Mark These Dates100 Years Ago …July 1913 Notable EventsThe world is vastly different today than it was just 10 years ago.
The advent of social media has changed the way we live our lives. But as much as the world has evolved since 2003, those changes pale in comparison to the changes made since July of 1913. The following are some of the more notable events that occurred 100 years ago this month.
11 of July: Surviving Civil War veterans from both sides gather in Pennsylvania to commemorate the fiftieth an-
niversary of the Battle of Gettysburg.
14 of July: American Maurice McLoughlin fails in his bid to become the first foreigner to win the Wimbledon finals,
losing in straight sets to Tony Wilding.
17 of July: Gregorio Cortez, a Mexican-American outlaw and folk hero, is freed from the Texas State Penitentiary
following a governmental pardon.
14 th of July: With the help of the President and Congres-sional leaders, management and labor settle their differ-
ences to avoid a nationwide strike of railroad employees.
21 of July: Nellie Hall, a British advocate for women’s suf-frage, throws a brick through the window of Prime Minis-
ter Herbert Asquith’s automobile, in which he is being chauffered on a visit to Birmingham.
23 of July: “Buffalo Bill” Cody sells the assets of his Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show, which had been in operation for
30 years.
28 of July: The sensational trial of Jewish factory manager Leo Frank, accused of murdering factory worker Mary
Phagan, begins in Atlanta.

At an earlier time in the history of Coweta County, downtown Newnan was the center of commerce – the hub of activity. We actually called it “up town”,
as downtown was reserved for places like New York or Atlan-ta. So, within about a two block area of the court house, one could buy a car, go bowling, see a movie, eat, buy medicine or clothing or hardware, cash a check, catch a Greyhound bus out of town, or spend the night in our county jail. It’s still a nice area, although in a different way, and I hope it will re-main healthy for many more years.
One of my more vivid memories of the “square” is of Al-exander’s Barber Shop located on the south of, and facing, the courthouse. My father would take me there when we both
needed a haircut and I would go back, on and off, through my teenage years. There were three huge (to me) metal and leather chairs that would swivel, recline or go up and down. Two of those chairs were reserved for owners Robert Alexander and his father. The third was for an additional employee. This was not a beauty parlor and they didn’t offer to design or style your hair, and they didn’t take appointments. Men walked in, sat down, and discussed fishing or hunting or politics while waiting for their regular barber. Their menu include a shave, haircut, your favorite hair tonic, and a shoeshine. And they would sometimes give you that special, ten-second massage of your shoulders and neck with a vibrating machine attached to the top of their hand. You probably couldn’t have spent more than two or three dollars for the whole shebang! All cuts were about the same – little or no hair around the ears and a little bit longer on top. There were three large ceiling fans to condition the space, a framed print of dogs playing poker, and a very ornate metal cash register on a stand. But it was that curtain at the rear of this small shop which surely led to some dark, unknown place that fueled my 5 year old imagination. What could be back there, and why would the barbers sometimes go in and quickly close the curtain behind them? Perhaps there was a dead body or two, or a robber hiding in wait. I was too afraid to ask!
Things are different now, and that’s OK. Folks don’t really need to “go up town” to do their shopping. The bowling alley is gone and so is the bus station. But thanks to Main Street Newnan, the square area is once again a popular destination, although for different reasons. The big box stores and strip malls are much needed, but I hope we can continue to preserve the architecture and culture that once made Newnan’s court square the hub of commerce for Coweta County.
JoePost Script: As adults, we have a different perspective of earlier events. For over 25 years I was a neighbor of Robert Alexander and saw him walking almost every day. He was the hus-band of the talented artist, Harriet Alexander who we fondly remember. And after 60 years, I have solved the mystery of “The curtain”. It separated a room which contained a bathroom, mop bucket and broom, and a couple of storage shelves. No bank robbers. No dead bodies. I sure hope I will never have to allow my age to retard my vivid imagination.

