NEWSLETTER Summer 2016
The 1st international scientific conference on sleep
spindling and related phenomena was prepared due
to recent advances in this specific field of study as well
as the key importance of this neural oscillatory pattern
in neurobehavioral functioning. Since sleep spindle
oscillations are at the crossroad between slow and fast
oscillations during sleep, the conference was open to
scientific results about a very broad range of neural
and behavioural phenomena.
The first conference was hosted in Budapest, a
lively and beautiful place, which vibrates at a plethora

of different frequencies, much like the oscillations we
study. The conference aimed to be the first of a series of
biennial conferences on this subject.
The 2nd International Conference on Sleep
Spindling will take place in Budapest in 2018 and now
you have a unique opportunity to have your registration
fee waived. First authors of the first three accepted
papers in the recently launched journal of Sleep
Spindles & Cortical Up States will have the possibility to
join the conference for free. (For details, see the
conference website.)

The 8th European Conference
on Behavioural Biology (ECBB)
was organized in Vienna,
Austria. With a format similar to
former ECBB conferences it
included plenary talks,
participant proposed symposia
as well as oral and poster
presentations.
The biannual ECBB conferences traditionally cover a wide range of topics in the field of behavioural biology, this was
nicely reflected in this year’s keynote speakers (Iain Couzin, MPI Ornithology; Barbara König, University of Zürich; Sonja
Koski, University of Helsinki; Friederike Range, University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna; Ben Sheldon, University of
Oxford) and the 16 selected symposia that included topics from “traditional” behavioural biology such as sexual
selection, animal personality or communication, through combining behaviour with molecular methods such as
proteomics, to the newly emerging approach of citizen science. (For details, see the conference website.)

University program (click on the picture below to see
the video):
This workshop was organized by Ildikó Király and
Dan Sperber as part of the Summer University
program at the Central European University (CEU),
Budapest from 27 June to 2 July 2016. The school
has brought together some of the key figures from a
variety of disciplines in order to illuminate further the
relationship between metarepresentation and
communication and offer students and researchers
a forum to discuss ideas at the cutting edge of this
field.

Introducing research institutes
Cognitive Research Lab
Russian Academy of National Economy and Public
Administration
The Cognitive Research Laboratory is a new research
institution formed in 2013, and based in the Institute of
Social Sciences at the Russian Academy of National
Economy and Public Administration. The team is
interested in various areas of cognitive research,
including problem solving, cognitive development,
visual attention, predictions and language.
The laboratory is headed by Prof. Vladimir F.
Spiridonov, whose research is focused on psychological
mechanisms of solving different types of problems. The
team is researching the process of solving insight puzzles
(such as nine dots or four trees problems) as well as
problems with completely differing structures, e.g. word
problems in mathematics and genetics. The goal is to
understand how the use of various solving strategies is
connected to the solver’s particular representation
types, what aspects of the representation facilitate or
impede the use of task relevant strategies.

Studies in the field of cognitive development are carried
out by Tatyana N. Kotova. Her team explores social
learning: the development of word meaning, the
mechanism of the overimitation effect, the formation of
emotional representation. They are interested in
acquisition mechanisms specific to social learning,
acquisition of norms and social conventions as well
shared knowledge and “shared action”. Another focus
of interest is concept formation and category learning
with different forms of generalization: prototypes,
examples, theories and rules. Furthermore, the team
studies linguistically modulated perception: how words
catalyze categorization and the role of signs in concept
formation.

Research of human visual attention is performed by
Maria V. Falikman. She studies how attention mediates
the formation of chunks, or processing units, in the
human visual system. To investigate into this issue, she is
studying the so-called “word superiority effect” across
the variety of visual attention tasks, requiring observers
to identify letters embedded in letter strings and
compare performance on random letter strings and
meaningful words. By revealing and comparing cases of
“word superiority” and “word inferiority”, Dr. Falikman
describes the interaction between bottom-up and top-
down processes in visual system, as well as between two
different types of top-down influences: an observer’s
previous experience and task-related activity (individual
strategies).
Our team member Andrey Chetverikov is using
priming of pop-out in visual search to research
predictions. His goal is to understand how predictions
evolve in the course of learning and what the
consequences are when they are disconfirmed. In
collaboration with Dr. Kristjánsson from University of
Iceland and Dr. Campana from University of Padova, he
studies how people respond to different statistical
distributions of features (e.g., line orientation). Their
research demonstrated that the visual system is sensitive
to properties of features distributions over and above
mean and variance.
Psycholinguistics is another research area that is
explored in our lab, specifically in the area of
bilingualism. Emilia V. Ezrina studies how bilinguals select
which language to use during production. She is also
interested in syntactic interactions of language, i.e. to
what extent languages are very flexible and permeable.
Emilia is also a Fulbright Alumni: she performed research
at The Pennsylvania State University in the United States
under the supervision of Dr. Judith Kroll.
In addition to these research projects, the
members of our lab teach several courses at the
University, including Cognitive Science, Cognitive
Development, Neuroscience, Attention, Memory and
Learning, Problem Solving and Research Methods in
Psychology.
Research carried out in our lab was presented at
several national and international conference,
including: Psychonomics, Conference of Cognitive
Science Society, Budapest CEU Conference on
Cognitive Development, Conference of Cognitive
Development Society, The Sixth International
Conference of Cognitive Science, Annual Meeting
European Society for Philosophy & Psychology,
Dubrovnik Conference on Cognitive Science, Cognitive
Science in Moscow and others.
