Enrollment Changes due to changes in State Guidelines

The state has made it clear that it is the responsibility of each LEA to enroll all students under theage of 21 who are domiciled in the school administrative unit. The domicile of a student under 18years of age is presumed to be the domicile of his or her parents or court-ordered guardian as

Students should be enrolled in school immediately as a conditional enrollment and should not bedenied access to school while the administrative staff of the school validates documents required toregister. While we are still requiring the items listed on the OCS Checklist for StudentEnrollment/School Moves we will permit the conditional enrollment and assignment of classeswhile the documents are being presented.

A parent or legal guardian must present a proof of residence in their name or that of a friend orrelative if they are providing a notarized statement. General Statue 115C-364(c), 130A-109 doesof a students age while the parent is gathering the proper documentation.

We will now allow the parents to have thirty days to submit the required items on the OCS checklistfor enrollment. If a student has not provided the proper paperwork within the thirty days the parentreceived and all absences will be coded as unlawful.

Please share this information with those that are responsible for the enrollment process on yourcampus.

The teamwork and conversations that occurred with all the staff will lay the foundation for ayear of collaborative support across our county. We received a lot of great feedback from theteachers who enjoyed being able to collaborate with teachers from other schools. Expanding offthis excitement, we are enthusiastic about the work that we will be able to accomplish through ourprofessional development time with teachers on the Early Release Days this year.

    ESL Summer Enrichment

While most of our students were still at home enjoying the lastfew days of summer, about 50 of our ESL students were workinghard to get ready for the school year at the ESL SummerEnrichment Program. The students and staff had a great twoweeks learning together and working on literacy skills through aTravel focus. There were many hands -on activities and project-based lessons that allowed the students to experience the worldand bring in their own experiences, as well.

As with any big project, it took many people to make thisprogram a success. A huge THANK YOU to Lori Howard, DeniseGartner and the CEEM staff for hosting and supporting usthroughout the program. Also, a shout out to our amazing ESLstaff that coordinated and served as teachers: Margaret Martin,Lara Heath, Braelyn Prior, Marianne Field, Brittany Nicholsonand Jessica Golden. We also wouldnt have been successfulwithout the help of our amazing folks that work tirelessly in theTransportation and Food Services departments, especially Mrs.Lucas and Mrs. Worrell.
