President’s ReportOctober 2020

Submitted by Donna CurtisSome things have changed for the better since last

month’s report. Brick schools have reopened with a hybrid schedule and kids can see their teachers, their friends and experience some semblance of normal. The pandemic has been as hard for children as it has for many adults so this is an encouraging time.

I am hoping that by the time you read this we have been able to reopen the Clubhouse and reinstate some of the activities we have come to enjoy. I am sad for the many new residents who have joined our community since the beginning of the pandemic. They have not been able to experience many of the events and activities that have had to be put on hold. For me among the most compelling reasons for me to choose Greenbriar were our pools and pool deck. It was so painful for the Board to make the de-cision to keep it closed this summer. As the Chicago Cubs would say at the end of every disappointing season: “Wait til next year”. Their hope eventually paid off. Let’s hope we can have the same experience next summer.

Outside of Greenbriar, things are looking up as well. Restaurants have reopened for indoor dining, movie the-aters and gyms have reopened (with many restrictions and limitations) and wearing facemasks has become as normal as wearing a seatbelt. Remember how awkward they felt at first? Now, not so much.

The Board and the staff understand how challenging this time has been for all our residents and we appreciate your patience and support. I want to thank all of you for your willingness to adhere to the guidelines that were put in place to keep everyone safe. I also want to thank Gail Hoadley and the Veterans Committee for bringing some sunshine into the community with lovely concerts at the lake. They provided a wonderful opportunity to see our neighbors and enjoy some great music.

The Greenbriar Trustee election will take place this month. Candidates’ night will be virtual this year so if you have questions you’d like the candidates to answer, please submit them prior to the event. Please follow the instruc-tions for casting your ballot as explained in the letter sent to all residents by Election committee.

Greenbriar Board of Trustees Meeting August 24, 2020, 11 am

PENDING BOARD APPROVAL Salute to the Flag and a moment of silence was observed.

Roll Call: Donna Curtis, Pat McClendon, Tony Gaita, Tom Whitty, Bill Petrolino, Wally cason, Tony Lionellii, Nanette L’Hernault.

Donna thanked Kyle Velardi who was recording the meeting. It will be uploaded to the Greenbriar I Friends Facebook page and also the Greenbriar I website. Call the office for information on how to view it.

Pat read the minutes of the June 29th meeting. Motion to accept minutes Bill, 2nd Donna. All in favor, motion passed.

Tom Whitty gave the Treasurer’s Report. It will be posted.

Administrator’s Report - We are continuing to col-lect food for the food pantry and also clothes and purses for the women’s shelter.

High Tech is spraying for crab grass. There are books available for pick up in the vestibule

in the front of Clubhouse. You may take a book and return it when you have read it.

Willow Springs will sponsor an event at the lake dur-ing the second weekend in September. More information to follow.

Motion to approve ACC Report Pat, 2” Bill. All in favor, motion passed.

President’s Report - We are still doing virtual meet-ings due to the fact that there is a 25 person indoor limit and at this point, we don’t have a choice. We sincerely hope this method is helpful to you.

There have been numerous complaints about the lawns. This has been an exceptionally hot summer and the violent storms we’ve experienced have blown out the timers on many of our wells. We are working on making repairs.

We have been building up our reserve fund in order to replace the HVAC in the Clubhouse and the irrigation system. At this point, the irrigation system is of the utmost importance. We are in the process of getting bids to update the system and working with an engineer on the design. The work will have to be done in phases, with the most damaged areas being done first. This is a very costly project.

There have been questions and comments on the Greenbriar Friends Facebook page about political flags. The only flags permissible are the American Flag, the MIA/POW flag and branch of service flags. While we cannot prohibit political signs, we can limit the size, placement and duration of display. The sign may be sized to fit the bottom

half of your double hung window. That same size sign may also be displayed on your door for three weeks prior to the election and one week after. There are no exceptions.

