2013 ETSU Softball

BUC NOTES

WE ARE “ETSU”The ETSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics would like to ask both the print and broadcast media to honor our request to be called “ETSU” throughout the 2013 season. East Tennessee State in first reference is acceptable, but subsequent references should be ETSU. On TV graphics, please use ETSU. Our nickname is the Buccaneers, but Bucs is also acceptable.

A-SUN LOSING STREAKETSU has lost its last 15 Atlantic Sun contests dating back to April of 2012. The Bucs lost the last four A-Sun games of the 2012 season and are 0-11 so far in 2013. ETSU and Lipcomb face off in a three-game set this weekend at Betty Basler Field.

HEARTBREAK VS. FGCUETSU came back from trailing by as many as six runs to FGCU two weekends ago, scoring six in the sixth inning capped off by a two-run home run by Jackie Baird to take a 9-8 lead. The Eagles were down to their last two outs in the seventh when Kelsey Carpenter tied it on a solo shot, and the Eagles won 10-9 in eight innings.

NOT “COWARTING” AWAYFreshman Bethany Cowart had a breakout series last weekend against Jacksonville. She earned her first collegiate hit and then her first collegiate home run in the same game. The next day she went 2-for-2 with an RBI double, ending the weekend 4-for-6 at the dish with a single, double, homer, two runs and two RBIs, reaching base in five of seven plate appearances. Against Wesetern Carolina, she added her first triple.

A FOXY STREAKRedshirt sophomore Nicole Fox ended a 13-game hitting streak against Jacksonville, standing alone as the second-longest in ETSU history. Stephanie Gaynord holds the ETSU record at 14 consecutive games from 2006-07.

COSTLY ERRORSThe Bucs have committed 46 errors in 29 games (1.6/Game) which have proved costly in quite a few outings. ETSU has surrendered a total of 152runs, 46 of which have been unearned (30 percent).

MAMBO No. 5ETSU has scored a total of 103 runs through 24 games. Its most productive inning in terms of run differential has been the fifth,, where it has scored 21 runs to account for roughly 20 percent of its season total. The Buccaneers also hold a +7 run differential in the 5th inning, outscoring opponents 21-14.

ESCAPING THE 1STThough ETSU has scored 24 runs in the first inning, it has surrendered 32 runs, the most of any in-ning this season. Opponents have scored 152 total runs on the Bucs with the 32 in the first account-ing for roughly 21 percent.

THE COMEBACK KIDS ETSU has been living by the saying, “It’s not over, until it’s over.” Twice this season, ETSU has scored five runs in the bottom half of its last at-bat to walk-off victorious, 5-4. The first instance came in the eighth inning against JMU after giving up four runs in the top half, and the latest was in the final game of the three-game set against Siena College. Against Akron, the Bucs scored in the seventh to force extras, and against the College of Charleston, ETSU scored two in the top of the seventh to win, 10-9, after giving up six runs and the lead the inning prior. In total, ETSU is outscoring its opponents 9-3 in the 7th inning and has won three games in comeback fashion.

SIENA SWEEPETSU earned a three-game sweep of Siena College (Feb. 23-24), defeating the Saints by scores of 12-5, 10-4 and 5-4. The Buccaneers exploded offensively, earning 17 hits in each of the first two games while getting eight more in game three. Senior Sam Lower homered in both games of the Saturday doublehead-er and blasted her first collegiate grand slam in game two. The Sunday sweep was full of dramatics, as ETSU used a five-run seventh inning to walk-off, 5-4.

CARPENTER BUILDING OPENING WEEKENDFreshman Sam Carpenter looks to play a vital role in the Buccaneer lineup. On opening weekend at the Plainsmen Invite, she had a multi-homer game to dirve in all four ETSU runs versus Kent State. Her multi-homer game was the 13th in ETSU history. Last Thursday at Presbyterian, she hit her third homer of the season and is tied with Sam Lower for the team lead.

ENDING THE SLIDEETSU put an end to a 12-game losing streak (dating back to the 2012 season) at the College of Charleston Classic (Feb. 15-17). ETSU walked away from the tournament 3-2, defeating Towson for its first win of the season as Sam Harrell pitched a complete-game, three-hit shutout, 6-0.

TOP RETURNING HITTERSETSU returns its top three hitters from last season in terms of batting average. At the top of the list is sophomore Casey Horner, who hit .316 a season ago with a team-high seven home runs and 24 RBIs. A close second is Tara Hart-nett, who returns from a .315 season in which she scored 11 runs and had 10 RBIs. Rounding out the top returners is Alex Everett, who hit .299 in 2012 with 13 runs and 20 RBis to rank second behind Horner.

HORNER RECOGNIZED BY A-SUNCounting down to the start of the season, the Atlantic Sun Conference took a look at some of its top returning hitters and pointed out Casey Horner. The sophomore slugger ranked 18th in the league last year with a .316 batting average.

HORNER IN THE CAREER BOOKSInfielder Casey Horner made a big splash her freshman year, hitting .316, slug-ging .537 and holding an OBP of .411. Those three numbers placed her among the top three in the ETSU career record books, as she began the season sitting second in batting average, first in slugging and first in OBP.

STEPPING UP IN THE CIRCLEWhen asked what area of the game the Bucs need to perform better in the most in order to succeed in 2013, ETSU head coach Brad Irwin said, “Without a doubt, the biggest improvement this year has to be in the circle.” Last season, the Buccaneer pitching staff combined for a 4.72 ERA, allowing opposing teams to hit an average of .312 while surrendering 145 walks. Each of those statistics rank near the program’s worst.

YOUTHFUL BUCSWith a roster consisting of seven freshmen, seven sophomores, three juniors and four seniors, the ETSU Buccaneers boast a lot of youth toward the 2013 campaign. All seven freshmen, sophomore Shaylyn Wood and junior Elliana Cabrera are newcomers to the squad and have never played softball at the Divison I level. Those nine with no D-I experience make up roughly 43 percent of the 2013 roster.

TURNING THE TIDEETSU’s record has been on the decline since the 2009 season.
