September Meeting

At the September meeting CBRIS club officers acted as producers for the installation of new officers. A

cleverly written skit by VP Lynn Stuart had everyone laughing even Lynn herself! The outgoing directors

Chris Dickinson, Elaine Fischer and Dave Henley were thanked and the three new directors Mark Greene,

Jane Jordan, and Mikey Lango were welcomed. The rest of the board remains as before - President

Barbara Pesek, Vice President Lynn Stuart, Secretary Carol Dahout, Treasurer Mary Collins and 2nd year

Directors Philippa Alvis, Peter Marra and Kalpana Shyam. Please see the minutes for a detailed account

as club secretary Carol Dahout gave a good review of the performance.

CBRIS Meeting Minutes September 5, 2014

After our long summer break, the first meeting of the CBRIS year was presided over by our steadfast

president, Barbara Pesek. We had some new members in attendance – Alice Gary, Cara Vainish and

Jane Kwant, and we are happy to welcome them. We also welcome new members Manju Kumar and

Corliss Greene.

Happy birthday wishes were extended to Lynn Stuart, Jane Kwant and Christine Dickinson.

The first order of business was the installation ceremony of the officers for the coming year. The skit

was deftly written by Lynn Stuart and somewhat ably performed by Barbara, me, Mary and Lynn. The

setting was a producer meeting of Iris Dreamworld Productions. The time: 2014; the place: Hollywood;

the purpose: to review past productions and upcoming project needs. Lynn fondly remembered “Attack

of the 50 foot Iris”, produced by our director, Dave Henley, and Barbara reminded us that we received

the Golden Clara award for that movie! Mary recalled Chris Dickinson’s gritty investigative

documentaries, such as “The Secret World of Iris Judge’s Training”. I couldn’t refrain from mentioning

our animation director, Elaine Fischer, who really gave Disney a run for the money with her blockbuster,

“Irises on Parade”.

Unfortunately, the contracts for these three amazing directors are up, and it’s time for new dirt! Mary

proposed that intrepid photographer, Mikey Lango, and Lynn suggested that jack of all trades, Mark

Greene who blew us away with his performance on “Iris Junkies Throwdown”. Last, but not least, we

nominated Jane Jordan, who has the ability to get the best performances out of the least likely

prospects.

And so it was decided! Our three new directors, Mikey, Mark and Jane have been added to our creative

team of Philippa, Peter and Kalpana. Officers Barbara, Lynn, Mary and I (Carol) will continue as well for

yet another year.

After the break, Mary presented the Treasurer’s Report and the books will be audited by Jane Jordan

and Peter Marra. Ever so gently, Mary reminded us that dues are due NOW!

We discussed how to best contribute to Theresa Cummins, daughter of Jim and Irene Cummins. John

Pesek made a motion to contribute directly to Charley Kearns so that Theresa would benefit from 100%

of the funds. This was seconded by Helen and Philippa.

Barbara thanked Mary for organizing the door prize iris list for the newsletter. Mary asked for a

commitment from members to grow the door prize iris. Kalpana mentioned that new members needed

instruction as to how to do this.

Iris Companion Planting

I opened an email from Schreiner’s Iris Gardens and it was just what I was looking for! The subject line – ‘Irises play

well with others’. To quote: “The emergence of long-awaited Iris blossoms in the spring can become even more

powerful when those blossoms are accompanied by an array of form and texture offered by spring and summer-

blooming perennials.

Now is the time to be planting the bulbs that will go along with your blooming irises next spring. “As you plan and

purchase bulbs for fall planting, consider their bloom season. It's great fun to coordinate late blooming tulips and

daffodils with early-blooming Iris, for example. With a bit of cross-checking, you can build yourself a non-stop wash

of bloom from early spring to early summer...With reblooming Iris, the potential is there for Iris and companion plants

blooming clear into fall!”

Susanne Holland Spicke has a good article on companion planting titled “Tall Bearded Iris and Companion Plants”.

