FROM OUR PARTNER AT THE

CALGARY BOARD OF EDUCATION

When newcomers register for school at the CBE Kingsland Reception Centre, In-School

Settlement Workers (ISSWs’) offer individual support and services to all newcomer

students and their families. The ISSWs are a critical component of the operations at the

CBE Kingsland Reception Centre as they are the first contact for the families at the reception

desk. They are integral to a process that orients, admits, and assesses children in preparation

for their first day of school. The ISSWs are able to assess the immediate and longterm settlement needs of the families and in follow-up meetings provide directassistance, information and referral opportunities regarding government, community, cultural and social services available for newcomers. These services and resources

(often provided in a family’s home language) assist families to successfully integrate intotheir new lives in Calgary and Canada. We are profoundly thankful for our partnership with theIn-School Settlement Program.

FROM OUR PARTNER AT THE

CALGARY CATHOLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT

The Calgary Catholic School District values the partnership with the In-School

Settlement (ISS) program for the past eight years recognizing it as an integralcomponent of our District Reception Centre. With over 3000 students registering

each year, a large majority of those families are supported by the ISSworkers either through the Reception Centre or at their worksite in our district

schools. Through immediate assessment of family needs and then follow-up

meetings, the ISSW’s provide information to help families deal with the cultural, linguistic and settlement needs experienced with the challenges ofbeing new to Canada. We believe that our newcomer students and their families are

more successful due to this valued partnership.

Hi *ISSW!

Of course I remember you! We are all doing good here in Calgary, thank you. I hope

you are, too. *My son* is settling well at school, although he still mentions his friends from Ottawa. Our first winter here has been a challenge, as it is indeed colder here than in Ontario. My husband is happy with his new employer as well. I am thinking of going back to school but there's no definite plan yet where to go.

*My son* already has an RESP with another bank but I will check out the link you sent and will also forward it to friends.

Thank you for checking on us. Have a great day!

Sincerely,

MEXICOApril 22, 2014

Through this letter, I would like say thank you to all the help that was given to us as new permanent

residents in Canada, City of Calgary, AB. *ISSW connected us with the community by giving us the

information, resources, and steps to start our new life Calgary. One of these resources was by helping

us to obtain library cards. With this privilege we are able to keep informed about the different programs

in the community, access to books, CD’s, movies and most important tool, “the internet” With this tool

my children are able to find answers to their school assignments and to keep connected with others.

The access to the Food bank was offered to us, as we were struggling with finances. This is a service

that I will be thankful forever!

We learned about the importance of having SIN numbers, AB health cards, hospitals, clinic and how to

find a family Dr. We also learned about the interpreter services at the Dr.’s office and at the schools.

We received help with referrals to obtain furniture for our new home. I was registered to a course called

1000 voices to get ready for job interviews and job search which, by the way I successfully finished.

We received winter clothes that we had no idea is necessary for the winters in Canada.

Maps and transit information was explained to us, so we know our way around the city.

I could keep going, describing more of the services we received from The Calgary Bridge Foundation

for Youth through *ISSW, but I have no words to express how thankful we are to found one of your

angels from your foundation.

캐나다 생활에서 즐길 수 있는 축제와 여름 캠프에 대한 자세한 소개와 팁을 주셔서 정말유용했습니다.

The tips and information about Calgary’s summer festivals and summer camps provided by you are incrediblyuseful for me and my family.

Especially, the information you provided us was not only from the website but also from your personal experiencesand that helped me to understand and have more knowledge about summer activities.

항상 가장 필요한 정보를 잘 선택하여 알려주시고 친절한 도움을 주셔서 진심으로 감사합니다.정성껏만드신첨부파일도감사합니다.

I really appreciate that you always select the very needy information for Koreans and support Koreans withkindness. Also, I would like to say thank you for the attached file regarding summer activities.

Hi *ISSW,

There are no words to describe how grateful I and my family are for your orientation, attention and support, thank you so much! We know you are just a piece in the organization thatyou represent, behind we know that there are many good people helping without expecting anything in return,

but we want to say thank you to each one.

To be honest with you, right now we are sad for the bad news for the loss of my baby, but in other hand always

we receive your nice words and attention.

The next Monday I'll start a part time job, and thanks to your organization I have the tickets for busand train.

