of great
significance was being shared by many
of those present.
Contemporary society presents many
potential role models for boys in the
form of celebrities from all walks of life.
Unfortunately, few of these people have
any interest in their status as role models
or possess the values that we would wish
our own children to develop. One of the
important objectives of our programme
is to remind the boys that their dad is
someone with a wealth of life experience
who loves them unconditionally.
Whilst the individual circumstances of
many of the fathers and other male adults
in attendance would have been quite
diverse, they were united in their desire to
enhance their relationships with the boys
and to be strong and positive influences in
their development. Research repeatedly
shows that strong male role-modelling
is an important contributor to boys
developing a positive self-image, forming
mutually beneficial friendships and having
a healthy respect for women.
These aims are clearly compatible with
the broader pastoral development

programme undertaken by the College.
I’m sure they are also outcomes that
every family is working hard to achieve at
home. I commend all of the fathers who
had the courage and foresight to attend
last weekend and to make this essential
investment in their sons.
I would also like to thank all of those who
were responsible for the planning and
presentation of this programme:
• Dads – Mr Tim Allan, Mr John Atkinson,
Mr Barry Bourne, Mr Tim Kullack and
Mr Leon Yurak who worked tirelessly to
ensure the success of the day.
• Mr Mike Skinner and his son Alex (Class
of 2013) who each delivered poignant
and thought-provoking talks at different
times during the morning.
• The many other staff and senior students
who contributed to the day in many
different ways.
Perhaps the real power of this programme
rests in its simplicity and its capacity to
remind dads about the critical function
they play in the lives of their sons. It
emphasises the fact that opportunities
to interrelate need to be consciously
arranged. If we delay the accumulation of
‘frequent father points’, the years and the
opportunities can quickly pass by.
ACC Swimming CarnivalCongratulations to our swimmers and their
coaches on their admirable achievements
at the ACC ‘A’ Division Swimming Carnival
on Wednesday of last week. Ably led by
their coaches, Mr John Rear, Mr Stephen
Hunter and Mr Jason Matthews, and
Captain of Swimming, Conor Cameron,
the team won the Senior Boys’ Shield
whilst being narrowly defeated for the
Boys’ Aggregate Trophy. Each member
of the squad prepared thoroughly and
gave of their best on the day. This is
the benchmark for all of our activity at
the College and our swimmers certainly
achieved this measure.
More specific details including individual
achievements are included in the
Newsroom on the website.
Senior BallA wonderful night of sartorial elegance
and celebration was enjoyed by the young
men in our senior class last Saturday
evening. The gentlemen in attendance
looked resplendent, were attentive to
their partners and danced enthusiastically
throughout the evening. Congratulations
to all of those Year 12 students who sought
to ensure that the event was a reflection of
their growing maturity and representative
of the culture of our College.
Easter WishesAs all students and staff prepare to take a
break at the end of this term, I hope that
families are able to enjoy some extended
time together. Those who are travelling
during these holidays are wished safe
travel and exciting adventures.
While wishing all of our families a restful
break, I also hope that you will avail
yourselves of the Easter liturgies in your
parish and thereby enjoy all that this
season has to offer. The invitation to enjoy
a ‘new birth’ and to change for the better
is one which all people of goodwill are
keen to accept.
School re-commences for all students on
Tuesday 21 April.

Community cookbook: a call for recipes
CBC Fremantle is proud to be a part of raising good young men
of our community, who have the skills and courage to face and
overcome challenges and to form positive, mutually beneficial
relationships. The gentlemen of CBC are the guardians of the
future, and their positive male contribution to our society
provides us all with hope and faith in a better world.
To highlight the journey from today’s boy to tomorrow’s
gentleman, CBC is planning to produce a community cookbook
celebrating all that is nurturing and resilient about our young men
and their families. A timeless collection of recipes that encourages
our young men to be culinary heroes from their first foray in the
kitchen, whether it is coping with a simple breakfast for Mother’s
Day, wooing a romantic interest (it will happen!), or providing
hearty meals for their children when the time comes.
How you can help• Submit your favourite family recipe to us with specific quantities
(eg millilitres, grams, tablespoons, cups, etc, and in Australian
standard measuring) and easy to follow instructions. Your recipes
will need to be tried and tested prior to submission to ascertain the
correct quantities.
• Please specify how many people the recipe will feed.
• We are specifically seeking dishes that hold a place in your heart,
and are particularly enjoyed by your son. If your contribution is
included, your family will be acknowledged in the final publication.
• Degree of difficulty is from zero to hero, but tasty dishes with
a focus on classic simplicity appealing to all ages would be
particularly suitable.
• Recipes will need to be in a ‘cut and paste’ format, for example
included in the body of an email or in a Word document.
You are invited to contribute to our community cookbook and help us acknowledge the traditions of our College, the love and support of our families, and the journey of today’s boys…tomorrow’s gentlemen.
CBC Fremantle Newsletter | Week 9 Term 1 | Page 9
• Your submission may not make the final book – but don’t let
that hold you back. The sooner you send in your fabulous family
recipe, the better the chance that it will be included.
• Stories about the dish are also happily accepted, for example
who passed on the recipe, which cuts of meat are best, or
perhaps a particular occasion when you served the dish.
CBC has a long and proud association with the Fremantle
community, so please feel free to mention particular landmarks
or places you shop if appropriate to your tale.
Timeline and other details
It is hoped to produce the CBC cookbook in time for your
Christmas shopping, therefore the deadline for submitting your
recipes is 8 May 2015.
The publication will sell for cost price and be available to purchase
for members of the CBC community and extended families and
friends. Please address any enquiries to Cherie Butcher at
[email protected] or 9430 2001.