The piece can be found on the “World of Iris” blog at http://theamericanirissociety.blogspot.com/2013/10/tall-

bearded-iris-and-companion- plants.html?utm_source=OrderCutOffReminder_090251014&utm_

campaign=CutOffDates_ 09252014&utm_medium=email.

Susanne says that “one of the most enjoyable aspects of growing tall bearded irises is the countless ways we can

use them in our gardens. Using a variety of COMPANION PLANTS for texture, shape, height and color can

enhance the beauty of a garden.”

“By using the early, mid and late blooms of the irises, there are several plants that fit into their window of bloom.”

Some of the flowers that she suggests using are allium, clematis, delphinium, Dutch iris, columbine, forsythia,

foxglove, early gladiola, lilac, lupine, monarda, pansies, peonies, poppies, early tea roses, snowball bushes, late

tulips and verbascum. These companion plants “Go well with irises and provide an eye-catching bed. The good

thing about all of these perennials and bulbs is that their growing conditions are compatible with the conditions

needed for tall bearded irises.”

Read Susanne’s ‘Tall Bearded Iris and Companion Planting Part II’ at

http://theamericanirissociety.blogspot.com/2013/12/tall-bearded-iris-and-companion-plants.html.

It is interesting reading and the article has good suggestions for a more complete garden.

2013 AIS Registrations & Introductions The 2013 Registrations and Introductions booklet is now available. Published by AIS and compiled by John Jones and Joanne Prass-Jones, the AIS Registrar-Recorders†, the 2013 booklet has 108 pages and is a valuable source of information about all irises registered and introduced during the last year, together with the names and addresses of all the hybridizers and the irises which they registered/introduced. Here’s some interesting statistics: The booklet contains registration data for 1218 irises originating in 15 countries, with 45.2% of the total originating in North America (USA 520, Canada 30). Other countries represented are: Russia (190), Czech Republic (108), Australia (90), Ukraine (84), France (60), Poland (34), Germany (29), Netherlands (28), New Zealand (14), United Kingdom (13), Italy (11), Slovak Republic (4) and Slovenia (3). AIS is slowly becoming an international organization. All irises registered by AIS are eligible for AIS Awards. Of the 1218 new registrations, 60.7% are tall bearded irises, 26.4% other bearded types, and 13.0% beardless or species or species hybrids. Total by class are as follows:

739 Tall Bearded 60.7% 171 Standard Dwarf Bearded 14.0% 79 Intermediate Bearded 6.5% 47 Spuria 3.9% 38 Japanese 3.1% 30 Border Bearded 2.1% 26 Louisiana 2.1% 23 Pacific Coast Native 1.9% 7 Miniature Dwarf Bearded 1.4% 6 Miniature Tall Bearded 1.3% 9 Species 0.7% 8 Siberian 0.7% 8 Arilbred 0.7% 7 Species Hybrid 0.6%

In addition, introduction data is included for 762 varieties including: 1 introduced in 2006, 15 introduced in 2011, 33 introduced in 2012, and 713 introduced in 2013, which were never before included in annual Registrations and Introductions publications. The 2013 Registrations and Introductions booklet is available for $13 (includes shipping and handling; make check to The American Iris Society) from the AIS Storefront, John and Kay Ludi, PO Box 956, Sandy, OR 97055. Can also be charged on VISA or Mastercard – see details at the bottom of page 51 of the Spring 2014 issue of ”Irises” or under AIS Storefront at www.irises.org. †Previous AIS Registrars were Charles E. F. Gersdorff, Robert E. Allen, Mrs. George D. Robinson and Mrs. Walter Colquitt, J. Arthur Nelson, Kathleen Kay Nelson, Keith Keppel and Anne and Mike Lowe. These folks handled over 60,000 iris registrations and introductions, first on 4x6“ cards and then, from about 1980, on computer. Thank you! R & I compilers John Jones and Joanne Prass-Jones Thank you Jane Jordan for the suggestion to print this and to Anna Cadd for submitting it to the Santa Rosa Iris Society newsletter and to Alleah Haley, the SRIS editor, for having the article ready to print. I appreciate all the help.
