He studied at Auckland University of Technology and was frst recognised when he was judged Mazda Emerging Artist of the Year in 2007. He has since picked up several more awards and has become a well-known young emerging artist in New Zealand. His works are unique in character and hard to mistake for another artist. He uses thousands of real three-dimensional objects and preserves them in paint and resin. Throughout his work, Bartleet explores ideas around how objects and materials can hold strong evidence and memories of our past much like a photograph can. He questions their use and journey once forgotten and disregarded from our daily lives. Bartleet uses these materials creating sculptures and paintings whose intensity and detail offer the viewer to study the objects individually up close or to view the surface as a whole. It can be a joyous experience recognising an old cassette player that you used as a kid but then also shocking to realise the pace in which we forget and move on from things we once treasured. You can fnd more of Alexander Bartleets work atwww.alexanderbartleet.com17th edition1.Waikato is ranked No 1*in 10 subjects; were one of NZs top universities.2.We have a large number of scholarships available at postgraduate and undergraduate level.3.We have more than 700 computers free to use, all with wireless internet access.4.Buses arrive and depart campus every 15 minutes.5.We have more than 40 exchange programmes available with topuniversities overseas.6.The majority of our bachelor degrees offer work placement opportunities get experience while you learn.7.Waikato is one of the only universities in NZ to have all of its Halls ofResidence on campus.8.Our lush campus spans 65 hectares and has world-class facilities, includingthe Rec Centre, Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts and award winning, green Student Centre.9.Located in Hamilton; home to fantastic events including Fieldays, the REV,the Great Race, Parachute Music Festival, Balloons Over Waikato, the Fuel Festival and world-class rowing, netball and rugby.10.Its an easy drive from us to Raglan, Mt Ruapehu, Rotorua, Taupo,Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty, National Park and Auckland(if you want to test traffic flows).*Based on the most recent Performance-Based Research Fund (PBRF) research assessment.things you should know aboutThe University of Waikato 10Theres no stopping youE kore e taea te aukati i a koeFor more information freephone 0800 WAIKATO or visit waikato.ac.nz3 2course snapshotsCourse Snapshotsshare Your passion maKe a real difference in teaching mitch tawhi thomasKo nga ti maniapotoMitch has recently completed his Postgraduate Diploma in teaching with the assistance of a TeachNZ scholarship. He hopes to make a difference in the areas of English and Performing Arts, and has just been appointed as Drama teacher at Tikipunga High in Whangarei.Returning to study as a mature student has been one of the best things I have ever done. It has taken a lot of courage and focus, and every step of the way I have been able to draw on my life experiences and skill base to get me through.Mitch spent his childhood in Taranaki, went to college in the Hutt Valley and graduated as a professionally trained Actor from Toi Whakaari NZ Drama School. As an award winning playwright, he has enjoyed the experience, and ups and downs, of being a practitioner within local theatre, and the flm and television industries. You could say Im a late bloomer as it took me a lot longer than I thought to complete my Bachelor of Arts from Victoria University. Now that I have, Im determined to follow my vision to teach, and to help the future storytellers of Aotearoa come through.Im inspired to teach because I realise that the very future of our arts industry, and indeed our country, depends on the confdence and skill base of our youth. I was encouraged to explore and expand my talents and to think critically and now, more than ever, I feel we need to be encouraging our rangatahi to be doing just that. Our world climate demands it. The Postgraduate Diploma in teaching is a very intense but rewarding year, and the last thing you should be worried about is how you are going to pay your bills. There are lots of costs involved with study that you may not realise at frst: transport, work clothes, textbooks and notes, printing, etc. These things add up so basically get organised, understand your fnances, relax, and focus on your study.Applying for a TeachNZ scholarship was really straightforward and, as a successful applicant, it has afforded me the ability to stay on top of everything. It is such a busy year that you may not be able to work part-time, so if you are eligible for a scholarship, I recommend going for it! It is so worth it. I started mucking around in 5th form and then when I got to 6th form I dropped out, because it wasnt something I was into. One year later I paid for a whole year of another course and only went to classes for two weeks and then that was it. So I stuck to working until I got this opportunity at Air New Zealand Aviation Institute.I was motivated right through from day one to week 17 and if I could pay to do this course again I would gladly do it.This course has changed my whole perspective towards learning. I always thought I didnt have it in me, but I guess I was wrong and I have learnt a lot from this course. A lot of people doubted me when I said I am going to do a course, but I didnt care because I had my best interests at heart. Thanks to all the facilitators for everything and the fun times we had.Customer Service Assistant for Pictorial Publications LtdSee Air New Zealand Aviation Institute, page 47ctc aviation training Jetstar pilot programme graduate, sam ButlerSam Butler, aged 26, is living the dream as a First Offcer with Jetstar after completing a pilot training programme with CTC.Sam graduated from the Jetstar Pilot Programme with CTC Aviation Training in 2010 and is loving life as an airline pilot. The view from the fight deck is incredible and different every day! The best part of my job is the rush you get from taking off or landing in challenging conditions; also the opportunity to travel and have new experiences is amazing.Sam has always had an interest in aviation and is still fascinated by the idea of fight. Having moved to Hamilton from Whakatane after fnishing high school, Sam leaped at the chance to fulfl his dream of becoming a pilot through training with CTC. I have wanted to be a pilot for as long as I can remember. The training was intensive but very enjoyable, as each day you are learning and practising new skills. CTCs training centre runs as much like an airline operation as possible, so it really does prepare you for life as an airline pilot.Anyone who has a passion for fying or an interest in aviation would love this job. Someone who gets satisfaction from problem-solving and is a hands-on person that doesnt want to sit in an offce all day.I am where I am today because I had a goal and I was lucky enough to have the opportunity with CTC to achieve it.The Jetstar Pilot Programme takes cadets with very little experience to fying in the right-hand seat of an airliner in approximately 18 months.See CTC Aviation Training (NZ), page 527 6Careers/Industry Training OrganisationsAn electrotechnology apprenticeship can take you anywhere.