Another sub-system that makes your ve-hicle a pleasure to drive is the power steering system and it, too, like most of the others we have discussed is based on a special purpose, high pressure uid. Like the others, it is also pre y easy to understand and check. So, let’s go.
How many of you remember cars with-out power steering, or when it was an extra cost luxury option? at was many years ago and there probably isn’t a car available today that does not have it as a standard feature, even the lightest smallest and most inexpen-sive sub-compact. e system is basically a pump that is powered from the car’s fan belt that builds pressure in a closed system to add mechanical advantage to the steering e ort. Since most cars now-a-days are front wheel drive, there is considerably more weight on the front (steering) wheels making them harder to turn. us power steering assis-tance is really a necessity. e latest technol-ogy, so far found on mostly the very expen-sive models is electric power steering, which does not sap the engine for power to run the pump. But it does make the condition of the ba ery that much more critical. Aren’t you glad you understand how to check your bat-tery?
e most frequent problem with power steering is a leak in a line or connection, since everything is under considerable pressure. Occasionally the pump itself will fail. If the system loses uid over a short period of time, you will be able to tell because the car gets increasingly more di cult to steer. A cata-strophic failure usually results in a big pool of ruby red uid under the front of the car, thick red goop all over the place, and even a red lm on the windshield, and, oh yeah, ab-solutely no steering assistance. Many times a failure will be forewarned by a screeching noise from the pump.
All you need to learn to do is to inspect the system during your periodic mainte-nance sessions. Use your Owner’s Manual to locate the power steering uid reservoir and the power steering pump. Trace them around the engine compartment and you will have found all the components that could leak. A small leak from a cracked hard line or a bri le rubber hose will spray a ne mist when the engine is running and most likely not leak when it is turned o . e mist will land on some part of the engine compartment and a ract dust, dirt, and grit.
CAR CARE ESSENTIALS
Check Your Car’s Power Steering Fluid …
is is the sign of a small leak. Many times it will still be red if it is recent. e reservoir that holds the power steering uid is usually clear or translucent plastic, marked with a yellow cap identifying it. ere are also lines molded into the plastic that show the maxi-mum and minimum levels for the uid. All you need is a rag to wipe that red grit o the reservoir so you can read the level between the min and max lines or open the unpres-surized system and look at the level of the uid. Rather than buy the speci c type that your Owner’s Manual recommends from the many that line the shelves of the parts stores, it is usually just easier to take your car to your mechanic and tell him to ll, x, or replace the faulty part(s) of the system.
One reason you want to be on top of the situation is that if you are driving along and have a catastrophic power steering system failure, you have steering that is now more di cult to use than even a non-power sys-tem would be. Try turning the steering wheel with the engine o and you’ll get a good idea. If you lose some or all of your power assist, you might not be able to turn the wheel and steer the car to a safe location. You certainly won’t be able to drive it any distance or with any precision. A cha er coming from the vi-cinity of the pump or a squeal from the same area are sure signs of an already failed or an about to fail power steering pump. So, a li le knowledge and a ention, mixed with a pre y strong incentive to avoid a catastrophic situ-ation, should give you enough motivation to keep your system properly lled and work-ing as designed.

KEEPING WEIGHT OFF ONCE IT’S GONELosing weight can be a life-changing event. For some men and women, the desire to lose weight
is largely cosmetic, while others must lose weight for medical reasons. Regardless of the reason behind a person’s desire to lose weight, sett ing and achieving such a goal is an accomplishment to be proud of.
As diffi cult as losing weight can be, men and women oft en fi nd it even more diffi cult to keep that weight off once it’s gone. But maintaining a healthy weight does not have to be so diffi cult, especially when people can apply the same eff ort and discipline to keeping weight off that they did to losing weight. Th e following are a few additional tips to help men and women maintain a healthy weight.
Exercise daily• . Exercise plays a signifi cant role in many peo-ple’s weight-loss eff orts, and men and women should con-tinue to emphasize exercise as they work to maintain their weight loss. An exercise regimen that helped you lose weight can be just as eff ective as you work to keep that weight off . Aerobic and strength-training exercise can help men and women maintain a healthy weight while reducing their risk for various diseases, including heart disease. Strength train-ing exercise can be especially important for men and women as they age, as such exercise helps maintain bone health and reduce the risk of osteoporosis.
Continue to monitor eating habits.• Once the weight has been lost, that does not mean you can return to your pre-weight loss diet. Aft er those excess pounds have disappeared, con-tinue to watch what you eat, avoiding foods that are high in fat and sugar. In addition, con-

tinue to control your food portions to avoid overindulging. Portion control can go a long way toward helping men and women keep weight off , and how much you eat should be considered nearly as important as what you’re eating.
Enlist the help of others.• Many people enlist the help of family and friends as they att empt to lose weight. Immediate family members, in particular, tend to play a signifi cant role in such eff orts, acting as a daily support system and even, on occasion, serving as the “food police” when men and women veer off course of their healthy diets. Such support can be just as valuable as you work to maintain your weight loss. If you worked out on the buddy system on your way to losing weight, continue to do so. If your family adopted a healthy diet to help make things easier on you during your weight-loss eff orts, con-tinue to eat such healthy foods as a family, which can only pay dividends for everyone in the long run.
Expect some setbacks• , but don’t accept them. Just like there were setbacks on your road to losing weight, there will be setbacks as you try to maintain that weight loss. Such setbacks are to be expected, but they’re much easier to accept when you’re already at a healthy weight than they were when you were overweight. But when you accept setbacks and don’t work to avoid more, all that hard work losing weight could end up being for naught. Don’t beat yourself up if you gain some of the weight back, but if you do, assess how it happened and work to address any issues that might have led to that weight gain.

