Year Five… We Made It!When we started planning this project just over seven years ago I never thought it would be this successful . Not only has it been successful, but we also continue to grow the number of lights and displays each year to add to the magic and excitement of this holiday tradition .
One of the challenges we have is to find ways to make the event different and better every year . We have added new electrical panels to increase the number of trees we can decorate . (Over 300 trees get decorated .) The “dancing lights” area continues to grow each year and is by far the most popular area of the park . Make sure you get a chance to see the moving carousel in the barn area and the new hot air balloon display featuring real fire!
We can’t thank our business sponsors and in-kind donors enough for helping to make this event possible . Each year we need to purchase more lights, tools, equipment and other items in order to continue to grow the lights displays .
I am also blessed to have a great Kiwanis Holiday Lights board of directors . Each one of our volunteer board members brings a unique perspective to our meetings and brainstorming sessions . They’re also very helpful with providing leadership for our volunteer crews during set-up and tear-down . These board members and other key volunteers also work as “Rangers” each night in the park . They spend many hours getting ready for our guests and completely run each night’s show by turning on all of the lights at dusk, greeting and assigning duties to our nightly volunteers and shutting down the park at the end of a busy night . I am so thankful for our strong volunteer leaders!
Finally, I want to personally thank the thousands of volunteers required to help to put on an event of this size . It takes us 10 days (six hours each day) to set-up the entire park . This year we will be open for 37 nights and we run it completely with volunteers . And starting on January 1st we will tear down the park in just three days and pack it up for next year!
On behalf of the Kiwanis Holiday Lights board of directors, I hope you enjoy your visit to the lights show and make sure to come back again and again!
