HEVRA KADISHA TO BE HONORED
From the Rabbi
How do we determine what our community needs to do?
Some of the influence comes from sober reflection on needs. Some of it is the “squeaky wheel” syndrome. Some of it is what we have
undertaken already. And some of it is a function of what our financial resources are. You know all about this communal dilemma from your personal life. We are all people of conscience, moderated by a diversity of values. Each of us has some pet cause in our lives, perhaps motivated by personal experience. There are any number of “right things to do.” When it comes down to it, we each have limited resources to devote to meeting needs, from housing to recreation to charitable giving. Maybe the most sacred task in the Jewish community is determining the way we will respond to needs. Lots of organizations presume to take on specific sets of needs, but only one is comprehensive in that consideration: the Jewish Federation. There is no shortage of petitioners for the legitimate needs of community: education, hunger relief, social services, Israel, community relations, cultural expression, unemployment, and more. Sober reflection can be overwhelming yet Federation cannot spend more than it collects.
Pretty soon you will receive a call and ask for a commitment to the Jewish Federation of Pinellas and Pasco Counties. Please respond positively and generously. The deliberations within the community should leave no one neglected, but without sufficient resources, they must. You can make more of a contribution than money. A few hours of your time on Super Sunday can help Federation reach out to more members of our community. You can also volunteer Sunday, February 27 to be a part of CBI’s 10th annual Mitzvah Day. We will go out into our community to show that we care!! Join us!! All it takes to be part of our community is a willingness and a little bit of time.
Shalom,
Rabbi Jacob Luski

Today’s date is January 31. There’s civil unrest in parts of the Arab world, triggering watchful-waiting from our beloved Israel, and delicate choreography from our United States. Domestically, 2011 is off to an optimistic economic
and political start, as economic indicators and forecasts are promising, and the volume of political rancor is noticeably lower. And, while there’s record-breaking cold and snow accumulation throughout the country, locally, we are basking in comfortable temperatures and warm sunshine. For many of us, there are conflicting feelings of anxiety and calm. But, within our CBI and among our CBI family, I feel centered and in-balance. Thank you – and let’s continue to strengthen, illuminate, and embolden each other.
Karen Wolchuck Sher,
President
From the President
My family is very fortunate to have the
advice of our 93 year old Uncle Peter. Having lived
for almost a century he has many words of
wisdom. One thing he tells us is that whether or not
we realize it, that things are constantly changing. Through reading,
watching television, speaking with others, or attending a class, we
subconsciously take in the information, process it, accept some of it
and discard the rest. God blessed humans with cognitive skills and the
ability to process information. What we do with this information is
our choice. Jewish traditions handed down through the ages are
observed somewhat the same and somewhat differently, depending
on your history. Our interpretation of these observances can mean
something today and something totally different tomorrow. And,
thank God there are differences, otherwise life would be very
boring. As Mitzvah Day is fast approaching and the economic state
has changed so much over the past few years, there are more and
more people in need of help. It only takes a few hours of time to
devote to a project. Why not show your appreciation for what you
have by giving to someone else? So, mark your calendar, send in your
registration forms and say yes you will help. If for some reason you
are not available, there is an extensive wish list you can contribute
to. Todah Rabah to Diane Litt and Eileen Richman for co-chairing this
worthy project.

From the Executive Director
There was a time... over thirty years ago.. when Jewish music makers in Israel and America competed to create new melodies for our ancient texts. There was a time... when talented Israeli boys and girls (yes, GIRLS !!) toured the U.S. and Latin America, bringing us the best of these new compositions. Many of the songs and melodies that we now consider classics of Jewish music were prize winners in that annual competition. Join us as we learn a little about some of the composers, the texts, and -- above all -- the music. And, if the spirit moves you, join us in singing some of the well known-- and not quite as well known -- melodies that have enriched Jewish musical life.

