2012 Distinguished Community TrusteeAward Recipient

MARGE POTTERMarge Potter has repeatedly demonstrated a relentless commitment to act as a “connector” between people, organizations and the community throughout her extensive career in state and local government. In seeking innovative solutions and collaboration to achieve regional impact through business and public policy activities, she has embodied the four pillars of the Distinguished Community Trusteeship (DCT) award: Diversity, Systems Thinking, Community Connections and Leadership Skills.

Marge has demonstrated her passion for Michigan’s two leading cities, Grand Rapids and Detroit, and she continues to lead by example in her role as Executive Director of Corporate Affairs for The Continental Rail Gateway where she actively works to elevate Michigan’s international transportation importance. In addition to her past work with the Michigan Department of Commerce and as economic development advisor to De-troit, Marge served 10 years on the Kent County Board of Commissioners, including two as its first female chair.

Marge serves the community as a member of several committees and boards—including the Grand Rapids Public Schools (GRPS) advisory com-mittee for the Centers of Innovation, and board positions at the Progres-sive Women’s Alliance, Muskegon Museum of Art, and One Kent Coalition. She remains an active supporter of the Girls Choral Academy, Spectrum Hospital Foundation, and Grand Valley State University (GVSU) Foundation. She and her husband recently endowed an annual GVSU scholarship for a GRPS graduate.

Her honors include the ATHENA Award (2008), The 50 Most Influential Women in West Michigan (2010) by the Grand Rapids Business Journal, Women of Achievement and Courage (2010) by the Michigan Women’s Foundation. Marge still finds spare time to enjoy life as an avid gardener, reader, traveler, cook and environmental activist.

2012 Uncommon GreatnessAward Recipient

The Potter’s House, a local Christian charter school, is a vibrant illustra-tion of truly inclusive and high-quality education that is setting the bar for “uncommon greatness” in our community. A place where the values of community, leadership, and diversity are well understood and practiced daily, The Potter’s House has been able to achieve academic excellence, support low-income families and students, and create life-changing attitudes in one of the city’s least-served neighborhoods.

Since 1981, The Potter’s House has specifically focused on meeting the academic, emotional, and spiritual needs of the children in the Roosevelt Park neighborhood on the southwest side of Grand Rapids – an area where many families live in poverty, single-parent homes are common place, and the local public school once ranked third lowest in the state.

Today, the school touts a graduation rate of 95% in a district that sees other area schools reaching only 50%. It currently serves 500 students from 20 different nationalities and reports 60% of its student body coming from low-income families. Yet, 90% of The Potter’s House graduates go on to college, and families continue to meet the school’s high expectation for parental involvement and community service. Clearly, the school motto – “Through these doors walk students of Truth, Honor & Excellence” – is taken seriously.

Moving forward, The Potter’s House continues to promote unity and rec-onciliation in the Roosevelt Park community, keeping its Pre-K through 8th grade campus in the neighborhood and actively participating in local events.

Pete Brand, LGR 2011Mindscape

Franco Silva, LA 2011Amway

Pete is a true “leader’s leader” – fostering leadership and grassroots engagement as the key to building strong, vibrant communities. Pete has personally mentored over 30 students, entrepreneurs or start-up executives, is ac-tively working on local collaboration initiatives between

A graduate of Leadership Grand Rapids 2011 and Leadership Advantage 2012, Pete was honored with the 2011 American Diabetes Association of West Michigan “Father of the Year Award.”

Franco is passionate about making an impact one project at a time and is enthusiastic about connecting people in the community for better engagement. As the initiator and leader of a grassroots group, called GRoup, Franco works in cross-company and cross-functional ways with a diverse mix of professionals to generate solutions to

issues facing our community, organizations, and ourselves. His ability to in-fluence a team, deliver results, and continually challenge those around him as he builds long-lasting relationships makes him a valuable asset to the Grand Rapids community. He is a proud graduate of Leadership Advantage 2011 and serves on the Board of the Hispanic Center of West Michigan.

The history of the Center for Community Leadership addressing leadership needs in the Grand Rapids community stretches back 27 years. Since 1986,

this vital program of the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce has been committed to enhancing and connecting leaders with a mission to serve

the community.

Through our variety of programs, we empower participants with a comprehensive understanding of our community, introduce them to key

leaders, and spotlight the key challenges and opportunities facing Grand Rapids.

Each year, more than 150 volunteers serve on the committees that develop our programming, strengthen our presence in the community, and chart the

future of the organization. Without their support, CCL could not exist.

A sincere thanks to the many alumni and community partners who support our efforts to “Create Great.”
