B LUE M OUNTAINS G RAMMAR S CHOOL Celebrating 100 Years - 1918 - 2018 Centenary Newsletter - March, 2018 (Vol 2) Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends of BMGS, Our Centenary year commenced with a Service of Thanksgiving, celebrating the Foundation of BMGS in Springwood in 1918. We returned to Christ Church, Springwood, where the School’s services were originally held. More than 100 guests, including Members of the BMGS Board, Staff, parents (past and present) and students, filled Christ Church for this special service, led by Acting Chaplain Mr Luke Webb, and featuring Readings by Mr Tony Le Brun (who attended BMGS in the Springwood Era) and Lachlan Burgess (from our Year 4 class at the Preparatory School, Valley Heights). We were also delighted to have Mr. Barnie McKinnon in attendance, who was a student at BMGS during the Springwood years. The Recollections of Mr. Bill Hughes (1937), Mr. Rex Turner (1938) and Mr. Ian Berkelman (1948) were read by School Captains Zachary Franklin and Laura Clyne, and Vice Captain Jessica Prowse respectively. An engaging and entertaining sermon on our School’s Foundations was given by Mr. Jeremy Clark (Alumni, 1995). Mrs. Debbie Smith (Head of Music), Mrs. Julie Cooney, musicians Emily Ampt (violin), Abraham Darley (violin), Miriam Cooney (oboe/violin) and choristers Abbie Clyne, Leila Harris, Mary Smallhorn, Aisling Tufrey and Lexi Zito provided wonderful musical accompaniment for the Service, which included a hymn sung daily by the boarders and day boys in Springwood and their School Song. The Service was followed by a luncheon in the Church Hall, where a special archival display had been mounted by our Archivist, Mrs. Marlene Plummer. We thank all those who organised, participated in and attended this special event in our Centenary calendar. In March, we have the first of two Festival weekends, with a Cocktail Party at the Carrington (Friday, 16th March), an Alumni v 1sts Sports Carnival (Netball, Hockey, Rugby and Football), (Saturday, 17th March), a BMGS Short Film Festival (Saturday evening, 17th March), and an Anniversary Service at St. Alban’s Anglican Church, Leura (Sunday 18th March).
