Page 2: Celebrating Film 20 Years

With so much change taking place around us it is perhaps comforting to realise that our local film festival is now 20 years old and a firm fixture in the local events calendar. From its small beginnings in celebrating 100 years of cinema it has gradually evolved to embrace over 30 venues and 70 films. It is a festival

that has satisfied the desire for cinematic art as well as cinematic entertainment, a festival which has introduced us to so many different worlds and provided such a plethora of different experiences.

Our theme this year, not surprisingly, is celebration. Certainly we will celebrate the festival with an evening at the Rex with ‘The English Patient’, first shown 20 years ago but there will be other celebrations: the film director, the film actor (Purbeck’s Googie Withers), the cinematographer (Douglas Slocombe), the courage of women and men, 40 years of punk music and 400 years of Shakespeare. We are also extremely excited at the prospect of welcoming Dame Maggie Smith for a special two-day event which will celebrate her extraordinary stage and screen career on the opening weekend of the festival, sponsored by the Dick Odgers' Memorial Trust.

I trust once again that you will find in our programme the feelings, the thoughts and the sensations that only cinema can give.

Festival VenuesThe unique Rex Cinema in Wareham, under the ownership of Purbeck Film Charitable Trust, is the main Festival venue, a nostalgic viewing experience complete with the original gas lamp fittings. Sound and picture quality are bang up-to-date though and this year the auditorium has undergone a splendid complete refurbishment. The Rex bar will be open forty-five minutes before the main or second feature. On-street parking and nearby car parks.

The Lighthouse in Poole will be showing a programme of films during the Festival with plenty of comfy seats. Each film is accompanied by an introductory talk. Food is available at the café before a film or alternatively, enjoy a drink in the comfortable first floor bar. Easy parking nearby in the multi-storey car park.

For films in the conurbation of Bournemouth we are again at Pavilion Dance South West (PDSW) and at the Hilton Hotel for a special event with Diverse Abilities.

In Swanage films are screened at Durlston Castle, which will also host our exhibition, The Black Swan, The Grand Hotel, St Mary's Church and, new this year, Swanage Cricket Club.

We shall also be visiting Village Halls and other interesting and unusual Venues. Newcomers for 2016 are Four & Twenty Blackbirds in Corfe, The Isle of Purbeck Golf Club, The 29029 Restaurant in Sandford, West Lulworth Village Hall and the Worth Matravers Tea and Supper Room.

Some of our smaller venues have very limited seating and advance booking is recommended - see programme details for more information.

For a full list of venues see page 6 and go to our website for how to find them.

7.15pm - Rex Cinema, Wareham - £6.50Opening Gala - the start of our 20th Anniversary YearOUR LITTLE SISTER PGHirokazu Kore-eda's enchanting new film channels the Japanese master Ozo Yasujiro at the same time as it lovingly recreates the world of Hollywood 1940s family melodrama like 'Little Women'. Calling on the audience to travel with it into the warm embrace of its small-town setting, the film richly repays our suspension of cynicism. Screened at Cannes in 2015 it tells the story of three sisters in their twenties who live together in a rambling ancestral home. At the funeral of their estranged father their carefully calibrated lives are disturbed when they meet their smart younger half-sister. (Hirokazu Kore-eda, Japan, 2015, 128 mins) (subtitles)

8.15pm - Rex Cinema, Wareham - £6.50BORN TO BE BLUE 15Introduced by David Holman and TrumpeterIf Hollywood has taught us anything, it’s that great musical talent often comes with great personal problems. It certainly did for Chet Baker, the subject of this very good film anchored by one of Ethan Hawke’s best performances. Chet Baker had a rollercoaster of a career, the peaks fuelled by his heartfelt ability to play the trumpet and the valleys deepened by his addiction to heroin. Focusing on Baker’s talent and addiction the film wisely concentrates on a section of Baker's life starting years after he began his battle with drugs, but before his comeback in the ‘70s. (Robert Budreau, UK/Canada/USA, 2015, 97 mins)

