Vinyl records have made a small but substantial comeback in recent years, thanks largely to the textured sound no CD can replicate. But let’s face it: vinyl also makes damn cheap artwork, like local band Destroyer’s Archer on the Beach 12-inch (pictured). Say“CHEERS!”withBEER

One could arrive at a festive soiree with the usual bottle of wine, but after perusing the selection at Brewery Creek Liquor Store (3045 Main, 604-872-3373, BreweryCreekLiquorStore.com), we realized that sometimes only a fi nely crafted beer will do. Thankfully, there are plenty of fantastic bottles that are a stylish step above the typical six-pack. The Binchoise Speciale Noel ($4.65) is an award-winning “party beer” from Belgium. The Hobgoblin Gift Set, from the U.K. ($9.35), is not only fun to look at and silly to say, it also boasts a decorative container and comes with its own glass when the bottle just won’t do. Closer to home, Father John’s Winter Ale ($10.05), a perennial favourite from the Squamish-based Howe Sound Brewing, offers a complex assortment of fl avour notes, including honey, caramel, and ginger. And, fi nally, the awesome folks from Cascade Room, Habit Lounge, and Public restaurants on Main Street have banded together to fi nally give Mount Pleasant what it rightly deserves: the Main Street Pilsner ($6.25).

Skin care and grooming are highly personalized endeavours, but everyone wants to feel soft and smell good. The recently opened Lavan has gone to greater lengths than most to recognize these truths. Visit the one-of-a-kind store and get started by scrubbing your hands with your choice of bath salt in the foot-pedal-operated sink (pictured), then fi nish with one of many scented body butters. The immediate results are miraculous. Better still, this test-drive is complimentary — but you won’t want to leave without one of the many all-natural, small-batch products, made in Israel from Dead Sea minerals and other good stuff. (840 Granville, 604-568-8807, LavanLavan.ca)

Laptop bags have rarely refl ected the fact that many of the people who cart them everywhere are style-conscious creative types. But now, how you coddle your computer can be as much an expression of your personal aesthetic as your clothes and other fashion accessories. The Prague line of laptop bags comes in a rainbow of colours, is sturdy, and offers the option of built-in handles or an attachable shoul-der strap. Available in Vancouver exclusively at Obsessions (101-595 Howe, 604-633-0091, ObsessionsOnline.com); $49.95 (15”), $59.95-$67.95 (17”).

Aeration is key to exploiting the full fl avour and aroma of wine, but traditional decanting takes too long when you and your guests are eager to savour that fi rst glass. Vinturi’s award-winning aerator “opens up” wine immediately as it pours, so it’s ready to drink as soon as it lands in the glass. Plus, it looks really cool! $99 (deluxe set) at Cookworks (various locations, Cookworks.ca)

Su Foster crafts her unique, limited-production jewellery and small art objects in her East Vancouver studio. They’re usually only available from Su herself at occasional studio sales and markets. But you can now fi nd a selection of her pieces (including the textured Westcoast rings, pictured above) at Lloyd’s of Gastown (157 Water, 604-629-0191).

Although it’s by no means new, there are few holiday gifts as versatile or as truly useful as Mark Bittman’s culinary bible, the not-at-all-immodestly-named How to Cook Everything. The weighty tome (over 1,000 pages) offers multiple easy-to-follow recipes for al-most every conceivable fruit, vegetable and protein, promising countless rev-elations for both pro chefs and novice home cooks. $31 at Book Warehouse (various locations, BookWarehouse.ca)

Considered by many to be the best bubble from B.C., Blue Mountain Brut ($27.90) is made according to the méthode traditionnelle, meaning the Okanagan vineyard adheres to the traditional French techniques for making Champagne.

A very small and well-respected Champagne house, Gaston Chiquet ($49.90) is one of the best of the ‘Grower Champagnes’ (grown and produced on the same estate). Made of all Chardonnay grapes in very small cuvées, the comparatively low price offers a remarkable value for an authentic Champagne of this quality.

The granddaddy of Champagnes, Krug ($230) truly is the best of the best. An indulgent treat, Marquis Wine Cellars will be undercutting B.C. Liquor Store pricing by $25 on this top-fl ight vintage until Dec. 31.

Nothing captures the excitement and decadence of the holidays quite like a glass of chilled bubbly. Whether you’re opening your gifts in the morning or ringing in the new year at midnight, there’s a top-fl ight sparkling wine for every occasion and budget.