Larry and I want to thank everyone who participated in the 50th Anniversary celebration of his Bar Mitzvah. We had a great Kiddush thanks to our many friends and family who help and attended. I want to say a special thanks to: Joan Redisch and her organizational skills and spreadsheets (she never sleeps); Ruth Ann Mizrahi for her shopping and schlepping, baking and quiet organizational skills (and her daughter for her fabulous cookies); Joan Epstein for her very special cholents which included some new and interesting tastes (Larry’s favorite and special request); Diana Litt who chopped, fixed, baked, rolled, and made us laugh; Ricki Lewis who peeled, chopped, baked, and carefully watched the oven doors and timing; Gail Frye: the energizer bunny; baker and tuna maker extraordinary; and to the many husbands who supported all of us with shopping, peeling, pushing and schlepping! Of course, we could not have done it without Wilma, Pei, Chris; and the Saturday helpers, Lee Shenofsky, Livia Wein, and Sara Latham and Ariel who put it all together. If I forgot anyone, please flog me later, but accept my thanks and gratitude.
Stay tuned for next month: a report on Sisterhood Shabbat and Leadership Institute.
Alice G Ettinger, Sisterhood President
We certainly have had a very busy winter so far! Where to begin?
Gail Frye and I attended the 2010 Women’s League Convention in Baltimore, MD. We learned so much, got rejuvenated, schmoozed, laughed, cried, danced and sang. We were honored to accept a scholarship award for Harvey Peskin Halprin from Mercaz USA for his essay. We presented our check for Books for Baltimore, the 2010 charity of the Convention. Please see the thank you video on our CBI website from the school children in Baltimore. There wasn’t a dry eye in the hall! We came back refreshed (despite the lack of sleep) and filled with new ideas for all of us.
We have celebrated wonderful Birthday Kiddushim monthly. If you have enjoyed having these celebrations and the great food that CBI Sisterhood can create, please help us in donating your time to our kitchen crew. We are having such a great time in the kitchen. If each member would donate one day, it would only roll around to you again in perhaps six months. Once you come out to bake and/or cook, you will find it a most rewarding experience. As always, your financial support is also gratefully appreciated. Give Ruth Ann Mizrahi a call to donate time
SISTERHOOD
Dear Fellow Congregants,
As I sit in my office writing this month’s bulletin I am almost laughing out loud. Just thinking about some of the jokes told by our guest comedian at the outstanding Scotch and Steak night makes me chuckle. Nearly 70 guys bellied up for a good time and
were lucky enough to take home a souvenir shot glass at the end of the event. Yasher koach to Sandy Brasch and her team of USYers for deliciously preparing and expertly serving our juicy dinner. Thanks, also, to Jesse Rodman for his planning and advice on this event. I am already getting excited for next year.
Plans are in place for the upcoming World Wide Wrap in February. Mark your calendars to come hear CBI’s newest author, Ernest Drucker, share highlights from his book on February 6th
following Minyan and breakfast.
In March we will have our annual Men’s Club Shabbat. If you would like to participate in the service, please email me at [email protected]. Plan to join us as the 2010 Man of the Year is revealed. As always, feel free to join us at any of our events. Encourage your friends to come along for a meaningful, enjoyable time.

THE PAULINE RIVKIND TALMUD TORAH
The Heh class of the Pauline Rivkind Talmud Torah enjoyed leading services for the residents of Philip Benjamin Tower and had a wonderful dinner with them. This is exciting when our youth can share intergenerational events with seniors. On February 13, the Talmud Torah is excited about
another Sunday Seminar. This event will be about kashrut and Jewish foods. Mitzvah Day will be arriving on Sunday, February 27th. Classes will not meet so that parents and children are free to participate in community service projects. Get your costumes out. The students always look forward to Purim and the Costume Parade. Don’t forget bring a creative gragger. You may win a prize. Prizes are also awarded for the best costumes in different age categories. Come, have fun and enjoy yourselves.