CITY LIGHTS UPatron’s Choice - Daniel BelbenOf all Chaplin’s films (with the possible exception of ‘Modern Times’), ‘City Lights’ offers the fullest characterisation of the Tramp. He’s a loner who comes and goes almost like a dream figure or a drunken angel. Without family, friends, or a place to live, he stands outside of our reality, sometimes trying to fit in and sometimes not caring whether or not he does. Yet, like a child, he is a complete innocent with a pure heart and the best motives. The most touching thing about his relationship with the Flower Girl is that, because she is blind, she cannot see his shabby appearance and does not judge him the way others do and, when her sightlessness has been lifted, her attitude does not change. Her new eyes see past the hobo’s clothing. (Charles Chaplin, USA, 1931, 87 mins)

11.30am to 4.00pm - Rex Cinema, Wareham - £25.00 to include film, lunch, tea & cakeThe First of Two Very Special Events with Dame Maggie SmithMAGGIE IN FILM This is the first of 2 wonderful and unique opportunities to see Britain's much-loved star of stage and screen in person. The day begins with a screening of 'The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie' at 11.30am, followed by a delicious local lunch from Salt Pig chefs. At 2.30pm Dame Maggie will be in conversation about her distinguished career in cinema. The event will conclude with tea and cake in the Rex auditorium at 4.00pm. The event is kindly sponsored by Maggie herself, and the Dick Odgers Memorial Trust. It is supported by the generosity of Salt Pig, Wareham (private lunch for Dame Maggie and guests), Wareham WI (cakes) and Bouquet Florists.

THE PRIME OF MISS JEAN BRODIE 12A film that continues to live on in our memories primarily because of Maggie Smith's wonderful performance as a free spirited teacher in a Scottish girls' school: a role that deservedly won her an Oscar. (Ronald Neame, UK/USA, 1969, 116 mins)

Please respect that there will be no photographs, no autographs and that any questions you might like to pose to Maggie must come through the film festival organisers in advance of the event. Email your questions to: [email protected] and we will attempt to incorporate them into the conversation. Tickets will be available to festival patrons and sponsors first, then to Purbeck postcode applicants and finally to other parts of the country. Details on our website or at Rex Box Office.

6.00pm - Rex Cinema, Wareham - £6.50MARGUERITE 15Patrons' Choice - Tom's Field Camping, Sarah & John WoottonParis, 1920s. Marguerite is a wealthy woman who loves music, particularly opera, and adores singing and performing for her loved ones. She's not actually a brilliant singer, indeed almost tone deaf (!) but remains blissfully unaware of this fact as both friends and her husband have kept the fantasy of her talent. The problems start when she decides to perform for a real audience. Loosely based on the true story of American socialite and amateur singer Florence Foster Jenkins the film was screened in competition at Venice and garnered 11 Cesares. (Xavier Giannoli, France, 2015, 124 mins) (subtitles)

Allan Karlsson, a man who likes blowing up things, has lived an eventful life meeting and influencing significant figures of the 20th century along the way. On his 100th birthday, stuck in a nursing home, he leaps out of a window and begins an unexpected journey. Unwittingly taking a suitcase filled with money he is pursued by the gang who stole the money, the police and the home staff. Robert Gustafsson is perfect in the role of Allan managing to play him believably across many decades as the film cleverly moves between his present predicament and his earlier life. RAN 12ABased on Shakespeare’s King Lear, an ageing lord divides his lands between his three sons, but banishes the younger for expressing his concern about the idea. Made by Kurosawa, in his own old age, the film stands alongside his ‘Seven Samurai’, and joins the list of classic films. There are amazing battle scenes (no CGI here) stunning imagery, clever dialogue. (Akira Kurosawa, Japan, 1985, 162 mins) (subtitles)

