Police Response to Juvenile Offenders in Family Violence Cases

In 2011, the definition of a "family violence" crime was amended to specifically exclude "delinquent acts," which are basically crimes committed by persons under the age of eight-een. Since it is a family violence crime that triggers the man-dates, the mandates do not apply when the offender is under the age of eighteen. This poses a challenge to law enforcement when investigating these situations. At this training, participants will learn: Which mandates do not apply to offenders under the age of

eighteen Confidentiality laws involving juvenile offenders Options for law enforcement when responding to a juvenile

domestic violence case Statutory requirements when interviewing an offender un-

der the age of eighteen The challenges of handling these cases in juvenile court Presenter: Francis Carino, Supervisory Asst. State's Attorney Office of the Chief State's Attorney

This training is only open to law enforcement professionals.
