Welcome to the training and curriculum guide for the
home technology industry brought to you by CEDIA
(the Custom Electronic Design and Installation
Association).
At the heart of CEDIA is its commitment to education and training, and
its determination to continually raise standards in the residential custom
installation industry.
CEDIA education offers a structured curriculum delivered by
experienced industry experts. Our certification programme is recognised
throughout the industry to promote to consumers that companies with
CEDIA certified employees offer uncompromising quality and expertise.
Furthermore, CEDIA now introduces the ECS (Electrotechnical
Certification Scheme) card which allows EST2 certified individuals to
prove competency on any construction site.
We have a dedicated training centre at our UK
headquarters in St. Neots, Cambridgeshire, which is
centrally located between Cambridge and Bedford. This
facility enables the Association to offer regular training
courses. Whether you are new to the industry or simply
looking to further your knowledge in a speciality area,

The CEDIA global team is introducing a new
‘Gateway’ certification this summer. A formal
CEDIA qualification, the Gateway program covers
the complete cross section of our industry, from
technical installation to design to business skills in
one certification. Ideal for those within a sales /
project management role, or those wishing to
start up their own Custom Integration Company,
the Gateway certification is valid for 5 years giving
you enough time to map out your next steps for
certification.

Certified
CEDIA now offers certification to meet the needs
of everyone within the industry. If you want a fast
track to getting your CEDIA Technical
Certification, our one week ‘Technical School’ will
teach you much of what you need to know to
pass the EST2 Certification exam as well as
prepare you to hit the ground running in your new
job. Our new ‘Networking School’ can assist
towards you gaining your Residential Networking
Specialist certification. We also offer the Boot

CEDIA has collaborated with the ECA to bring you the
Home Technology Integrator ECS card. This is a related
discipline card provided by the ECS and CEDIA which entitles
you to work on a building site. The qualifying criteria for the
card are that:
- The holder must have passed the ECS Health and Safety
assessment (included in the CEDIA one-day H&S course at
St Neots) within the last 2 years.
- The holder must have passed the CEDIA EST2 qualification
within the last 3 years.
- If the holder took the EST2 qualification prior to January 2011,
we must see evidence that their CEU (CEDIA Education Units)
points have been maintained.
If you or any of your team carry out work on a building site you
need to be able to prove competency to the Health and Safety
Executive (HSE) in the event of a site check or accident. Failure
to do this can result in you and your team not being able to
work whilst investigations take place and this can cost a lot of

Understanding project documentation and its role in the
installation process is key to a successful (and profitable)
project. While 'paperwork' can be the dread of many skilled
technicians the ability to read, process and understand all key
documents within a project is a vital skill for technicians.
This course examines the documents commonly found in a
residential technology project. Students can expect to leave with
a solid understanding of these documents and how they relate to
their job of work.
While working on-site there are a wide range of interpersonal

Aimed at individuals with some or little industry experience who
wish to become CEDIA EST2 Certified, this course will cover
almost the complete examination curriculum as well as applying
the theory to real-world situations.
The package is built up of existing CEDIA courses and, in
conjunction with EST1 Boot Camp covers around 90% of the
curriculum. Newcomers who complete the course will have

RF distribution offers a wide range of signal distribution
possibilities covering radio and TV in both analogue and digital
formats. Modern digital TV services mean a single coax cable
can offer more than 100 channels of entertainment including HD
broadcasts.
Many homes already have some coax installed and this course
explains, in detail, how coax can be used to move signals around
the home, how signals from various sources can be combined and
distributed around the home, and how installers can ensure robust
performance from a coax network.

This one-day course has been designed to give you a basic
understanding of many of the essential AutoCAD drawing
commands & skills necessary to use Computer Aided Design
software in your business.
AutoCAD is the industry standard for Architects & Engineers and is

Custom Installation businesses use CAD to overlay their own
wiring schematics onto architect’s drawings as well as producing

I am already CEDIA Installer Level 1certified. Does the new structuremake my certification old and notrelevant any more?
Absolutely not! Our certifications mustevolve and grow in scope. Your CEDIAInstaller Level 1 certification will remaintotally relevant and active as long asyour CEU requirements are met.
I am a systems designer and neverinstall on-site. Do I still have totake the ‘Installer’ certificationsbefore going for ESD1?
Though we do not require ESD1candidates to have an ESTcertification, it is highly recommendedthat all ESD1 candidates are alreadyEST2 (or Installer Level 1) certified.EST2 contains much more than just‘installation skills’ and forms thetechnical foundation for all higherlevels of CEDIA certification
Are there any new CEUrequirements for the newcertifications?
Our requirement that all certifiedindividuals retain their certified statusby earning 30 CEU (ContinuingEducation Units) during the three yearsfollowing passing their certificationexam will not change and is the samefor all levels of certification.
In addition, if a higher level ofcertification is passed within the threeyear period, the CEU requirement isreset to 30 points needed from thedate of passing the new certification.This will keep ALL CEDIA certificationsheld current.

exempt me from the exams?
CEDIA certification is the ONLYprogram that has been developedspecifically for the residential customintegration and installation market.To promote our membership tospecifiers and consumers as havingthe highest level of competence andprofessionalism in the marketplace, itis necessary for us (as it is for ALLconstruction industry professionals)to show that as an industry we havespecialised qualifications that relatedirectly to the work that we are doingboth on-site and in the office. Whilstother academic qualifications willcertainly help individuals study for ourprograms, we are unable to awardany credit towards our certificationsfrom any previous programs that havebeen passed.
I am a newcomer into the industry.Where should I start?
We offer a one-day course entitled Introto Residential CI and Integration. Thiscourse is not technical but introducesand discusses all the different ways intothe industry for both individuals whowish to gain employment with acompany, or those who wish to set uptheir own company. On completion ofthe day, you will have a goodunderstanding about what your nextstep is as well as understanding thenecessary skill sets and routes toattaining them.