The residents interested in running for the Board of Trustees may mail or drop off your resume and candidacy declaration at the Security Office in the lobby of the Club-house no later than 4 pm on August 28, 2020.

The Greenbriar Clubhouse will not be a polling place In the 2020 Presidential Election. No only do Greenbriar residents vote here, but there are many other people who do not live here that also vote. When you received your sample ballot in the mail, your polling place will be listed there. The other option is to vote by mail.

Generators will be allowed, not only for medical rea-sons. You must not only get permission from Greenbriar, but also from Brick You will need plumbing and electrical permits. No portable or gasoline generators are allowed and they must be linked to your natural gas line.

We received a letter regarding flooding during rain storms. It was suggested that we open the Slues gate at the lake when heavy rain is forecast. That can only be done with a permit from DEP and the Township Engineering Department is the only one allowed to open it.

Meeting adjourned.

Let’s Meet. Anne MaurielloSubmitted by Barbara Savino

Bashful, shy, timid, sheepish, reserved. None of these words describe our youthful, cheerful, fun and full of life neighbor, Anne Mauriello.

I first met Anne two summers ago as she would cut thru the pool entrance to get into the clubhouse during the day to partake in various activities that she does here in Greenbriar. She was always impeccably dressed and coiffed and I often wondered how she would respond to being dumped into the pool, (which, of course, never happened).

Anne and husband Joe moved here from Oceanside, Long Island in 2004. Sadly, Joe passed away 14 years ago.

She graduated from Fort Hamilton HS in Brooklyn and when asked what her first job was after high school she ran off a list of so many occupations that I could not write them all down. She has worked in real estate, as a crossing guard and for a police department. She said she has done everything but prostitution (and then said “don’t put that in”-which of course made me put it in). She said when her children were small she worked part time and that she has worked her whole life.

She told me she never thought she would be a Jersey Girl. When she and Joe were looking around for a place to retire they visited a friend who lived here and eventually de-cided this would be the place for them. Anne is very active in Greenbriar, playing Rumikube with a group weekly in the clubhouse, helps work on the monthly Potluck dinners and is in the choir here. She also writes poetry and submits jokes to the Greenbriar Times. She was very impressed with how Greenbriar came together during Hurricane Sandy and she helped cooked for all the people here who had no power. The police department even got her a cot so she could sleep in the clubhouse which is where many residents stayed while the power was out.

Anne traveled to Italy with her sister and her daughter and niece. They went on Perrillo tours and said it was the trip of a lifetime. It was a gift from Joe for one of their many anniversaries. (As a matter of fact, this past August 29th would have been their 69th wedding anniversary.) The rest of her travels were mainly in the United States with Joe.

Anne and Joe had two children-a daughter who lives in West Long Branch and a son who lives in Brooklyn. From those two children she has 7 grandchildren and 11 great grands that range in age from 2 years old to 19!! Anne’s two children were born in December so, fittingly, Christ-mas is her favorite holiday to celebrate. She used to host in her home but with so many descendants, last christmas

her gift to them was dinner at II Boccone here in Brick for the whole family.

When I asked Anne what she wanted people to know about her she said “I am very friendly and I think I have a nice personality and I like to make people smile”. Her motto in life is “What you give is what you get”. A fitting motto for a most delightful gal.

As we were wrapping up the interview Anne had to sing me a little ditty that she wrote for the new residents that she always sings at the new resident wine and cheese party.

HI NEIGHBOR!By Anne Mauriello

Veteran’s CornerBy the time you read this, our summer concert series

will be over. They were all well-attended even though some of the Sundays were over 90 degrees! Thanks to Gail Hoadley for scheduling all the great entertainment. Thank you for your continued interest and support of the Veteran’s Association-sponsored concerts. Special thanks are also due to Lucy Perez and Bob Foster for keeping the roses and other plantings around the gazebo looking so nice. Thank you to Alice Tarlach for taking all the pictures of people at the concert.

