    PRESIDENTIAL THOUGHTS

FIRST DAY OF WINTER, ER, UH, SUMMER?At 5:45 a.m., I get into my Boxster S.

I start the car. The temperature reading on the dash says “42° F.” I back the car out of the garage into pouring rain. It’s cold! Heater on full blast. I zip my coat.

My summer tires are on the car. They are great dry-performance tires in warm weather, but the cold and pouring rain is another story. I get on the highway maxing out at about 50 mph. Any faster and hydroplaning becomes quite noticeable. Long drive.

I arrive at my destination. The rain had stopped, but there was still a bone-chilling cold. Date: June 22, 2019. Destination: High Plains Raceway. Event: Summer School DE.

Yes, the second day of summer was like the first day of winter. However, as the day progressed, it became a very pleasant spring-like day, making the event quite fun.

The “Brians” did a fantastic job in chairing this event. So, thank you Brian Lay and Brian Bobich for putting together our Summer School! Also, thank you to all the volunteers who put the event together – too many to list.

I volunteered to do tech inspection for Summer School. A very experienced driver pulled up to have the car tech inspected. I went through the normal routine. I got to the brake pads. They were marginal – very marginal; right at the dividing line between pass and fail. This driver should have known better. I could have gone either way, but decided to pass the car – with some very stern explanation to the driver. Had I failed the car, the driver would not have been able to get the brake pads fixed in time, would not have been able to participate in the event, AND the driver would have

still paid the event fee. On the other hand, the brakes could have overheated and created a not-too-friendly off-track excursion on one of the faster turns. My decision as tech inspector could have gone either way. The deciding factors to pass the car were that the pads were race-type pads and it was a very light car. Another inspector could have reasonably decided to fail the car. I guess that if I had failed the car, the driver could have appealed to the President of the Club – but in this case that appeal would not have gone very far.

The reason why we have tech inspection ten days before the event is to allow the drivers to fix any deficiencies in time to participate in the event. “Teching” at the track, however, is pass or fail. Fail equals no participation and forfeiting the event fee. Having our members meaningfully participate in our events is important. However, safety is the utmost importance and a crucial part of why we are the top HPDE program nationally. To drivers “teching” at the track: Please do not put our volunteer inspectors in the position of “teching” a marginal car.

We celebrated our 35th year of participating in the Colorado Concours d’Elegance & Exotic Sports Car Show. The show was originally founded by RMR members Tom Scott and Stim Kennedy. Jim Osgood now chairs the event for RMR. Like the Summer School DE, the event started out like winter in spring; very cold and rainy. However, as the day progressed, it became a wonderful day to look at Colorado’s best exotic and collectible cars. The event was amazing. Thank you Jim Osgood and team for such a great event.

Our tour for June was the Steamboat Springs Overnight Tour. Russ Rydberg chaired this very successful event. We had 63 people register and, of those, there were eight people who were attending a tour for the first time. We had two run groups of 16 cars. It was a beautiful day for a drive, with just a little rain as we were going over Gore Pass. Everyone seemed to really enjoy the lunch and company as gauged by the volume of laughter in the Fiesta Jalisco restaurant! We had almost 40 people who chose to stay in Steamboat for the dinner at the E3 Chophouse. It was a great turnout, a very successful tour, and we are looking forward to next year! Many thanks to Russ and his team for putting on such an awesome event and providing the above info to me.

We also had our Northern Colorado Social on June 29th at Poudre Sports Car in Ft. Collins. Zach Schroeder, Poudre’s owner, is such a great supporter of RMR. His yearly socials help bring RMR to Northern Colorado. He also sponsors our Ladies’ Day event, which will be on August 10th. As always, the social was a great event. Please thank Zach when you see him. www.poudresportcar.com.

I’m looking forward to seeing you at all the great events scheduled for July including The Greatest Gathering of Porsches at the Lamar Center on July 11th, the Tarryall Tour, July 14th, Cookin’ on the Plains DE, July 27-28 and, of course, the Porsche Parade in Boca Raton, Florida, July 21-28.

As always, thank our volunteers. Without them, we would not have our nationally top-rated events!

