Contemporary Cryptography – Fundamentals and Applications

Cryptography is a core security technology with manyapplications in communications and information sys-tems, electronic commerce and e-government in theemerging information society. Today every IT-professionalneeds basic knowledge in cryptography. This seminarprovides an in-depth coverage of cryptography from aconceptual and application-oriented point of view. Atthe same time, the mathematical algorithmic and proto-col aspects are explained without necessarily requiring adeep background in mathematics.

Introduction and Overview The seminar starts with a general introduction to crypto-logy. Different notions of security are introduced andvarious classes of cryptographic systems (cryptosystems)are overviewed, discussed and put into perspective on ahigh level of abstraction. This module prepares thegrounds for the rest of the course.

Secret Key CryptographyThis module elaborates on secret key cryptography, i.e.,cryptosystems that employ secret parameters that areshared among the parties involved. More specifically, itaddresses symmetric encryption systems, such as theData Encryption Standard (DES), the Advanced Encryp-tion Standard (AES), and the stream cipher RC4, mes-sage authentication systems, such as the HMAC con-struction, random and pseudorandom bit generators, aswell as random and pseudorandom functions.

Public Key CryptographyThis module elaborates on public key cryptography, i.e.,cryptosystems that employ secret parameters that are

not shared among the parties involved. More specifically,it addresses one-way functions, asymmetric encryptionsystems, such as RSA, ElGamal, cryptographic hash func-tions, such as MD5 and SHA-1 and digital signature sys-tems. The module also elaborates on the fundamentalsand basic principles of elliptic curve cryptography (ECC).

Crypto Security ArchitectureThis module presents in particular the Crypto SecurityPhilosophy and Architecture. It helps participants tounderstand on how cryptography is being used in differ-ent security solutions.

Key Management and Applications This module elaborates on key management (i.e., keydistribution and key establishment), public key infra-structure (PKI), quantum cryptography, and cryptograph-ic applications. Such applications include entity authenti-cation and secure multi-party computation, as well asmore timely applications, such as Internet banking, e-government Internet voting and electronic paymentsystems.

Participants will receive introduction on all relevant topics withregard to a holistic approach to Contemporary Cryptography.