Sadly, we announced the passing of two of our dearly beloved veteran board members this summer, Les Hoad-ley, who was largely responsible for devising the plan and implementing the fundraising to build the gazebo, and PJ Kennedy. With another of the board members moving out of the area, we are left with only two members to carry on the activities of the association. Therefore if there are any veterans who would like to step up and help us continue the meetings and programs when the clubhouse opens again, please contact Joe Castrovinvi at 201-394-1750. Without a full board, the association may cease to exist.

Submitted by Jill Holland

Veteran’s Cornerby John Whalen

on July 6, 2020 the Greenbriar community lost a giant of a man, (no pun intended). Veteran’s Association leader Les Hoadley took his last breath on planet Earth. While undergoing physical therapy at a facility in Wall Township, Les died suddenly.

At 6’8” in stature, Les was a familiar presence to the Greenbriar veterans and many of the residents. He left an indelible mark in Greenbriar. Les headed the Veteran’s Association for many years and engineered various activi-ties, including the design and construction of the lakeside gazebo. His wife, Gail, is the one who schedules all the summer concerts at the gazebo. She worked ‘behind the scenes’ for all the years the veterans had an association.

Les was drafted in 1965 and sent to Fort Jackson, NC for basic training. After basic training in the Army he was deployed to Vietnam with the famed 1st Cavalry Division, near the Demilitarized Zone. His unit survived hostile fire. Transport to Vietnam took 31 days by surface vessel. While in country, Les was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal and the Army Good conduct Medal.

A ‘small world’ story: Les’s neighbor here in Green-briar, Rhys Petty, traveled to and from Vietnam at the same time Les did!

All who knew Les will miss him.

1. Calling “shotgun” when riding in a car comes from the term “shotgun messenger” which was used to refer to the guard who sat next to the stagecoach driver. The guards would use a shotgun to keep robbers and criminals away. It made its way into society due to Hollywood’s love of western movies.

2. Forrest Fenn, an art dealer and author, hid a treasure chest in the Rocky Mountains worth over $1 million. It still has not been found.

3. After the release of the 1996 film Scream, which involved an anonymous killer calling and murdering his victims, Caller ID usage tripled in the United States.

4. Johnny Cash took only three voice lessons before his teacher advised him to stop taking lessons and to never deviate from his natural voice.

Kiwanis CornerYou might have noticed our community service project

Kiwanis Greenbriar telephone directory is missing this year, another casualty of the summer of covid. Keep your 2019- 2020 book. We will try to publish and distribute another book next year.

One of our clubs in Ormond Beach, Florida did have a service project that won a national award. The Kiwanis members of that club made it their mission to get books to the teachers and students of Ormond Beach elementary school. As part of the summer reading challenge the club donated 2319 new and gently used books. The goal was to build a culture of reading in and out of the classroom. With the use of social media along with Kiwanis branding it created community awareness and the club also gained new members. Result the Ormond Beach school finished third in the state of Florida for minutes read in the scholastic summer reading challenge.

I would also like to acknowledge the Key Club of Brick Memorial High School. They have been sending greeting cards to several members of our club during the lockdown. They just let us know what they are up to and close with some jokes. It’s a simple thing but appreciated.

We will contact members when our meetings are set to restart.

dogs have appeared in many films, TV shows and cartoons.Old English sheepdogs do require a fair amount of

exercise, especially as young dogs. Training is a must along with plenty of socialization. These dogs require a firm, patient hand and are not ideal for first-time dog owners. They are designed as serious working dogs and are happiest when they have tasks to do, be that obedience competition or herding a flock.

History:The Old English sheepdog attained its modern appear-

ance in the Devon and Somerset areas of England, but the breed probably derives at least partly from the Continental sheep herding dogs. A need in England arose about 200 years ago for a large dog capable not only of driving cattle

and sheep, but also of fending off large predators such as wolves. Since these were “working” dogs, their tails were docked or bobbed to denote their tax exemption, and hence, the nickname “bobtails.”