IT’S THE PEOPLE!The PCA slogan “It’s not just the

cars, it’s the people!” is so very true. Overall, the members of RMR are a great bunch of people. You have members from every background, from teachers to doctors, from working in a cubicle to being self-employed at their own office. But when it comes down to it, we enjoy the cars and each other’s passion. It is like a mini vacation when we get together for our events (tours, track days, autocross, and socials). These events often span the timeline of the first introduction to a reunion for longtime members that haven’t been to many events in the last few years. The more I see us grow, the more I appreciate my PCA family. I do have to admit it was my Godfather’s fault for introducing me to PCA! LOL! I have so much fun at our car events; I think everyone should give it try. Don’t be shy! You never know if you may meet your new best friend!

Speaking of friends, I want to share with all the members a few situations that wouldn’t happen any other time. One of which was the Volunteer Party in February and on a cold night. Many came from the Denver area; a few from much farther. Someone in particular (most of you know him by his work – not naming names) lives in Aspen and

was coming down the hill for the party. I started a great friendship with this member and didn’t want him to drive home late at night after the Volunteer Party downtown. So, my husband and I offered a room for the night. He was very grateful, and we ended up spending half the day talking about some thoughts we both had to improve our club. Another thing that happened star ted as a by- chance meeting with another couple that have been members for a long time. They live in Steamboat Springs and we met at the first overnight tour in their hometown. With having older air-cooled engine 911s (1980 and 1971), we had an instant connection. My Light Blue Metallic and their Shamrock Green were both stunning together. We stayed in touch over the years. They helped us find lodging for an early winter escape one year. We get together for dinner when we can. We even met in Telluride for Cars and Colors. We had such a great time whenever we got together, that this wonderful couple asked us to stay with them at their home for the tour we just had with the optional overnight. Again, another fun tour and night in Steamboat! So, remember, you may be nervous to meet new people at all the RMR events, but you just never know

who you may meet and how well you connect! Cheers to all who know this and have the friendships to prove it! By the way, to my inner circle, when is our next Happy Hour? It has been too long! LOL!

I also want to thank our sponsors. Without them, so many of our events would not happen or be as fun without them! My last touring event I ran was the Foothills Tour. I want to thank Mark Zalmanek of Autoworks Colorado for providing some morning treats and juice. I’m sure all who went also appreciated having a rendezvous location with a bathroom! It’s the simple things that mean the most! Thanks Mark!

I look forward to next year too! All of our sponsors are great and really want to be considered family of PCA. Please look up any of our sponsors and check out what they have to offer! They really are car enthusiasts as well!

Cheers to our members! Best in Class!

BIDS FOR KIDS 2019 — AN EVENING IN THE PINES WHAT: 42nd Annual Denver Round Table : Bids for Kids WHEN: Saturday, August 17, 2019 WHERE: “Haven in the Pines”, Castle Pines, CO EVENT CHAIR: Steve Wright at [email protected]

It’s that time again. The 42nd Annual Denver Round Ta-ble Bids for Kids fundraiser is fast approaching. This year’s event promises to be a truly unique experience.

First, we have moved the event forward from our nor-mal September/October timeframe.

Save the date, because it’s all happening on Saturday, August 17th, 2019.

This year, we are at a fabulous new locale. It is a pri-vate 20,000 square foot estate located in Castle Pines. “Haven in the Pines” was developed to offer a unique space for worthwhile charities. Only a few select groups have received an invitation to hold their event here, and Bids for Kids is one of those groups! As an added bonus, this year’s event will be emceed by Den-ver 7 Chief Meteorologist, Mike Nelson.

Our event benefits two special organizations: The Chil-dren’s Colorado Adaptive Recreation for Childhood Health (ARCH) program and Ridgeview Academy.

ARCH provides recreational resources and programs for children, teens and young adults with physical dis-abilities. By focusing on individual abilities, this pro-gram helps kids develop skills that lead to a lifetime of healthy leisure and awareness.

Started in 1967 to help individuals with amputations

get involved in downhill skiing, ARCH was one of the first programs of its kind in the United States. The first group of ARCH skiers included young patients from Children’s Colorado and veterans from the Vietnam War being treated at Fitzsimons Army Hospital. Today, there are programs all over the world based on their current model.

Ridge View Academy has cared for, counseled and educated over 7000 court-adjudicated and at-need young men, helping them to make positive, lasting change in their lives. Funds raised support scholar-ships and small grants needed to restart their lives on a better path.