6.00pm - Rex Cinema, Wareham - £6.50Celebrating the Courage of Women

SPEED SISTERS PGA winner of the Best Documentary award at the Adelaide Film Festival the film has been described as a “refreshing stereotype-breaker and a vivid illustration of the diversity of the Palestinian experience”. With the West Bank as a backdrop, tense military occupation sadly the norm and their civil liberties restricted, five young Palestinian women establish themselves as the first race car driving team in the Middle East. Vying for recognition in a male dominated sport, this fascinating study reveals them as remarkable women battling repression of all kinds. A very engaging and immersive experience. (Amber Fares, Palestine, 2016, 78 mins) (subtitles)

8.15pm - Rex Cinema, Wareham - £6.50Celebrating the Courage of Men

PALIO 12A thrilling documentary and an exemplary film. This is an insiders view of the Palio, Siena’s bi-annual piazza bareback horserace and all of the district rivalries, bribery and tactics involved. The race itself is a mix of collusion and chance with horses and jockeys at high risk of injury. The film delves first into the history of the Palio, introducing the former jockey and Siena legend Silvano Vigni who takes us through this film and his rivalry in the 70s and 80s with another winning jockey. (Cosima Spender, Italy/UK, 2015, 91 mins) (subtitles)

7.30pm - Durlston Castle, Swanage - £7.00 to include parkingTHE LIVES OF OTHERS 15Ali Tuckey’s Film ChoiceDonnersmarck’s script is brilliant and his direction flawless. The film is cleverly plotted, nicely detailed, emotionally powerful and odd though it may seem, given its wintery East Berlin scenario, it looks beautiful. However some of those who suffered under the East German regime and the secret police (Stasis) refused to see the film. It is for you to judge whether the premise is believable. 8.15pm - Rex Cinema, Wareham - £6.50VICTORIA 15Patrons' Choice - Sarah Speakman-Jones & Lee Jones'Sebastian Schipper's low-budget drama about a reckless young girl's excursion into the world of crime would be an ordinary enough affair were it not for the astonishing fact that he and cinematographer Sturla Brandth Grøvlen shot the whole 138 minutes in a single take, roaming the streets of Berlin to encompass 22 different locations en route. Bolstered by an atmospheric score by Nils Frahm and masterful performances by its young leads, who improvised most of the dialogue. The result is a lively and engrossing exercise in creative swagger.' Lisa Mullen - Sight and Sound (Sebastian Schipper, Germany, 2015, 138 mins) (subtitles)

7.30pm - Lytchett Matravers Village Hall - £6.00DAD’S ARMY UDon't panic - this is not an award winning, critically acclaimed film but a hugely enjoyable movie especially for those who were fans of the TV series. Stars on parade include Toby Jones, Bill Nighy, Tom Courtney, Michael Gambon, the seductive Catherine Zeta-Jones and Heinz the Pigeon as himself. The Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard platoon deal with a female journalist and a German spy as World War II draws to its conclusion. Bar and Purbeck Ice Cream available. Struggling with his newfound role of guardian, Oren turns to his neighbour Leah for guidance and ultimately learns how to love again. The easy-going charms of Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton blend beautifully in this discerningly funny rom-com with a pedigree. Directed by Rob Reiner famous for 'The Bucket List' and 'When Harry Met Sally'. Doors open 7.00pm. Light refreshments and Purbeck Ice Cream available before the film. Ample Parking. She writes a long letter to her daughter Antia explaining the secrets she has kept from her over the last 30 years. But when she finishes her confession, she doesn't know where to post it, because they have been estranged since Antia left her at the age of 18. This is an eloquent and richly resonant film, with Almodovar eschewing the energetic farce of his last release in favour of a return to his great subject, the emotional terrain and interior lives of women. GOSFORD PARK 15'Gosford Park' is such a joyous and audacious achievement it deserves comparison with Altman's very best. This is no less than a comedy about selfishness, greed, snobbery, eccentricity and class exploitation, and Altman is right when he hopes people will see it more than once. TRAINSPOTTING 15This cultural phenomenon, based on the best selling book by Irvine Welsh, hit the big screen 20 years ago and was voted one of the best films of 1996. A black comedy that is hilarious, tragic, brutal and uplifting, depicting the devastating consequences that can happen to drug users. The young cast, like Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller and Robert Carlyle, went on to success in the movies and television so here is an opportunity to see them again, on a big screen, at the beginning of their careers.Reviewed as ‘Trainspotting is a visionary knockout, spiked with insight, wild invention and outrageous wit.’ (Danny Boyle, UK, 1996, 94 mins.)Tickets from: The Black Swan Inn: 01929 423 846. 7.15pm - Rex Cinema, Wareham - £6.50 Celebrating 400 years of ShakespeareRICHARD III 15Sponsored by Humphries KirkIntroduced by Deborah PaigeSet in 1930s England, against the background of the Simpson affair, and the rise of the Nazis, this modern production cleverly captures the mood of the time, with flawless performances from McKellen and the cast. The film brilliantly adapts the play to twentieth century warfare, and watch for the line 'A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse'? (Richard Loncraine, UK, 1995, 104 mins)