The Old English sheepdog had to drive animals many miles to market and developed a special gait, the amble or pace, for efficient coverage of the miles. The thick coat was easily maintained by simply shearing it off when the sheep were sheared each spring.

Old English sheepdogs are renowned for their sense of humor and have appeared in many films and television shows. “Please Don’t Eat the Daisies” starred an Old English sheepdog, and many cartoons such as “Dennis the Menace” and “For Better or For Worse” have an Old English sheepdog as a main character.

“It is wise to direct your anger toward problems, not people”. William Arthur Ward

This is a time to practice this very wise insight. It is so easy to direct our anger and frustrations at those we love, and those in close proximity to us, just because we can. But do we really want to? I believe the answer is no! It is certainly understandable that with all that we are dealing with at this time, we still do.

It would be so healthy if we could focus our energies on answers, not excuses, except right now we have no answers. We are not in control! The one thing we do have control over is how we react to everything we do not have control over. There is an old saying, “when things get tough, the tough get going”. Well, let us get going!

When we are feeling angry, the next step is feeling depressed. We do not want to go there. Even if we are directing the anger at our problems, anger is anger. Let us try a peaceful approach, which dictates “accepting what we cannot change”. We cannot change all that is happening in our country at this time, but we can change how we perceive it. “We can never make peace in the outer world, until we make peace with ourselves”. Dalai Lama. Peace is always healing. Let us also remain hopeful that all this negativity will be behind us soon. Hope always springs eternal!!

See you on the Path. Love and Peace, Anna Be well!

RESTAURANT REVIEW RIVER ROCK

Submitted by Carolyn RubinoMy friend Fay had her nephew from Holland here re-

cently and Alice and Kevin and I decided to join them for dinner one night. Pete has been enjoying dining out along the water and I needed a review, so River Rock was the agreed upon restaurant at which to dine.

It was my first time eating out since this Covid started. OOH the wait was forever. Once we were seated we relaxed with a beverage of choice: beer, wine and martinis soon relaxed us. The view, overlooking the Manasquan River, is wonderful. River Rock is a marina and we enjoyed watch-ing the boats and their owners come and go. Tables were set up and the tableware was paper with real flatware. Our waitress was very capable and sweet.

We shared two appetizers with our drinks. The first was calamari, fried in a light batter. It came with a red sauce and lemon. We enjoyed it, however the calamari could have been served hotter. The second appetizer was a standard taco. It had everything: chili, sauce, scallions, tomatoes, quaq, etc. We all enjoyed the taco.

Alice, Pete and Kevin had hamburgers for dinner. Kev-in’s was a regular burger, nothing fancy. He liked it. Pete and Alice had Smokehouse Burgers. They were Huge! The burgers had onion, cheese and bacon piled high. All three of them really liked the burgers and loved the fries. Fay had a Mahi Mahi fish taco. The fish were in soft crunchy taco shells and served in little metal trays. I also had fish. Fish and Chips to be exact. It was ok.

Of course we had dessert. Two of them to share. The first was an apple crisp served with vanilla ice cream and the second a brownie a la mode. They were both good.

I suggest River Rock would be a nice place for lunch. The prices are average for a bar, the wait staff good, the food good and the view terrific.

RECIPESA CLASSIC BOLOGNESE SAUCE

Classic Bolognese SauceThis classic Italian sauce simmers for hours to develop maximum flavor. Made with a blend of ground beef, pork,

and Italian sausage, it’s great with fresh tagliatelle or fettuccine, pappardelle, or other pasta.

carrot in sauté pan with butter and cook over medium heat until onion turns pale gold, about 10 minutes.

2 Add the meats: Add the beef, pork, and sausage to the soffritto, and cook until browned, about 5 minutes.

3 Add the tomatoes and simmer: Stir in tomatoes; in-crease the heat to bring to a simmer and then reduce the heat back to medium. Cook over medium heat for 15 minutes. If you are using whole canned tomatoes, break them up as you add them to the sauce.