RMR has been a loyal sponsor of the Denver Round Table Bids for Kids event for many years. The Rocky Mountain Region Jaguar Club is also co-sponsor of this year’s event. There will be a number of “interest-ing” cars on display as well.

If you would like additional information, to register, or to donate, please go to www.denverroundtable.net and follow the Bids for Kids link.

    Hope to see you there!

    Steve Wright, Event Chair

  • TRACK TALK

Dan H. CarlsonLeader, Chief Driving Instructor Committee

RMR-PCA High-Performance Driver Education (HPDE) events are run on the 2.55 miles Full Course. It’s longest straight is 2838’, the tightest turn has a 80’ radius and is 160 degrees (1.5% off camber), banking is commonly 1.5% with the steepest being 4%, the steepest climb is 10%, and there is 300+ feet cumulative elevation change per lap.

Did you know that our beloved High Plains Raceway (HPR) is actually four race tracks in one?

    • Full Course – 2.55 miles

    • West Course – 2.00 miles

    • North Course – 1.86 miles

    • Short Course – 1.28 miles

Do we have a treat in store for you on the Sunday of the July 27-28 Cookin’ on the Plains III HPDE event at HPR! For the second time ever, we are going to run the North Course!

That’s right – the North Course.

And this is why this month’s column is entitled “To Hell on a Bobsled.”

    “To Hell on a Bobsled” is the name of Turns 9A&B and with this track configuration it is exactly that! Rather than significantly slowing through Turn #8 before entering 9A&B on the Full Course, you are absolutely flying into it from the turn-in on the highway straight just before Turn #4. The driving l i n e t h r o u g h 9A&B i s ve r y d i f f e r e n t a n d the braking into Turn #10 is much more aggressive. Th in k a min i-Tu r n # 4 o n l y going downhill; if the entry into Tu r n #10 ge t s you r a t t ent ion now, the “pucker f a c t o r ” g o e s way up from the entry of Turn 9A through Turn #10 – YIKES!

Even though it’s shorter, the North Course still has 11 turns. That’s more than my favorite Pueblo Motorsports Park, La Junta, and Pikes Peak International Raceway. It will be a challenging technical layout and it will also allow drivers to focus on improving performance through turns that one may normally overlook.

Mixing up the track configuration from time-to-time will make everyone a better driver while making our track events even more fun - it’s not the “same old same old.”

Track Manager extraordinaire Glenn Conser said that we could run all of the configurations during a weekend event if we wanted to – wouldn’t that be something!

I can’t wait as I’m already “pumped up” for this special day.

    DRIVING TIP OF THE MONTH

At your next HPDE, get to the Grid early to pick the appropriate starting spot for you and the speed capability of your car. Once you’re there, turn off your engine and sit in your car quietly, close your eyes, and mentally drive the entire track to help focus on what you want to work on. Performance driving takes maxi-mum concentration!

This is just a brief recap of one of the most fun driving events put on by our RMR-PCA dynamic driving duos, Mark Taylor and Holly Jackson.

My husband, Rogers, and I were all registered and looking forward to being part of the lucky participants for the sold-out Foothills Tour. However, as luck would have it, it was just me who ended up going on this exciting adventure. And, believe me I was so happy I decided to go forward with these plans.

After all the preregistrations and driving instructions, all the Porsches and a few “other” vehicles (mine included) lined up in their assignment of four groups. Then we were off and running up the mountains! It was a bit chilly, but with all the hot engines running, the weather was not an issue.

I have lived in Colorado over 40 plus years and never knew the roads we took existed! What an amazing, exhilarating drive it was on some of the most winding roads I have ever traveled on! Great job, Mark! I stayed in the back of our group (blue) so that all those beautiful Porsches could snake and weave in a curvy line of gorgeous machinery. It truly was a sight to behold with the spectacular snow-capped Colorado mountains greeting us!

I am happy to report that I held my own in keeping up with the group. I never knew my vehicle was so capable, and I know she thanks me for letting her come out of her shell, finally! There were a couple of drivers who did keep a lookout for me to make sure these two females (car and driver) had no problems…so thank you so much for being there...just in case.

We ended our tour at Beau Jo’s Pizza in Idaho Springs who hosted us on the grand scale our Club is deserving of…especially when eating pizza! There was an unlimited amount of different selections of hot pizza along with excellent service! Plus, I was able to meet a couple of new, lady RMR driver members who also came by themselves. We shared lots of laughs with fellow drivers and a good time was had by all…as usual…with our great group of RMR-PCA members!