CBI USY NEWS AND VIEWS
As I exited one of the largest minyans in which I had ever davened, I began thinking I was at USY International Convention 2010, in Orlando, Florida, just having finished a Mincha service of nine hundred teenagers. The entire weekend was overwhelming and incredible. As our Chapter’s Social Action/Tikkun Olam Vice President, I learned a lot of tips about how to bring more mitzvot into our everyday lives that I can’t wait to share with everyone.
So, after this service, I began thinking about how wonderful the year 2010 was for USY and how difficult it would be for 2011 to surpass it. However, it’s only the second month of the year, and SPUSY has already excelled. In January, we had a mystery bus ride with our awesome Kadimaniks, which was a ton of fun and an incredible bonding experience. The USYers helped serve at two meals and resumed Hebrew High School classes, many preparing for their graduation in the spring. Also, our Chapter has begun preparations for Spring Sub-Regional Convention, which we will be hosting in April, for the first time in a very long time. February also brings the World Wide Wrap and Yom Disney, an event at the Orlando theme park for USYers around the state.
Can’t wait to see what the rest of the year brings for SPUSY!
Naomi LeVine, SATO Vice President
YOUTH DEPARTMENT
The new year is off to a fantastic start! January was filled with excitement in the Youth Department as the kids got back to routines and some awesome youth events. After participating in Seudah Shilshit, which the Youth Department sponsored, Kadimaniks and USYers boarded a party bus for an evening of fun and friendship which culminated with a bonfire and smores! CBI was well represented at HaNegev Regional General Board Weekend at beautiful Camp Ramah Darom. Reva Halprin was selected to represent SPUSY as a young leader and participated in programs with other young leaders to develop their leadership skills. Julia Halprin, SPUSY President attended workshops with other chapter presidents and Yael Reich, Jesse Sokolov and Ariel Reich attended as members of the Regional General Board. Thanks to all the USYers who helped serve at the Men’s Club Scotch and Steak night and “Got Shabbat Dinner” hosted by Sisterhood. Halutzim and Kadima had a blast at the BOING Jump Center where they bounced the afternoon away at this fun co event. Todah Rabah to the Kobernick Family for sponsoring the January Dine and Dash in honor of Alyssa special birthday. Plans are in full swing for the Mercaz Sub Regional Convention April 1-3 2011. Please let me know if you would like to host USYers in your home or take part in the planning of this special weekend. BOOK REVIEW
An Italian Renaissance, Choosing Life in Canada by Robert Eli Rubinstein
Considerable time elapsed after the Shoah before its survivors, in the main, could speak about their experiences even to their children, let alone publicly. Those who were able did find ways to separate memory from nightmare and talk or write openly, if painfully, to the world about what they had witnessed or, worse, experienced. Though even they, in doing so, would never be able to lift the heavy, leaden stones from their hearts. Today, more than 6-1/2 decades after the war, a considerable number of survivor memoirs have been published. Indeed there are even public foundations, such as the Azrieli Foundation, that encourage and assist survivors to write their personal stories. Children of the survivors, too, have written about their parents’ experiences. Many, if not most, of these next-generational works have focused on the emotional disability and the resulting familial dysfunction that the war wrought. Often, the narrator tries to explain but always also escape from and not help carry the burdens borne by his or her parents. An Italian Renaissance: Choosing Life in Canada (Urim Publications), by Robert Eli Rubinstein, is also a book by a child of survivors about his parents’ experiences. But it is unlike most second-generation works. It is not a memoir of survivorship; it is not a chronicle of horror and rescue; nor is it a self-obsessed exculpation of personality disorder. An Italian Renaissance is a thoughtful, purposive reflection about the experiences of the author’s parents before, during and after the Shoah, a near-philosophical exploration of history, memory, facts, truth, character, human strength and human frailty. Rubinstein writes tenderly, yet always honestly, about his parents. He reconstructs, as best he can in the circumstances, pieces of a broken narrative into an unbroken story without embellishment. He reconciles truth with memory without concealment. Understanding how his parents became successful, good human beings, despite their experiences in the Shoah, is the touching core of the book. The book takes its title from the fact that Rubinstein’s parents spent the immediate postwar period as refugees from Hungary in a displaced persons’ camp in Grugliasco, northern Italy, near Turin (Torino). The author was born in Torino during his parents’ internment in Grugliasco. This is a rare work of filial homage that contains within its pages example and inspiration for us all.

FAMILY PROGRAMS
As we look back over last month’s activities we can feel proud that the Youth Department is an involved member of our Congregational Family! We sponsored the January 8th Seudah Shlishit, served at Sisterhood Shabbat “Got Shabbat Dinner” and at the Mitzvah Men’s Club Scotch and Steak night. When we work together and help each other wonderful things occur and we are ALL winners. A special thank you to Dr. Jeffrey Pincus for contacting USYers and Alumni to participate in USY and Alumni Shabbat January 28th. It was especially a thrill to see multi generations leading prayers together. We were all delighted by the sermon presented by Dr. David Wein. Thanks to all who participated. Before services, the USYers shared a beautiful Shabbat dinner with the residents at Toby Weinman Assisted Living Residence. The residents were all smiles as we led them in song and prayer! Each year at this time our thoughts are filled with promises to ourselves, resolutions for the new year. I hope you will resolve to become an active member of your community. I assure you, you will reap the benefits from your involvement. During this month you will
have an opportunity to join your CBI family, along with participants from all over North America, who will gather Sunday morning, February 6th for the World Wide Wrap. Each year during this event I think of the connection we have to Jews everywhere, as we daven Shaharit with our individual communities. The following Sunday, February 13th our Preschool will hold a spaghetti dinner and we are all invited. This is an important fundraiser for the Preschool and a chance to enjoy a fun casual dinner. February 27, 2011 is our annual Mitzvah Day. This is our chance to give back something to the greater community and wonderful family activity. Plan ahead to join us Sunday, March 6th for the annual CROP (Community Responding to Overcome Poverty) Walk. As you can see there are a variety of wonderful programs and events to attend. I hope you will join us and make this year meaningful for you and your CBI family.