7.30pm - Durlston Castle, Swanage - £8.00 (includes parking)Special Event - The Cabinet of Living Cinema presentsTHE KINGDOM OF PAUL NASHAppropriately hosted at Durlston, we present an evening of live music and film, to celebrate the world of Paul Nash. Nash died in a guest-house in Boscombe, Bournemouth on the 11th July, 1946, having spent his last ten days revisiting the places of Dorset that had inspired his surrealism: the dream-like landscapes and inanimate objects he had found in and around Swanage. 'The Kingdom of Paul Nash' is a new work created by The Cabinet of Living Cinema, who specialise in producing live scores to film. After embarking on a sea voyage along the jurassic coast, The Cabinet have created a beautiful animation and new musical accompaniment to bring to life Nash’s encounter with the Purbeck landscape. The second half of the evening will be 'A voyage exploring the natural world, flora and fauna through a retrospective programme of animation and stop frame'.Tickets from:Durlston Castle: 01929 424 443. Beecham House is a retirement home for musicians and opera singers. In some ways it's a familiar tale of an institution running out money and the residents eventually coming together to try and save the day but this is not all about putting on a show. There is love, mystery and the pathos of getting old. There are powerful performances from Maggie Smith, Tom Courtney, Pauline Collins, Michael Gambon and poignantly Billy Connolly. 'Quartet' is probably best summed up by the aggregate review in Rotten Tomatoes - 'it's sweet, gentle, and predictable to a fault, but Dustin Hoffman's affectionate direction and the talented cast's amiable charm make Quartet too difficult to resist.' (Dustin Hoffman, UK, 2012, 98 mins)

7.30pm - St Mary's Church, Swanage - £6.00ITALIAN FOR BEGINNERS 15Think of 'Italian for Beginners' as an early Valentine from somebody unexpected, someone who’s maybe too eager to please or too attached to his mother but who sweeps you off your feet anyway. It's a story of a group of Danish thirtysomething students in an adult-ed class. The film is a perfectly conventional romantic comedy with coincidences and couplings coming easily. But cynicism is for suckers. Lone Scherfig, the writer-director, has made a film so unabashedly hopeful that it actually makes the heart soar. Yes, soar. As well as outstanding performances from Smith and Jennings there is a strong supporting cast from the likes of Jim Broadbent, Roger Allen and Francis De La Tour. Acknowledging its genius on the stage 'The Lady in the Van' is the sort of movie where no one seems to work too hard. But with Hytner's direction the many layers of story, some humorous and others almost unbearably sad come together to create an almost perfect result. This is a film that should leave you feeling entirely satisfied - even if you have seen it before. Though it garnered no Oscars, Maggie Smith won the 2015 Evening Standard Best Actress award for her performance as Miss Shepherd. (Nicholas Hytner, UK, 2015, 104 mins)

