1 CHILDREN’S BIBLE LESSONIllustrations by Paula Rondeau

Many generations after Noah, a man named Abramlived in a city called Haran. Sarai was his wife. One day,God promised Abram that He would make a nationfrom his descendants. God told Abram to take his wifeand everything he had and leave for a country that Godwould show him. Without asking any questions, at age75, Abram obeyed God and left Haran. He took hisnephew Lot with him.

Because of Abram’s obedience to God, he was veryblessed. He was rich and had a lot of sheep and cattle. He continued to travel with Lot to the land that God hadpromised him. God blessed them so much that theirherds became too big to be together. Lot decided to goa different way. He dwelt in the plains of Sodom andGomorrah.

After Lot left for his land in Sodom and Gomorrah,God promised Abram that he would have all the landthat he could see. God would make this possiblethrough his seed (Abram’s descendants). Abram and

Sarai did not have any children yet. They had faith. This means they believed God would do what Hesays.

At age 99, Abram’s name was changed to Abraham.Abraham means “father of many nations.” His wifeSarai’s name was changed to Sarah, which means“princess.”

Shortly after, three beings appeared to Abraham. Two of them were angels. The other was the Onewho would later become Jesus Christ. They toldAbraham that Sarah was going to have a son, andthat they should name him Isaac. They also toldAbraham that Sodom and Gomorrah were going tobe destroyed. Abraham begged that the city wouldnot be destroyed because his nephew Lot was there.God told Abraham He would not destroy a city ifthere were only 10 righteous people. But God couldnot find many righteous people in Sodom orGomorrah. It was full of wickedness. Lot and his fam-ily had to flee the city. They were warned not to lookback at the city as they were leaving. Lot’s wife dis-obeyed. She turned into a pillar of salt.

When Sarah was 90 years old, God kept His prom-ise. She had a son named Issac. Abraham andSarah were surprised that God would give them a

child, because they were so old. But God alwayskeeps His promises.

Abraham obeyed God his entire life. He did what Godasked him to do and he believed God when a promisewas made. Abraham was tested again in his faith andobedience. God told Abraham to give his only son as aburnt offering. This was a very difficult test. The nextmorning, Abraham arose with his son Isaac. They leftfor the mountains as God commanded him.

Abraham did exactly what God told him to do. Hetrusted in God because he knew God promised manygenerations to come from his seed. After a three-dayjourney, Abraham and Isaac came to where the sacri-fice was going to be. Abraham tied up his son andplaced him on the altar. Many thoughts must havegone through his mind. Yet he obeyed God. Just asAbraham was about to slay his son, he heard a voicecommanding him to stop! God now knew Abrahamwould obey Him in everything. Isaac was released. Aram was spotted in the bushes. It was given as theoffering instead.

Abraham was very blessed because of his obedi-ence. He lived a long life. Sarah died at age 127.Abraham remarried and died at age 175. God kept hispromises. Abraham’s descendents, as many as thesand of the sea, are still living today.
