Econosto can supply control valves in the following types:

• Compact type, small in size and light in weight• Standard type, economical in price and construction• Types with exchangeable trim, flexible and robust• Three-way control valves, for mixing or diverting• Control valves for heating and ventilation (HVAC)

Depending on type, controlvalves can be divided into two application areas:

• Industrial applications• Heating and ventilation (HVAC)

It should be noted that the control valves are not shut-off valves, and have a standardised, established leak tolerance.

Globe valves have a very low leakage rate, but are not suitable for control applications.

For these control valves and globe valves there is a wide assortment of electric and pneumatic actuators available, dependingon the type.

Calculation and selectionControl valves are now indispensable to modern process technology, and fulfil a vital role in ensuring an efficient and safeoperation. For these control valves to properly do their work, it is essential to fully understand their characteristics andlimitations. Optimum functioning of a control valve in any process, in combination with the total control system, can only beexpected if it is properly selected. The following aspects are taken into consideration by Econosto when selecting controlvalves:

• Calculation of the Kvs value, taking into account the minimum, nominal and maximum process conditions• Establishment of the valve characteristics (linear, equal percentage)• Determination of the disc shape (parabolic, V- port, cage plug) in relation to cavitation, flashing, choked flow, and noise

production• Determination of the size of the valve body, taking into account the maximum allowable speed for various media• Choice of materials for disc, seat and valve body• Establishment of pressure rating and standard (DIN / ASME)• The choice of valve model, taking into account speed, expansion and erosive properties• The choice of actuation method(electric/pneumatic) and establishing the safe state for the valve should the actuation

energy fail• Establishing the manner of control by the control system (3-point, analogue or digital)• Planned / desired service interval• Determining the type of stem gland (PTFE V-rings, PTFE gland packing, graphite gland packing or SS bellows seal)

Minimum data required for new control valveFor selection of the correct controlvalve, the following details are required as a minimum:

• Medium• Medium temperature• Flowrate• Specific mass (for other media such as steam or water)• Up-stream pressure• Down-stream pressure• Connection• Two-way or three-way versions (with three-way, mix or divert)• Actuator type (pneumatic or electric)• Characteristics of the actuator (action and/or energy source)• Installation location (outdoors or indoors)• Required documentation and/or certificates• Any other options or wishes

Control valves plug shapesThe plug shapes of Econonosto control valves can be divided into two groups:- plug shapes used in two-way valves- plug shapes used in three-way valves

The choice of a specific type of plug shape for the two-way valves depends strongly on the applicable process conditions.Pressure difference, flow speed and noise play an important role in this.The parabolic plug is standard. When there is cavitation or a high noise level, the cage plug is used.There is also the possibility of using special valves such as the V-port and pressure-balanced valves.

With three-way valves, the placement of the valve within a system is what determines the disc shape. When mixing two media,a mixing valve should be used, while for diverting a medium, a diverting valve should be used.A mixing valve cannot be used as a diverting valve without consequences, considering the play of forces and flowcharacteristics mean that the closing pressure is considerable less with the same actuation force.

Control characteristicsWith the Econosto control valves we can distinguish two different control characteristics, depending on the plug type:- Linear characteristic, principally for regulating flows of liquids- Equal percentage characteristic, principally for regulating flows of gases and vapours and for regulating pressures

Stem sealsThe Econosto control valves can be ordered with four different stem seals,depending on the plug type. These can bearranged in the following order, with increasing degree of closure and temperature resistance:

1 PTFE V-rings2 PTFE gland packing3 Graphite gland packing4 SS bellows seal

PTFE V-rings are adequate for the great majority of applications, while an SS bellows seal is mainly used where the medium isvolatile or of low viscosity (e.g. heat transfer oil).A SS bellows seal also has advantages in terms of the required service interval of the control valve. Note that the SS bellowsseal takes up more room compared to the other stem seals.

Construction and actionThe pneumatic actuators convert pneumatic control signals into a linear stroke movement. The force required to return thevalve to the normal position is provided by the compression springs acting on the diaphragm disc. In the event of air supplyfailure, this spring force returns the actuator to the normal position.The use of a rolling diaphragm enables linear actuation forces to be reached over relatively large strokes. The action sense ofactuators which are already installed can be modified without additional parts, using simple tools. The compression springsand the rolling diaphragm are designed for more than 1 million double strokes.(under optimum conditions).

Bürkert air-operated controlvalves consists of a SS316L angle seat or globe body with rugged pneumatic piston actuator. Thetrim is in the form of a parabolic plug/seat system. This results in a favourable characteristic for continuous variation of theflow as a function of the parabolic plug position. With the angle seat valve this also results in a flow characteristicapproximately 35% larger than conventional control valves.

The controlvalves have standard springloaded self-adjusting PTFE V-rings for a service friendly and reliable application. Forvolatile, cryogenic, aggresive or other difficult media there are versions with stainless steel bellows seal for low emmissionapplications and/or an extended bonnet.

The controlvalves of bürkert can be actuated by the continuous topcontrol type 8630 of sidecontrol 1067 and 8635.Topcontrol/sidecontrol thus forms a mechanical and functional unit with the pneumatic actuator as a complete control valvesystem. The topcontrol/sidecontrol is standard an electronic positioner, but can be supplied to include an unique integralprocescontroller.