JULIA PGPatrons' Choice - Lida & Gordon MuttonIntroduced by Robin VidgeonWinner of 3 Oscars and Fred Zinnemann’s last great movie, the story is based in part on Lillian Hellman’s memoir as Hellman recounts her friendship with the enigmatic Julia. Julia has abandoned her wealth and devoted her life to fighting Fascism. She is currently helping the resistance movements in Europe. Lillian decides to bring some American currency to help Julia in her struggles. Zinnemann creates a melancholic feeling throughout a movie of deliberate pace. The excellent music by Georges Delerue is haunting and the cinematography by the under-appreciated Douglas Slocombe is beautiful. (Fred Zinnemann, USA, 1977, 117 mins)

Robin Vidgeon was born in 1939 in London. He is known for his work on 'Hellraiser' (1987), 'Hellbound: Hellraiser II' (1988) and 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' (1981). Honorary Member of the Guild of British Camera Technicians.

It is this awe-inspiring background that is the location for this masterful coming-of-age film, one that has been described as an 'Arabic Western'. It is the story of a young Bedouin boy who must fight for survival against unknown enemies in the stark, unforgiving desert where 'the strong eat the weak'. A rapturously shot film it is a perfect companion piece to David Lean's 'Lawrence of Arabia'. (Naji Abu Nowar, Jordan, 2014, 100 mins) (subtitles)

7.30pm - West Lulworth Village Hall - £6.00BROOKLYN 12AA critical and commercial success, 'Brooklyn' was sensitively adapted by Nick Hornby from Colm Tóibín’s novel of the same name. The plot follows Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan), a young Irish woman who emigrates to Brooklyn in the 1950s to find employment. 'Brooklyn' gathered awards and nominations in a variety of categories and Ronan’s performance was particularly praised. Mark Kermode has called it a 'refreshingly old-fashioned' film, partly because the style of film-making harks back to a time when ‘women's pictures’ were the backbone of popular cinema. 8.15pm - Rex Cinema, Wareham - £6.50DHEEPAN 15Winner of the Palm d'Or at Cannes in 2015 the film's unexpected focus is on Dheepan a Tamil Tiger in Sri Lanka. As the civil war ends and the Tamils face defeat he decides to flee to France taking with him two strangers, a woman and a girl. Posing as a family they take up residence in a run-down housing estate in Paris. He works hard but the violence around him brings out old psychological wounds. 'Audiard possesses lyricism that makes his films stand out... immensely powerful' Andrew Pulver, Guardian. (Jacques Audiard, France, 2015, 115 mins) (subtitles)

8.00pm - Lighthouse, Poole - £8.50, Student £6.00, Senior £7.50THE COMMUNE NRThe commune represents the story of Erik and Anna, an academic couple who set up a Danish commune in bohemian 1970s Copenhagen. What follows is a compelling clash between their personal desires and the dream of communal solidarity; as their ideal of tolerant socialist living is eclipsed by an earth-shattering love affair, putting their relationship, their community and their commune to its greatest test. (Thomas Vinterberg, Denmark, 2015, 111 mins) (subtitles)Tickets from: www.lighthousepoole.co.uk 0844 406 8666