I did miss my husband, Rogers, not being there. But I was thankful for the thrilling drive, the delicious restaurant venue, and the outstanding friendship of fellow Porsche enthusiasts, who welcomed this lady driver and her Mercedes Benz SUV!

Thanks, again, to everyone who made this one of the best RMR-PCA driving events of 2019!

    PAST EVENT : COLORADO CONCOURS

The 36th annual Concours d’Elegance was a wonderful success!

Thank you to all of you who registered and displayed your special and distinctive automobiles to benefit the children, the staff and the facility of Ability Connection Colorado. We all understand and appreciate the level of effort that goes into each and every one of the automobiles prior to their display at the show.

This year there were 450 cars at the Concours which made for a fantastic sight. Rocky Mountain Region (RM) and even Alpine Mountain Region (AMR) showed great presence at the event having over 70 cars on the field. We also had a number of 914’s on display to commemorate the 50 years of the 914, as well as some super rare Porsche’s.

This event was founded by RMR members Stim Kennedy and Tom Scott 36 years ago, and to date has raised over $2 million for Cerebral Palsy of Colorado/Ability Connection Colorado. This year’s Car Show entrance numbers are still being calculated, but we’re estimating there were over 12,000 attendees which was great considering the weather was not the best.

To all of the volunteers, we THANK YOU! Without you, this event would not be possible. This includes everyone from the behind the scenes organizers, judges, timers, runners, scorers, gate workers, parking helpers to the planners. Your work is greatly appreciated!

Last but certainly not least, a hearty THANK YOU goes out to all of the sponsors of the event! We appreciate you all for your sponsorship, dedication, hard work and adding your own f lair to this event that makes it even more special and entertaining.

We hope you all enjoyed the Concours d’Elegance this year and thank you for attending!

    See you next year!

    UPCOMING EVENT

RMR’S HPDE: COOKIN’ ON THE PLAINS III STRAIGHT FROM 4 TO 8

WHAT: High-Performance Driver Education WHEN: July 27—28, 2019 WHERE: High Plains Raceway REGISTER: www.motorsportsreg.com EVENT CHAIRS: Scott Farrell [email protected] Tom Radow [email protected]

It’s official at High Plains Raceway! We got the green light to run the North Course on Sunday! July 27-28 is the perfect weekend for High-Performance Driver Ed-ucation with run groups from novice to expert. Besides having a blast driving on the track, this will make you a safer driver on the street.

Cookin’ On The Plains III Straight From 4 To 8 will run the full course Saturday and the North Course Sunday. While the North Course has fewer corners, it will still be a challenge for the seasoned HPR driver. We will also have lunchtime charity runs both days to support the STEM Robotics Team in honor of STEM’s hero auto enthusiast, Kendrick Castillo.

Even though it’s shorter, the North Course still has 11 turns. On Sunday we will turn in just before turn 4 and go straight to the end of turn 8 (sorry, “straight from 4 to 8” is not yet a drinking song) and carry more speed than usual into turn 9 and experience turn 10 like never before! Wheeeee!!

Membership has grown over the last few years, and your club is making the extra effort to get new drivers on the track at every event. This isn’t racing (fair warn-ing – HPDE

has led to some owners turning their beauty-queen Porsche into a track beast), it is High-Performance Driver Education. Drive the track with a nationally-cer-tified PCA instructor who will ride shotgun and guide you through the two different track configurations. Plus, you get classroom instruction worth hundreds of dollars. RMR makes safety and fun priority one.

Get extra track time or get a taste of the track with the lunchtime charity ride - no helmet required for lunch-time rides (highway speeds). Enjoy dinner and Beer 30 on Saturday night with old and new friends. Then walk some of the track and you will see it from a completely different perspective (with or without beer goggles).

If I haven’t convinced you yet, our Chief Driving In-structor Dan Carlson says, “Mixing up the track con-figuration from time-to-time will make everyone a bet-ter driver while making our track events even more fun - it’s not the ‘same old same old.’” The novice in all of us will appreciate having a few less turns to learn.

