Wrapping Up The 2008 SeasonThe Duke baseball team put together one of the most successful seasons in school history in 2008 after fi nishing with a 37-18-1 overall record and a 10-18-1 mark in ACC play. The 37 victories marked the third most wins in school history and the most since 1998 when Duke fi nished 38-20. Duke’s success was built on a sound defense that led the nation in fi elding per-centage and a pitching staff that ranked sixth in the country with a 3.71 ERA and held opposing teams to a .257 average. The Blue Devils committed the fewest errors in the ACC with just 47 on the season.

Duke Reaches 30 Wins For Eighth TimeThe 2008 Blue Devils became the fi rst team in the program’s last decade to reach 30 wins in a season and the eighth team to accomplish the feat in program history. Duke just missed the 30-win mark in 2007 after fi nishing 29-25. Head Coach Sean McNally became the fi rst coach in school history to reach the 30-win mark by his third season.

Duke Leads Nation In Fielding PercentageDuke led the nation in fi elding percentage with a cu-mulative fi elding clip of .978, which was the highest in school history. The Blue Devils made just 47 errors in 2,117 chances for the fewest in the ACC.

Academic All-DistrictJunior fi rst baseman Nate Freiman and catcher Matt Williams were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III team, with Freiman earning a spot on the fi rst team and Williams appearing on the second team. The Academic All-District selection was the second such honor of Freiman’s career and a fi rst for Williams.

All-ACCSophomore outfi elder and closer Alex Hassan earned a spot on the All-ACC second team as a utility player in 2008 after leading Duke with 77 hits, 17 doubles, 62 runs and 106 total bases at the plate in addition to picking up fi ve saves, a 5-0 record and a 1.30 ERA on the mound. Hassan batted .353 and went errorless in 148 chances in the fi eld.

Rawlings Gold GloveSophomore center fi elder Alex Hassan put together a perfect 1.000 fi elding percentage in 2008 and was rewarded with a Rawlings Gold Glove. The award is given to only nine players in all of Division I, including just three outfi elders. Hassan became the fi rst Blue Devil in school history to earn the award. He was one of two players in the ACC to receive the honor along with Florida State catcher Buster Posey.

Out Of Your LeagueThe Blue Devils put together a perfect 27-0 non-conference record in 2008, marking the fi rst time in program history that Duke went undefeated outside of the conference. Duke batted .342 in non-conference play to defeat all 13 opponents. The Blue Devils also outscored the opposition 254-72 thanks to a pitching staff that put together a combined ERA of 2.13.

National Pitcher Of The WeekChristopher Manno was selected as the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association’s Pro-Line Cap National Pitcher of the Week after fanning 16 batters over 7.2 scoreless innings in two starts dur-ing the week of April 13-20. Twelve of the punchouts came in 5.2 scoreless innings of work in his ACC de-but against Clemson, while the other four came in a combined no-hitter against N.C. Central.

On The ClockJunior Nate Freiman was taken in the 28th round of the 2008 MLB Draft by the Texas Rangers. A 6-8, 250 pound fi rst baseman and native of Wellesley, Mass., Freiman led Duke with a .381 batting average, 11 home runs, 46 RBI and a .671 slugging percentage in his junior season. He opted to return to Duke to com-plete his degree this year. Also selected in the 2008 draft were a pair of freshmen on this year’s team, in-cluding Eric Pfi sterer (15th Rd, Cincinnati Reds) and Brian Litwin (24th Rd, Pittsburgh Pirates).

ACC Player Of The WeekTwo Blue Devils earned ACC Player of the Week hon-ors in 2008, including two-way outfi elder Alex Hassan and left-handed pitcher Christopher Manno. Manno collected the honor on April 15 after his performance against Clemson and N.C. Central, while Hassan picked up the award on March 17 after batting .500 through fi ve games while also picking up three saves on the mound. Manno received National Pitcher of the Week honors while Hassan earned a Regional award.
