MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTDAVID T. BRITT, PHDPresident/CEO

My favorite seminary professor - Louisiana native son Dr. Frank Stagg, to be exact - was fondof saying that from a spiritual standpoint, the dangerous end of a sword is the handle.

I'd like to add a footnote: when it comes to building community, the handle of a shovel is oftenthe end that does the most good.

It's not at all uncommon for the donors and volunteers who work with us and with other localagencies to get the most benefit from the work they do to help others. We want all of ourprograms to have an impact on the people who need help, and the impact is real. But thoseof you who do the helping know that you get an enormous amount out of the process, too.

The United Way of Central Louisiana started in 1954 when local donors and volunteers createda way to work together to improve lives. There were some tremendous leaders at our foundingand early years: revered names such as Robert Nash, William Culpepper, George Foote, JohnDeming, and Harry Silver to name just a few. From keeping on top of changing needs to forgingsolutions and developing the resources to put them into action, our bylaws have alwaysarticulated a genuine Cenla spirit for rolling up our sleeves and getting to work for causeslarger than ourselves.

If you're interested in volunteering but aren't sure where to start, let's talk. We can connect youwith opportunities to make a difference, whether it's something simple like reading to children,or something more complex like raising graduation rates or reducing domestic violence. Ifyou'd like to donate, you can do that, too, online, on your phone, and yes, your old-fashionedpledge or check will work just fine.

As one of our local judges told me today, there are several things that really need to happenin our community, and they all require our best brains, spirits, and resources. The United Wayof Central Louisiana is a great way to work together, he said, because "they're accountableand transparent - you know where the money's going." (Too bad that judges can't dofundraising!) We're focusing on specific projects in education, income stability, and health, aswell as demonstrating and raising the level of nonprofit excellence. Thanks for workingtogether with us to make great things happen! Since 1954, together we have changedcountless lives in Central Louisiana - on both ends of the shovel.

“As immediate past chair of the community impact volunteers, I canattest that the process used to review funding requests speaks volumesto the UWCL’s commitment to respect donors’ dollars. The team spendscountless hours reviewing financials and outcomes for each agencyseeking funding. Due to the number of outstanding UWCL memberagencies, each year, we face tough decisions on funding. I admire thededication of each member and will continue to serve as a volunteer. You will have the greatest appreciation for your donated dollars if youvolunteer with us. Thanks to all the members and the United Way boardmembers that continue to serve with other community impactvolunteers. Thanks for your continued support.”

PROGRAM INVESTMENTSIn 2014, United Way of Central Louisiana shifted its focus to three new impact areas for our 2015program investments: Education, Income Stability and Health. We believe everyone deservesopportunities to have a good life; and that means a quality education that leads to a stable job, enough income to support a family through retirement and good health. These three impactareas are each vital components for a good quality of life.

The 2014 program investments represented our last year of focus on the three building blocksthat have characterized our thinking for several years: Successful Children, Strong Families andCrisis Resolution. Our goal is to create lasting change while working to prevent problems fromhappening. We invite everyone to be a part of the change! Together, united, we can createopportunities and inspire hope for a better tomorrow.

In 2014, United Way of Central Louisiana launched a book program, Reading Rocks, to givebooks back to children in our community. We started collecting new or gently used children’sbooks for ages 10 and under. We are thrilled to have hosted three events in 2014 to distributethe collected books back into the community. We are looking forward to expanding thisprogram and adding other United Way programs to increase the impact we are making incentral Louisiana.