Registration on www.motorsportreg.com is open. Share this with your car enthusiast friends. We have loaner helmets and the tech-safety requirements are on the RMRPCA.org website. Non-Porsche cars that meet the safety requirements are welcome. Free pre-tech inspections are July 17 at various locations at var-ious times (see: www.motorsportreg.com), but tech inspections at the track are $50. The direct link to sign up is: http://msreg.com/cookinontheplainsIII.

If you have any questions or concerns, contact Tom or Scott.

    See you at the track!

  • IN THE ZONE

    Rich SandersPCA Zone 9 Representative

This is the third in a series of three month-ly letters which collectively highlight all of the geography in PCA’s Zone 9. Our May letter highlighted the Front Range, east of the Rockies. June addressed my home ge-ography west of the Rockies. This issue will introduce those of you not familiar to our regions “south of the Rockies.”

Prior to this role, I had no reason to pon-der where the Rocky Mountains came to an end as you head south in the US. In 2017, when I took this zone rep “job,” I would not have guessed that a majority of the regions were not either east or west of those moun-tains, but instead, south of them. Now that I’ve flown over and driven around them, I get it.

Anyway, the four regions located “south of the Rockies” are Roadrunner, Carrera, Llano Estacado and West Texas. The larg-est among them is the Roadrunner region, with around 450 primary members. That’s just about the same as their neighboring Al-pine region to the north. Likewise, neigh-boring Carrera and West Texas regions are just about in a dead heat when it comes to membership at 90 and 89 primary mem-bers, respectively. Finally, the Llano Es-tacado region based out of Amarillo, Texas is our beloved mini-region. Those of us “up north” might ask why the numbers drop off so much as we head south and east? There’s no big science to it. The most obvious is population. There are simply fewer poten-tial owners. But you still have to have clubs close to the members. But beyond popula-tion, I’m certain that there are other con-tributing factors to the smaller club sizes. There are lots of “Porschey” things that you find a lot more of in and around the larger Rocky Mountain metro areas that you don’t find as much of in the more southern and eastern regions. Chief among these are Porsche dealers, race tracks, and an abun-dance of “Porsche roads.” Among these four regions, there was only ONE Porsche

dealership until earlier this year with the opening of Porsche of El Paso. In terms of race tracks within the geographic bound-aries, there are really only two available to the clubs among the four regions. Curvy Porsche roads? Well, actually, there are lots of them, but they require significantly more straight-line driving to get to them from the location of the core membership in each re-gion.

But the key point to illustrating these differences is to say that, based on my ob-servations, members “south of the Rock-ies” have the same car culture enthusiasm, strong friendships, and every bit as much fun as their northern Zone 9 counterparts. Carrera region puts on their Oktoberfies-ta, a 3-day track, autocross and tour event through the mountains of Western New Mexico. If you haven’t been, I recommend it. The West Texas region’s holiday party is like none other in the zone. They combine it with a multi-day drive to get to some Porsche roads in the hills. This combined annual celebration seems to be at a new loca-tion each year. Is it possible to have too much fun??? As well, they just landed (pun in-tended) an even bigger autocross venue at a mili-tary airstrip. And they open their arms to other car clubs to join their events. Roadrun-ner region opens up their autocross

events to lots of non-Porsches as well. And when it comes to the percent of member-ship that attends socials, I have no doubt that the Roadrunner region tops every other medium-to-large sized region in the Zone. They are an engaged crowd. And as many know, the Roadrunner region has been host to last year’s national “Treffen Tamiya” and has hosted their own “Fiesta New Mexico” several dozen times. Finally, tiny, Llano Estacado region has weekly and monthly breakfast gatherings that are nothing less than their own local tradition. I’ve enjoyed getting to know lots of volunteers and lead-ers from these regions.

  • I GET AROUND

    Danielle BadlerRMR/PCA Columnist

Not a wallet, although it can be kinda the same thing, can’t it. If you spend it wisely, on collector cars. Just ask Jay Leno or Jerry Seinfeld.

In my peripatetic wanderings over the Internet, I recently came across two “listicals,” of “ 50 cars in Jay Leno’s collection” and “40 cars in Jerry Seinfeld’s collection.” I have no idea who assembled the lists. It doesn’t say. And they’re a bit of a misnomer, because a number of cars on Jerry’s list are no longer in his possession. They’ve been sold at auction. Nonetheless, the lists are an interesting peek into what someone does when they’re inveterate gearheads, and they have the means to scratch their respective itches.

