The college at a glance• Founded: 1905 as the Department of Pedagogy.• Transformed: In 2006, the original CEHD became part

of a newly organized college by the same name, which includes the former General College, and two units of the former College of Human Ecology: School of Social Work and Family Social Science.

• Academic programs: Bachelor of science, certificate, licensure, endorsement, master of education, master of arts, doctor of education, doctor of philosophy.

• National academic rank: U.S. News & World Report ranked the college 17th among all professional schools of education (March 2008), and 11th among all public professional schools.

by over $16 million in endowments• Over 65,000 living alumni. Thirty-four percent of

all school superintendents and principals in the Twin Cities metro area are CEHD alumni. Forty percent of the Minnesota Teachers of the Year have studied and received degrees from CEHD.

College-wide Centers

CAREICenter for Applied Research and Educational Improvement: A collaborative center linking Minnesota school districts and the college. It facilitates cooperative school-based research and evaluation to provide educators with information to improve practice.

CEEDCenter for Early Education and Development: Draws upon resources from several college departments to coordinate knowledge and understanding of issues of early childhood development. CEED conducts training for undergraduates, graduate students and community-based professionals; provides continuing education for practitioners; and disseminates information to practitioners and the community.

College-wide Centers

ICIInstitute on Community Integration: Provides research, professional training and technical assistance to improve community services and social supports to individuals with disabilities. More than 40 active research/ education programs, administers 5 national research centers, and several national training institutes.

MCRRMinnesota Center for Reading Research: Conducts applied research on reading and research on teaching approaches that facilitate reading instruction. The focus is on conducting research that supports teachers, particularly those who teach students of poverty and students from diverse backgrounds. The Center addresses problems and issues in reading that require creative and powerful research efforts.

A new Interdisciplinary Research Initiative

The CEHD Centers for Interdisciplinary Research on Education and Human Development is being created to: • Foster increased levels of interdisciplinary activity among

already established centers and programs of research – CAREI, CEED, MCRR

• Serve as an incubator for new initiatives – STEM education and learning technologies

• Serve as a focal point of access for communication of the types, scope and range of research of CEHD to policymakers, community leaders, professionals, students, and families

Research with Impact• The Institute Child Development has been

ranked No. 1 in developmental psychology by U.S. News and World Report.

• Check & Connect, a proven K-12 dropout prevention program is being extended into community colleges for students at risk of disengaging from school.

• Faculty from curriculum and instruction are taking a leading role on developing statewide science and math standards with a significant impact on K-12 teaching.

• Tucker Center for Women and Girls in Sport is first to identify barriers to physical activity for East African immigrant girls.

Community Collaboration• Inspiring parents, educating youth.

Learning Dreams is built on the premise that actively supporting a culture of learning in homes and communities creates a foundation for students’ educational success.

• Reach for the Sky (RFTS), funded by the National Science Foundation, strives to make STEM more culturally relevant to the Anishinaabe youth. Tribal elders share their knowledge, while University researchers develop related curriculum to teach key concepts about science and math.

Supporting Faculty and Staff Research

Office of Research Consultation and Services (ORCS) Provides expertise in research design, measurement, data analysis,

and database development and management

Office of Research and Policy (ORP) Grant coordinators are assigned to each department and college-

wide center to support grant preparation and new submissions Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training Coffee Breaks for Grants are offered monthly. Topics include:

Information about specific funding agencies including IES, NSF, and NIH; working with foundations; developing external sales; finding funding; human subjects; research design/methodology
