CEER Inquirer ——February 2019——
ITE Villanova’s chapter of The Institute of
Transportation Engineers (ITE) is looking
forward to host their first general body
meeting for the semester on February 11th.
ITE’s club president Tommy Luo attended the
Transportation Research Board (TRB) 2019
Conference this January in Washington D.C.
The TRB conference is a major event
attracting over 13,000 transportation
professionals around the world. There were
about 800 sessions addressing transportation
topics for policy makers, practitioners,
researchers, and representatives of
government. Tommy was there to present his
undergraduate research and is looking forward
to share his experience at the upcoming
meeting. Executive board members are
currently working on planning future events to
transform ITE to a strong networking and
social club.
VESOP Students who traveled through Villanova Engineering Service Learning
over winter break have completed their projects and those traveling
during spring break are meeting weekly to prepare. VESOP will be
having its first meeting of the semester this Monday, February 11 at 6:30.
There will be food! New members welcome!
ASME For the second semester in a row, this December ASME sponsored a study room for
mechanical engineering students. The event fostered community, providing a place
for students to study during finals with some good food and friends. We have exciting
plans for the upcoming semester. Between guest speakers, trips to engineering
companies, and a mechanical engineering department picnic, ASME hopes to help
create a better sense of community in the ME community at Villanova.
SWE To wrap up the Fall semester, the Society of Women Engineers planned and hosted some great
events! To support women in engineering, we set up an Advocacy Letter table where
engineering students wrote to local senators about their passion for STEM education programs.
This support for STEM education – especially amongst females – manifested in a Girl Scouts
Real Girls Code event with a local Girl Scout troop. We couldn’t tell whether the Girl Scouts
or the SWEesters had more fun! The last event of the semester was an Ugly Christmas
SWEater party where we watched the Grinch and made gingerbread houses – a very festive
and delicious time. With the new year, we’ve been working hard to make this semester even
better.
ChemE Car
The starting reaction has been consistently getting 11 volts in their battery. Now they will be
working on fixing the wiring so that alligator clips are no longer used in order to follow com-
petition safety rules. The starting reaction continues to get good data and have started to think
about how the reaction will be placed in the chassis and how it will trigger the sensor to stop
the motor. The chassis team will be looking into better materials other than wood to make the
car out of. They also will be working on the wiring between motor, sensors, and reaction.
ESC Since November, Engineering Student Council
has kept very busy. We wrapped up December by
holding a stress free event for Reading Day, where
we had an open study room and free doughnuts and
stress balls for students to enjoy. We started out the
new year by selling our custom engineering socks.
This was the organizations first fundraiser of the
year and it went very successfully. In addition,
ESC picked up a few new spring recruits at the
Spring Involvement Fair. We are very happy to
have fresh faces in our organization. February will
start with a Engineering Valentines Day event
where we will give out free doughnuts and
engineering themed valentines cards to anyone
who stops by in CEER Lobby. We are looking
forward to a successful E-Week in later February!
NSBE
The National Society of Black Engineers are an active community of students that believe in our
mission: “to increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers, that excel academi-
cally, succeed professionally, and positively impact our community”. Hope everyone had a good
break! We’re a few weeks in now but NovaNSBE is already #2HYPE! Back in December we
hosted Feliz NOVAdad, our yearly end of the semester party. It was a great success, we had real-
ly good food and had a lot of fun! Our first general body is coming up soon on Tuesday, Febru-
ary 12th in the MDL in CEER! This meeting is focusing on how to uplift your community to
greater heights. Whether its Villanova or home, there is always room for improvement. National
Convention is coming up VERY quickly. It will be held in Detroit, Michigan from March 27th
to the 31st. Many companies will be there, and they will be looking for potential interns or em-
ployees so if you haven’t secured the bag, this is a great opportunity to do so. If you need help
paying for the trip, don’t worry. We’ll have information about our scholarships out soon!
Formula SAE
Formula SAE This month, the Novaracing team has turned its attention to powertrain and
simulations, hoping to implement new mechanics to accommodate changes. The team is
developing engine tunes to accommodate changing fuel types. We are researching the
possibility of 3D printing a fuel tank and redesigning the engine differential mounting system
to properly endure engine loads. We are also exploring programming and software
possibilities to stimulate the performance and handling of the car. Our powertrain team is
further working on an engine analysis in our in-house dyno. Our goal as of now is assembly
until the next vehicle is finalized. If you want to get involved, feel free to stop by the garage or
contact our team captain at jmorga16@villanovaedu!
NovaCANE NovaCANE has started off the spring semester strong with three trips to different
Philadelphia schools as well as judging a science fair at a new school since December. We
will also be trying a new activity with the schools next month focused on water filtration.
The Curriculum Committee has been developing these trips and helping prepare for them.
Last month the students worked on an egg drop competition and one school even refined and
retested what they learned from our trip. If any of this sounds interesting to you, email us to
get involved at [email protected]!
AIChE
AIChE is planning to host a resume review on
Wednesday, February 6th following the Spring
Career Fair, available to all class years. Professionals
from industry will spend 3 hours editing and reviewing
students' resumes
In addition, AIChE hosted a 12 hour process safety workshop on
February 2-3rd . This event was sponsored by Praxair and hosted by
members of the Center for Chemical Process Safety. The entire junior
chemical engineering class and members of the senior class enrolled in a
process design elective attended. This two day work shop
focused on emergency safety, workplace competency, and
inherently safe design considerations. This was the first year
that this event was held at Villanova, and it culminated in
each of the attenedees receiving a certificate showing they
have completed 16 hours of professional development
OXE
In December, Omega Chi Epsilon hosted a successful study session for chemical engineers
from all four years, and really focused on making our learning experience a combined ef-
fort. The final exam study session served pizza, and upperclassman members were readily
available to help their fellow peers prepare for upcoming strenuous exams or final presenta-
tions. In addition, Omega Chi Epsilon will soon be holding their first general body meeting
of the spring semester, to discuss all of the review sessions that will be held prior to each
core class exam. The officers are also discussing the potential to start holding exam reviews
for all Chemical Engineering Elective courses, to provide an even greater opportunity to
work together to succeed. We hope to have another great semester!

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers was
somewhat inactive during the last portion of the Fall
2018 semester. For Spring 2019, SHPE has proposed
to focus on building its capacity and setting a strong
base for future semesters. Our plans for February
include small activities like setting up tables on
campus to promote the organization, co-hosting
NovaQuizzo, and partnering with other organizations
for event to increase our capacity. It is also our plan
to host professional development events like
Resume/Interview workshops and announce events
to attract members before calling our first General
Body meeting by the end of February.
