Surf and weather report Well, all I can say is winter did hit our little club gathering with

a vengeance for our August event at Magenta. Overcast and

decidedly cool (!#^*@?%) cold according to one overheard

comment), no doubt brought about by a nippy little westerly

breeze that hung about for most of the morning and a reported

water temperature that must have been (again overheard) about

15 (!#^*@?%) degrees!

But hey, behind every cloud there always is a silver lining, and

that cool westerly at least kept a fluky, but occasionally interesting

one metre plus swell pretty clean for most of the event.

Set-upAfter a short’ish walk, we were on on the sand-hill overlooking

the beach right in the path of that nippy little westerly but with

a great view of proceedings. With the sun struggling to make an

appearance, and the cold water, there was much agonising over

whether to stay in wetties or get into something warm between

heats. The wettie option was a bit of a worry due to the risk of

hypothermia setting in leading to an even greater risk of rigor-

mortis!! (I’m sure we don’t have insurance for that!)

Comp

The few hardy competitors had two banks to choose from with

reasonably consistent lefts and rights. The rights were quick

and holding up for longer rides and the lefts a bit more chilled

out (literally) on the take-off and filling up quicker into a

fairly deep gutter across the front, ending in an exciting little

shore-break waiting to catch the unwary. “Hey, Ronnie how’s

that shory coming in!” Wayno, overheard, still trying to get

the sand out of his teeth and wettie!

Nonetheless there was, as usual, some excellent

demonstrations of the ancient art of surfcraft riding from

some almost equally ancient surfcraft riders. Just as an

afterthought of course the younger brigade also managed

to acquit themselves tolerably well.

Happenings

Good to see Clive back after being AWOL for a time (don’t worry

Clive we don’t have court-martials here!) And Dave also back

having pretty much recovered from his foot appendage issues.

My apologies must go to Greg as I missed him in the last

newsletter with sick list roll call. Greg’s right shoulder has been

giving him a great deal of grief for some time now and he

finally bit the bullet and had a reconstruction done to rectify

the situation. We all hope the recovery is swift and positive.

Marsh and Greg, both obviously being smarter than your

average surfer (J.O. not included in this group of course) both

managed novel ideas to escape the Arctic like conditions.

Greg, with his (slinged) arm spent a good deal of the day with

a judging sheet and pen happily ensconced below the sand

dunes and out of the bitter wind that bit through all and

sundry on top of the hill. Marsh on the other hand is now

the official club mascot after deciding that his board bag was

the sun struggling to makean appearance, and thecold water, there wasmuch agonising overwhether to stay in wettiesor get into somethingwarm between heats

the ideal thermal recovery unit. Not sure what he really looked

like except that someone suggested he bore a slight

resemblance to a certain piece of equipment used regularly

as a birth control device!!

It was also a pleasant surprise to see Wak (Wayne Dafter for our

recent member’s info) our old club stalwart from a few year’s

back make a brief appearance to say g’day to a few old

mates, accompanied by another well-known local in

the guise of Wardy.

A small, but decidedly dedicated, crew of around thirteen plus

the ever reliable and hardworking Leanne and J.O’s Grandson

Lachie made up the “sandhill mob” and managed to stick it

out for three heats and finals plus an eight foot and old mal

event that managed to get us back to the car park in, I think,

record time.

What a welcome sight the BBQ was once underway as most of

the crew did take some time to thaw out. Once the fingers were

back in working order all and sundry made short work of

“Phil’s Outstanding Smorgasbord” with, I think, the BBQ plate

emptied again in record time.

And Lachie? He was stoked in his first CCMB club day,

although a bit cool to surf without a wettie (left at home!)

Very pleased with his raffle prize and went home and really

rubbed it into his two younger brothers. And I’m sure he

managed three burgers and two drinks, where does it go?

Extra stuff...

Politics is perhaps the only profession for which no preparation or

formal training is thought necessary. (We really do need to think

about that one!!)

And these two pearls of wisdom.

Accept that some days you’re the pigeon, and some days you’re the

statue!

Never put both feet in your mouth at one time, because then you

won’t have a leg to stand on.

Due to the lack of banks at the lakes, thesmall but dedicated crew decided to headsouth in search of something morepromising, and we didn’t need to go toofar finding a nice little spot at Magenta.

There was a slight offshore wind calming the face of the three

to four foot of swell with the only negative being it was coming

straight off the snowfields.

After losing some of the crew around the fourth tee, it didn't

take long to get set up. With the first heat in the water the

waves were a bit slow, so after some quick discussion the heats

were extended to 30 minutes. No big deal I hear you mutter,

but this meant having to open the box of broken dreams, yep

that’s right, who was going to tackle the Wiley timer. You could

see the blood drain from everyone’s faces as all eyes went to the

sand, this was a shoot out of OK Corral standards and we all

know the history of the timer. Armed with only a screwdriver

from Clive’s armory, Geoff stalked the beast, pounced from the

side and reset the timer, now all we needed to do was wait, and

yes 30 minutes later the siren went. Today we tamed the savage

beast, and didn’t need to make the 500m trek to get the flags.

The standard of surfing on the day was great to see, with the

odd tube ride and close out re entry, this made the judging

quite hard at times, due to the close performances. With master

chef Phil back on board and his trusty apprentice Stuart,

a magnificent BBQ feast was cooked, warming our frozen

limbs. Raffle drawn, Gumby passed on to a very appreciative

Dave Ryan and home in time for the Sunday footy, another

great club day!

By the way the CCMB crescent head-trip has been booked,

so bring your money to the next comp, first eight people get

a cabin, the rest are cool to camp next to us! (Date 17/18 October)

$70pp for the cabin, less for a tent.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those

involved with the Magoo this year; we topped the $34,000

mark – excellent work! Club shirts are under way and should be

here in time for our next comp at Avoca! There are a couple

of outstanding memberships due so please pay now.