Thank you again, my whole family would send many blessings and lots of good vibes... My next goal is toget into a training program (Heavy Duty in Momentum) and get a better conditions for my family and be able to

Dear *ISSW*,

I am writing this letter to express my appreciation to you and all your colleagues who work

in Calgary Bridge Foundation for Youth.

I would like to thank you for your follow ups and good useful information you shared with us with

regard to our settlement works. Your help and support played vital role in making our settlement works to

be done smoothly and flawlessly, especially with regard to my child.

I decided to write this letter after I have finished receiving services from other organizations who have plansand aim to help immigrants during their settlement in order to be able to make a comparison.

I found your help very useful and applicable comparing to other organizations who mostlyasked for signing their service forms to be shown to government, the services that sometimes not providedor provided with unacceptable quality.

Thank you and hope for you and your organization future success.

centers. I really want to appreciate your kindness, ability andresourcefulness in counselling. I’m also very grateful for being able to contact

you at almost any time. Hope we would always keep in touch.

Hi *ISSW,

I am writing this mail just to say thank you as you come to see me on my phone call and guideme about various immigrant associations which are helpful for the people like me. It was a

very productive and helpful meeting.

I still remember those earlier days of my life when I just arrived to Canada and looking for someways to find a place in the Canadian society. I attended those group sessions conducted by you.

Isn't it amazing how I kept your contact number for five years and called you again? Andyou did not disappoint me. Thank you for responding to my call and giving me some of yourprecious time.

I will surely keep in touch and keep you posted but not after five years this time :-) take care

a great work towards our settlement today. We have been to a number of

IRANJuly 27, 2014

Dear *ISSW:

I truly appreciate your help and support. The information that you provided was truly useful andprecious. I should acknowledge that your approach, unlike that of other career/settlement counselor whom I had the

pleasure of meeting at different immigrant serving agencies here in Calgary, was really professional andtargeted in the sense that you did not come up with a bunch of prefabricated pieces of advise that were of a "one sizefits all" nature.

What I liked about your approach was the information session that you organized to know more about your client'simmediate needs and careful notes that you took on that day. These notes were the base of your work

for the next meeting during which you did your best to provide some practical solutions and guidelinesfor your client.

This is what makes your approach different from other practitioners, I think, those practitioners do not go beyond yourinformation session, because they need to serve other clients who are waiting outside. To the best of my knowledge, thesegood people just repeat what they had already told others, with only one difference they just change the name of the clienteach time but prescription remains the same. What makes them happy is just the number of intakes regardless of theoutcome of their work.

Thank you again

Hello *ISSW,

Hope you had a refreshing weekend. I am writing to say a very big thank you for your Kindness to my Family and

I. As newly landed immigrants, we have no friends nor family in Calgary. We are Total Strangers believing God for

directions everyday. You came to us like an Angel on Assignment to help us settle in this land.

We did not know how to commute neither do we know where to start from but you showed us the way. You did not stop

there, you gave us assignments to do and you followed up with calls at intervals. You were early on our scheduled

meetings and you always had a reassuring smile that all will be fine. You were kind and patient with me. The kind ofLove you showed to me is one that exist between Sisters even though we are from different parts of the world.

I really appreciate you for spending your time, money, strength and other resources to be there for us. Thank you for helping

us with the registration at the Library. It beats my imagination that you did all these for FREE! I wonder how I canrepay you. Please lets keep in touch. You are hereby My first friend in Calgary. I look forward to hosting you in my housesomeday. Please do not refuse my invitation. I pray that God will send Destiny helpers your way as you have done for us. Dohave a fulfilled week ahead.

To Ivan, Sandra and the whole Calgary Bridge Foundation team,

I’d like to sincerely thank Ivan, Sandra and everyone at the CBFY for your hospitality on May 13th

that was extended to both myself and my colleague Lissette. Visiting from a similar settlement program in

Red Deer, we were hoping to share best practices and learn from the successful InSchool & Library Settlement programs being run through the CBFY. It was our greatpleasure to have spent a full day shadowing different practitioners in schools, libraries and at both theSchool Board intake centres.

During the day we shared many ideas and learned much from the team that we will hopefully be able toimplement in the Central Alberta region & help us expand our settlement programs. We look forward tocontinuing to share information and best practices with the CBFY and welcome you and the CBFY teamanytime to visit us at the Central Alberta Refugee Effort.