4 Simmer for 2 hours: Add milk and season with sea salt. Then turn down the heat to low, partially cover, and simmer for 2 1/2 hours. Stir at least every 20 minutes.

Whenever the sauce gets too dry and starts sticking to the pan, just add 1/4 cup of water and scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.

5 Serve: Bolognese is traditionally served with fresh tagliatelle pasta, but you can also serve it with fettucine, pappardelle, penne, or other pasta. Sauce freezes well for future use.from Simply Recipes - https://www.simplyrecipes.com/

Prep time: 15 minutesCook time: 3 hours, 30 minutesYield: Sauce for 6 servings of pasta

INGREDIENTS2 ounces pancetta, finely chopped1 medium Spanish onion or yellow onion, finely chopped1 celery rib, finely chopped1 carrot, finely chopped3 tablespoons unsalted butter11 ounces ground beef4 ounces ground pork4 ounces ground Italian sausage1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper2 pounds peeled and chopped tomatoes (or one 28-ounce

can whole peeled tomatoes, packed in water)1/2 teaspoon sea salt

My favorite appetizer at the Marina Grill in Asbury Park is their Bolognese Sauce over pappardelle. It is really on their pasta list. However, whoever I’m there with and I share it as an app and then order dinner. This recipe is pretty close to the flavors in their version of this classic sauce. I tweak it a bit this way, I use the chopped meatloaf mixture

from Stop & Shop. It is beef, pork and veal. I don’t add the cinnamon and clove, or the milk. I do add Marscapone cheese at the end; it adds such a distinct flavor to the sauce. I use pappardelle too; it’s one of my favorite pastas. Now that it’s Fall and we’re homebound, why not give this dish a try some Sunday with a friend or two? Friends, a red wine, and a Bolognese over pappardelle, simply devine.

“A Twist on Blonds”Submitted by Sue Barrett

A friend told the blond man: “Christmas is on a Friday this year.”

The blond man then said, “Let’s hope it’s not the 13th.”* * *

Two blond men find three grenades, and they decide to take them to a police station.

One asked: “What if one explodes before we get there?”

The other says: “We’ll lie and say we only found two.”* * *

A woman phoned her blond neighbor man and said: “Close your curtains the next time you & your wife are having sex. The whole street was watching and laughing at you yesterday.”

To which the blond man replied: “Well the joke’s on all of you because I wasn’t even at home yesterday.”

* * *A blond man is in the bathroom and his wife shouts:

“Did you find the shampoo?”He answers, “Yes, but I’m not sure what to do... it’s

for dry hair, and I’ve just wet mine.”* * *

A blond man spies a letter lying on his doormat. It says on the envelope “DO NOT BEND”.He spends the next 2 hours trying to figure out how

to pick it up.* * *

A blond man shouts frantically into the phone“My wife is pregnant and her contractions are only

two minutes apart!”“Is this her first child?” asks the Doctor.“No!” he shouts, “this is her husband!”

* * *A blond man was driving home, drunk as a skunk.

Suddenly he has to swerve to avoid a tree, then another, then another.

A cop car pulls him over, so he tells the cop about all the trees in the road.

The cop says, “That’s your air freshener swinging about!”

* * *A blond man’s dog goes missing and he is frantic. His wife says “why don’t you put an ad in the paper?”He does, but two weeks later the dog is still missing.“What did you put in the paper?” his wife asks.“Here boy!” he replies.

* * *An Italian tourist asks a blond man: “Why do Scuba

divers always fall backwards off their boats?” To which the blond man replies: “If they fell forward, they’d still be in the boat.”

ANOTHER HOUSEHOLD HINT FROM BOBBI

A leaf of lettuce dropped into a pot of soup, gravy or stew absorbs grease from the top. Remove the lettuce and serve. You can also make soup, gravy or stew the day before, chill and scrape off the hardened fat that rises to the top.