I created this delectable pie for my daughter-in-law, Pam, just in time for her birthday. She says it’s soooooo good that she’ll gladly
let me share the recipe.
2 cups (2 medium) sliced bananas1 (6-ounce) purchased graham cracker pie crust2 tablespoon toffee bits1 (4-serving) package sugar-free instant banana-cream pudding mix2/3 cup nonfat dry milk powder1 1/3 cups water1 cup reduced-calorie whipped topping2 tablespoons purchased graham cracker crumbs
1Layer banana slices in pie crust. Evenly sprinkle 1 tablespoon toffee bits over top.
2In a large bowl, combine dry pudding mix, dry milk powder and water. Mix well, using a wire whisk. Blend in 1/4 cup
whipped topping. Spread mixture evenly over bananas. Refriger-ate 5 minutes.
3Evenly spread remaining 3/4 cup whipped topping over set filling. Sprinkle graham cracker crumbs and remaining 1 ta-
blespoon toffee bits over top. Refrigerate at least 1 hour. Makes 8 servings.

Iglesia de Dios Puerta al Cielo has been serving the Hispanic community in Newnan, GA, teaching God’s word since 2001. We are one of only 2 hosts for One Harvest Food Ministries in Coweta County; we have adopted Sprayberry Road as part of Keep Newnan Beautiful as well as belonging to various organi-zations in our community, such as Prevent Child Abuse Coweta and Community Welcome House. We not only minister to the Hispanic community but try to do our part in the community as a whole. Our
Church mortgage will not be renewed this Sep-tember 2013, as the bank holding the mort-gage is asking us to fi nance through another bank or pay off the remaining balance. Our tithes and offerings income does not allow us to refi nance with another lender. We are in prayer and trusting God for 1000 donors at $400.00 to totally eliminate this debt. You probably do not have $400 to give, however
we just ask that you prayerfully consider ral-lying with us in this effort. Any donation will be greatly appreciated and you will be truly blessed
by our God whose Blessings fl ow daily. Spread the word for us on Facebook and via email to all your friends and acquaintances and most of all PRAY! September will be here before you know it. We need your help so that the min-istry God has put in our care can go on and retain the 3 acres and 2 buildings which is currently Puerta al Cielo’s church property. Your gift is tax deductable, we are a non- profi t 501-C3.

When e Coweta Shopper and mvpsportsandmore decided to join forces and add a sports page to e Coweta Shopper, it was, and still is in-tended to cover local sporting events with hi-lites plus to pro le some of the people in the area who have made an impact with their contributions both on and o the playing surface. I can think of no be er place or person to start with than Senoia’s own Keith Brooking. Brooking came up through the Eastern half of the Coweta school system, EC middle and then on to EC high where he was a true stand-out on the football eld. A er 4 years at EC, he was signed to a 4 year full ride to play for Geor-gia Tech which he did and then things started to happen for this young man. In 1998 the Atlanta Falcons saw t to make him their 1st pick in the NFL dra (the 1st round and 12th pick in the over-all dra for that year) where he would spend the next 11 years. A few items worth mentioning would be the fact that in his rookie year he saw playing time in the Super-Bowl (then head coach Dan Reaves) and made it to the Pro-Bowl 5 times as a Falcon. A er his 11 year ten-ure with the Birds, the Dallas Cowboys hired him for a 3 year deal to head up their line-backer core. A er 3 years in Dallas Brooking was almost ready to retire but the Denver Broncos had brought in Peyton Manning in hopes of winning the Super-bowl that year and they gave a call to Keith and for 1 year he was a Bronco. All the accolades from his playing days are not what make him so spe-
cial to myself and the members of his community, what he gave back and the fact that he came back when he could working various charity events etc. (too numerous to mention) His contribu-tion to his high school alma mata and the head coach he played for (Danny Cronic) was immeasurable, For several years with the help of the local folks, the Atlanta media and his team mates from the Falcons organization he worked the Keith Brooking Invitational Golf Tour-nament at the Orchard Hills golf course in Coweta County, Georgia. Over the several years which the tournament was held, it produced (for the East Coweta football program) over $270,000. is is a lot of money and without the for-mer EC star it could not have happened. I am running out of time here and this is a 3 part segment so look for it to con-tinue over the next several weeks.