I seem to recall Leno saying two memorable lines about his collection. The first is something on the order of, “You’d do the same thing if you were me.” And the second is, “This is what you do if you have more money than brains.” I can’t argue with either.

Leno’s brood features a lot of weird stuff, many of which like the jet motorcycle and souped-up Olds Toronado have been documented many times. But how about the original “Back to the Future” DeLorean from the movie? A Tata Nano? An MG TD hot rod with 340 hp? A ’63 Chrysler Turbine? I distinctly remember the turbine. A friend’s father tried to get one. I thought they were just loaned out, sort of as a nascent test market sort of thing. But, then again, I’m not Jay Leno.

He also has a lot of brass cars. This category really leaves me f lat. I’ve been wondering for years what people actually do with them. Dust them off for parades? Use them to test various

dilutions of Noxon metal polish? I don’t know.

Except there are a few that actually get my attention; the Stutz Bearcat and Mercer Raceabout. Right? They’re the original sports cars. The latter is on the list. But a Stutz? I don’t know. There’s no mention. You listening, Jay?

I would, however, add Jay’s ’06 Stanley Steamer Vanderbilt Cup Racer. For sentimental reasons. I grew up on Long Island. And I remember spending quality time trying to visualize these beasts galavanting around potato fields that today are just so much suburban sprawl.

Oh, and Jay also owns a ’34 Rolls-Royce Phantom II, with a Merlin V-12 that puts out 1,000 hp and 1,806 lb-ft of torque along with two Miuras, an original 427 Cobra (blue with white racing stripe, of course) a ’17 Acura NSX, a ’17 Ford GT, a ’17 Audi R8, an ’11 Morgan Plus 8 and a ’69 Lotus Elan. I don’t think he owns a single Ferrari. But he does have a McLaren MP4-12C and a McLaren P1, which I’ve seen him wax poetic about on his “Jay Leno’s Garage” TV show.

But the crowning glory, to Leno, is the McLaren F1. According to the write-up, the ’94 is now worth $12 million. Jay says he doesn’t have a favorite in the collection, but this is the first one he would save from imminent disaster, if he had to.

Who could argue with that? Maybe Jerry Seinfeld, if truth be told. Jerry’s love of all things Porsche has been well-documented. But a 917/30? In Sunoco Blue? It’s one of six, and it was never raced. I had no idea. We are not worthy.

To me, that’s the single most badass Porsche ever made. But Jerry doubles down, with his own 962, a 959, a ’97 RSR and a ’64 911 once owned by Ferry Porsche.

He sold his Speedster at Amelia Island for $1.4 million a few years ago. Along with a ’63 Carrera 2 Coupe, a ’58 597 Jagdwagen, a Penske IROC RS (with “Revson” on the side,) a 550 RS and, wait for it, a 718 RSK Spyder … 14 cars in all.

Ah well. Jerry still holds on to an Aston-Martin DB-5 (silver, of course, like in the movie) along with a Miura and a Countach (like Jay) a Daytona (which started stumbling on an episode of “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” with Amy Schumer turning green, maybe from exhaust fumes) a Healey 3000, a BMW 507 and a Beetle.

Like Jay, Jerry also has his numbnut cars: a Fiat 500, a Fiat Jolly, a BMW Isetta (you know, where the door is the whole front of the car) a Karmann-Ghia (with a Porsche engine) and two (yes, two) VW buses, one converted to a camper.

Like Jay, Jerry also has a 300 SL and a Morgan. Although Jerry’s is a Plus 4.

Fitzgerald famously said the rich are different from you and me. To which Hemingway allegedly added, “Yes, they have more money.” My take has always been that this kind of crazy money allows one to indulge in whims of fancy that mere mortals can only dream about.

But dream we do, don’t we. Gotta go and buy a lottery ticket.

    DRIVING EVENTSTOUR

A tour is a non-competitive driving event in which participants follow a given route to a destination (which may or may not be known in advance). A tour may vary in length from a day trip to a long weekend with an overnight stay or two. Tours usually follow scenic routes (which are plentiful in Colorado) and/or visit interesting or obscure destinations. Tours are sometimes combined with rallies to add variety and a dose of competition to the event.

RMR hosts several tours each year; AMR typically offers several as well. A number of tours are usually offered at Porsche Parade.