7.30pm - Durlston Castle, Swanage - £7.00 to include parkingTRUMBO 151947. Bryan Cranston gives a great performance as Dalton Trumbo, who was a top Hollywood screenwriter until his active membership of the Communist party brought him up against anti-communist gossip columnist Hedda Hopper, played by Helen Mirren, and John Wayne amongst many others. His views led to him being jailed and blacklisted by the movie industry. The film follows Trumbo's fight back, writing under a pseudonym, as he uses his skill with words to expose the absurdity and injustice of the blacklist, winning two Academy Awards in the process. Although a dark subject matter, the film is full of wit and clever lines. (Jay Roach, USA, 2015, 124 mins)Tickets from: Durlston Castle: 01929 424 443. However, this is 1960s London and the new family is Jamaican, experiencing hostility from the neighbours as had David's family as they themselves are immigrants from wartime Germany. David, and his family, have difficult choices to make. Bar & Purbeck Ice Cream available. Booking recommended. (Paul Morrison, UK, 2003, 106 mins) Tickets from: Swanage Cricket Club. 6.00pm - Rex Cinema, Wareham - £6.50Celebrating Screen ActingWHITE CORRIDORS UIntroduced by Joanna McCullam - daughter of Googie WithersNominated for best film at the BAFTAS and Venice's GOLDEN LION this excellent British film paved the way for British hospital TV dramas such as 'Emergency Ward Ten' in the 60s through to 'Casualty' in the 21st century. Googie Withers is a very under-rated actress and plays her part to perfection. The festival has great pleasure in welcoming Joanna, Googie Withers' daughter, to introduce the film and talk about the role of the screen actor following the screening. (Pat Jackson, UK, 1951, 102 mins)

8.15pm - Rex Cinema, Wareham - £3.50 including a glass of wineCelebrating 20 years of The Purbeck Film FestivalSponsored by Talking Legal THE ENGLISH PATIENT 15For those who have forgotten the depth of romance and passion that the movies are capable of conveying, 'The English Patient' is a powerful remedy. This is an unabashed and powerful love story, using flawless performances, intelligent dialogue, crisp camera work, and loaded glances to attain a level of eroticism and emotional connection that many similar films miss. Its melodramas are finely-honed, embracing the viewer rather than smothering them. This well-crafted love story is simultaneously epic and intimate.Tonight we are celebrating 20 years of the Purbeck Film Festival and the evening will be introduced by Tony Viney the chair of our Trust. The price will be what it was in 1996 plus a free glass of wine. (Anthony Minghella, USA/UK, 1996, 162 mins)

Conor is a new kid at an inner-city school who gradually musters the courage to talk to Raphina; a model preparing to move to London. He asks her to be in his music video and she agrees - only problem is, he's not yet in a band. With his older brother and a charming crew of mates, Conor blossoms from timid kid to cool teen, finding within music the power to escape his troubled home life. Based on Noel Coward's 1936 play - Still Life - it works on an almost claustrophobic canvas revealing a very simple story of love and of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. A brilliant period piece, it may be the simplicity and familiarity of theme that has ensured its longevity and popularity. (David Lean, UK, 1946, 86 mins)

His views led to him being jailed and blacklisted by the movie industry. The film follows Trumbo's fight back, writing under a pseudonym, as he uses his skill with words to expose the absurdity and injustice of the blacklist, winning two Academy Awards in the process.

Omar is captured by the Israeli military after an attack with Nadia's brother. His subsequent and seemingly too-quick release from prison, sows discontent among his insurgent friends. It's a story of a group of Danish thirtysomething students in an adult-ed class. The film is a perfectly conventional romantic comedy with coincidences and couplings coming easily.

PFF website www.purbeckfilm.com & The PFF Box Office at the Rex Cinema6.45pm - Rex Cinema, Wareham - £6.50 with Drinks on arrivalQUARTET 12A Sponsored by Renaissance, Fleur-de-Lis & DomvsThis is an emphatically 'British' film based on Ronald Harwood's play directed by that most American of actors Dustin Hoffman in his directorial debut.

5.45pm - Lighthouse, Poole - £8.50, Student £6.00, Senior £7.50MUSTANG 15Early summer. In a village in northern Turkey, Lale and her four sisters are walking home from school, playing innocently with some boys. The family home is progressively transformed into a prison; instruction in homemaking replaces school and marriages start being arranged. The five sisters who share a common passion for freedom, find ways of getting around the constraints imposed on them. Oscar nominated. (Deniz Gamze Erguven, Turkey, 2015, 97 mins) (subtitles)

Page 43: Celebrating Film 20 Years