Dear *ISSW,

We hope you are doing very well. We want to share with you the latest news about our family.

With your valuable help *our daughter* was transferred from *School 1* to *School 2*. With this

transfer she has been happy again, and recovered her motivation to study hard. She is doing

pretty well. We are amazed about how positively her adaptation has been. This new school hasopened her new horizons and possibilities such as PE and drama.

*Our son* has been learning a lot in *his* school. He enjoys to play sax and learn French. He has expressed indifferent occasions how happy he is there.

On the other hand, I tell you that *my husband* got a place to study in Bredin Centre for Learning. He is

studying English there and he is very happy because of its methodology. At the same time, it has

been an excellent opportunity for learning more about Canadian culture.

Thank you so much for your cooperation and support, with your help our settlement hasbeen the most memorable process, you are our angel here!!

Dear Sirs/Madams,

With the following letter we would like to express our gratitude to the Calgary Bridge Foundation for Youth, the In SchoolSettlement Program and personally to our *ISSW*.

Our first interaction with the CBFY was at the CBE center at Kingsland when an advisor presented the Foundation and advised us onthe very important for us information on how to apply for Child Tax Benefit and Alberta Child Health Benefit. He told us that one of hiscolleagues would call us in short time with more information and advices.

Just a week later *ISSW* called us and we arranged a meeting. She advised us on different programs andorganizations supporting immigrants in their first steps in Canada, especially low-income ones like us.She regularly notifies us about different events promoting immigrant inclusion, children’s entertainment and recreation – for example aChristmas party organized by the Firefighters, YMCA free membership for children at grade 6, Halloween discount prices for Calgaryswimming pools and many, many more.

*ISSW* regularly informs and invites us on different workshops on Immigrant assistance and orientation topic.

*ISSW* strongly encouraged us to believe in ourselves and pursue our Canadiandreams, to develop new skills and to adapt ourselves to the labor market, to follow acollege program which would give us better working opportunities. She even advised us on certain programs based on our previousexperience and aspirations.

We know we can rely on her support and advices for which we are very grateful. As she speaks our mothertongue Bulgarian, we can communicate very easily when having difficulties. She takes our problems very deeply and tries to help us

with the best of her skills and expertise. We consider the CBFY and the In School Settlement Program as greattools for helping new immigrants and we are very grateful for their assistance.

Sincerely,

*A newcomer family from Bulgaria

Hello *ISSW,

Greetings! Thanks for your outstanding support extended, It was when we

were facing the grim challenges of settling down as a PR you rightly advised us withthe various options/ benefit schemes available. Honestly we were only focusing on jobsearch and least concentrated on settlement as we thought this would be temporary.

The situation worsened with neither going good. We should accept that youradvise helped to quickly establish contacts with Clinics,Library and back to school programs which for sure would have taken us a very longtime.

Thanks again for your support.

*ISSW,

First of all I'm expressing my gratitude over your hard work andeffort dedicated to us. Recently you came to deliver a laptop for me. I was very delighted tohear from you that I'm eligible for a system and I was more and more happy when you picked itfor me and delivered it to us later, as it was very inconvenient for us to pick it up on that day . I'mexpecting this would aid my upcoming university admission in engineering to a great extend as it

is impossible to continue higher education without the aid of technology, viz. aComputer .And also I like to express my apology for the delay in informing you and contactingyou back after the retrieval. I'm once again thanking you...

Have a nice day.....!!

Thanking You,

Yours Sincerely,

Dear *ISSW,

Greetings! I wanted to thank you and the program for the wonderful program that you

are running. It has been a great support for us as newcomers toCanada. With limited resources and minimal friends in a new country your program hashelped our children in enjoying their first Christmas and holiday season. In addition it has also

familiarized them with the Canadian culture. All the guidance and information thatyou provided on recreational activities and our other needs including child health care and

kindergarten have been very useful. The Fire Fighters Christmas event was wonderful. The gifts were very thoughtful, the children really loved them and we as parents really appreciateit. Thank you once again.

Merry Christmas, Seasons Greetings and happy holidays to you your families and the teamrunning this program

Best regards,*a family from Pakistan