RALLYA rally is a competitive event in which

contestants attempt to follow a course specified by a set of instructions. Rallies are typically run on public, paved roads, and speed limits are always observed. The two major types of rallies are the Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) rally and the Gimmick rally. In a TSD rally, participants attempt to follow the instructions precisely, maintaining the correct speed, as points are deducted for arriving at checkpoints (the locations of which are not known in advance) early or late. A Gimmick rally is typically a bit less rigid and usually involves solving puzzles of some type.

Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies—at least one of each type—are offered. Porsche Parade also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes a Gimmick rally, each year.

AUTOCROSS (AX)An autocross is a competition in which

drivers navigate their cars through a course defined by orange cones, usually in a large parking lot. Top speeds are generally moderate, topping out around 40-65 MPH (no higher than second gear for many cars). Competing cars are spaced at long intervals — typically only two or three cars are on the course at the same time. Autocross is a safe way to experience high-performance driving while learning to drive your car at its limit.

Additionally, autocross is a major event at Porsche Parade

DRIVER EDUCATION (DE)A driver education event provides a

safe, controlled environment for high-performance driving instruction. DE offers drivers of all skill levels the opportunity to hone their driving skills, with the help of an experienced instructor, in a controlled, closed-course environment. In keeping with PCA philosophy, the pr imar y emphasis at all times is on safety. A word of warning, though: the DE experience may be habit-forming!

As DE events are not racing, nor preparation for racing, lap times are not recorded. However, some DE events are followed immediately by a time trial event, which gives drivers a chance to quantify their performance. Lap times may then be used to measure personal improvement or for bragging rights amongst your peers, etc.

RMR hosts six DE’s each year at High Plains Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at the La Junta, Pueblo and (possibly in the future) Pike’s Peak International Raceway tracks.

CLUB RACEA club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing

event. A race weekend consists of a number of practice sessions and “heats” (race sessions), often involving both “sprint” and “endurance” races.

Since a Club Racing license (issued by PCA National) is required for competition, club racers are serious and experienced drivers. The cars they bring with them to the track can be quite impressive! As a point of interest, the PCA Club Racing program was inaugurated with the RMR-hosted “First Ever Anywhere” club race at Second Creek in 1992.

Because of the logistics involved in an event of this magnitude, a club race requires a legion of volunteers. However, it is also one of most exciting events to participate in, so be sure to sign up!

RMR hosts one club race each autumn at High Plains Raceway which, when combined with a Driver Education event, adds up to one thrilling weekend!

NON-DRIVING EVENTSMEMBERSHIP SOCIAL Membership socials provide an oppor-tunity to reconnect with old friends and meet new members. Historically, a mem-bership meeting begins with a social hour with a cash bar, followed by the evening’s program. The content of the program var-ies, sometimes featuring a “slide show” from a recent event, or a guest speaker such as accomplished Speed World Chal-lenge racer Randy Pobst.

Membership socials, unless otherwise stated, are held the first Thursday of the month. Different venues and topics will keep the meetings fresh and inviting. Watch HighGear and the RMR Web site for details. If you have any ideas for a program, talk to the Committee Chair or a Board member!

TECH SESSIONA tech session is just what it sounds

like–a session in which a technical topic is discussed. Not just for gearheads, a tech session may demonstrate practical, “do-it-yourself ” procedures such as brake bleeding. Tech sessions are usually presented by exper ienced Porsche technicians, many of whom are sponsors of RMR events and High Gear.

RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year, typically in the “off months” when few driving events take place. In addition, numerous tech sessions are offered at Porsche Parade. Concours d’Elegance

A concours is essentially a car show, in which contestants endeavor to present their cars in as close to “perfect” condition as possible. A number of judged categories usually exist, typically differentiating between types of cars (e.g. 356, Boxster) and level of preparation (“daily driver” or “full preparation” or somewhere in between). Cars sometimes may be entered as “display only,” for owners who wish to participate but not compete.

RMR participates in a handful of local concours events each year, including the annual Exotic Spor ts Car Show and Concours d’Elegance, benefiting United Cerebral Palsy Colorado. The annual Porsche Parade also hosts a major concours each year.

WHAT WE DOWhether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have fun in your Porsche by participating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses, rallies, tours, tech sessions, car shows and more.