“Something old, Some new,
Something Blue”Demotoi, Lanarth, Mariesii ~ is that French? Yes, it surely is ~ French Hydrangea that is. Hydran-
gea is one of our most beloved old Southern summer shrubs. These deciduous shrubs are kin in the Hydrangeaceae family. There are many types of hydrangeas. Here are a few: “Annabelle” - H. arbore-scens is a very hardy selection with white blooms turning pale green later. French hy-drangea ~ H. macrophylla has countless selections including “Nikko Blue” which has con-sistently reliable blue blooms. Other French or Bigleaf hy-drangeas bloom white, pink, purple, or red. Some types can
be encouraged to blue color by adding aluminum sulfate or pink color by adding lime to the soil. It is the soil pH (acid or alkaline) that determines the color of those types. “Snowflake” - H. querci-folia, or Oakleaf Hydrangea, has white blooms that turn pinkish in the Fall. Its leaves turn a handsome bronze and reddish color in Fall. “Tardiva” - H. paniculata - also known as the Pee Gee hydran-gea - blooms later and is a good doer. Now there are numerous new choices - such as “Endless Summer” - that are repeat bloom-ers. They bloom on old and new wood.
Hydrangeas are easy care choices for the garden or in large containers. They prefer good, well-drained soil and regular water along with some shade in the afternoon.
Prune French hydrangeas by the end of July to avoid losing next year’s blooms. Hydrangea arborescens blooms on new growth, so prune in the dormant stage. The repeat blooming types can be pruned anytime.
To dry, cut hydrangeas just after they change color and begin to feel paper-like. Use water about half way up stems and allow it to evaporate (can add fabric dye).

THIS IS A HAMMERBy Samantha Mazzotta
Avoid These Common Painting Mistakes
Q: I just started do-ing some repainting
around the house, and I am finding that my first ef-forts don’t look great. The paint seems thick in some spots; old paint is still faintly visible in others, and I can see brush marks everywhere. I’m going to need to start over, I guess. Any advice on how to improve my painting skills? -- Susan in Kansas City, Mo.
A: First, I’m glad you stopped with the first room as soon as you saw the problems. That way you
can fix the mistakes there and learn enough to not repeat them in other rooms, which saves time and money. Experience will help improve many of these common painting problems. But there are some ba-sic steps to take that will minimize the issues.
Paint showing through the new coat: Put a coat • of primer between the old paint and the new when the old paint is a darker color or if it is a
different type of paint (oil-based vs. latex-based, for example).“Thick”-looking spots: These can be caused by • painting a second coat before the first one is dry, or by painting over fresh spackling that isn’t completely dry. Thick spots on the old coat of paint also will show through the new one; try to sand those down beforehand.Brush marks: Always stir the paint when you • open the can, even if the paint store pre-stirred it for you. Then, make sure not to overload your brush with paint: dip only about one-third of the brush. Finally, make your brush strokes smooth and long, and lift the brush away so the paint feathers out.Uneven roller strokes: Apply paint to the roller • evenly by using a paint tray or screen. Dip one side of the roller into the paint reservoir and then roll it back and forth on the tray or screen so it spreads evenly. Also, don’t let the roller “slide” across the wall surface; it should roll freely. If it doesn’t, disassemble and clean it.Paint drips: Again, don’t overload your brush • or roller. If paint drips down the wall, finish the brush stroke and then brush the drip in the same direction that you’re painting the rest of the wall,
feathering it out. If paint drips on the floor or baseboards, wipe it up immediately with a damp cloth.Paint splatters: This happens often when using • rollers, so always start your roll by angling up-ward, and roll smoothly and evenly. Don’t hurry.
HOME TIP: To prevent varia-tion between cans of a custom-mixed color, consolidate or “box” all the custom color into a single large container, mix, and then refill the smaller cans with the mixed paint.

No-Kill MovementGaining Followers
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve read more and more reports recently of lost dogs being euthanized at shelters even before a posted “grace period” has passed -- less than three days in some cases. How can shelters justify this, and why am I seeing so much in the news about it? -- Lila in Tucson, Ariz.
DEAR LILA: Some shelters have exceptions to their grace-period rules, and those exceptions vary. It’s not a great answer for owners who worry about their dogs getting out and getting lost, and it’s tragic for owners whose pets have been euthanized at shelters with such practices.
There’s a growing movement toward promoting “no-kill” shelters, which house dogs, cats and other animals and do not routinely eutha-nize them, even if they’re unadoptable or unclaimed. You may be seeing the results of increased publicity by no-kill advocacy groups, which often function as watchdogs of the shelter industry.
Many argue that it’s often necessary to have a program to “put down” ownerless dogs and cats, due to overpopulation. No-kill advo-cates rebut that the stray population is not as high as it’s made out to be, and that alternative programs can be im-plemented to control the population without putting animals to death. For example, nonprofits like No Kill Advoca-cy Center help shelters develop feral-cat trap/neuter/release programs and develop programs like pet retention (helping owners keep their pets) and foster care.
People who are concerned about accidental (or bureaucracy-driven) euthanasia of lost pets can learn from no-kill advocacy organizations about how to take action in their communities to reduce or eliminate this tragic circumstance.
