Weekly THURSDAY PACKET Parent Notes February 11, 2016 ~Reminder~ February Winter Recess next week have a safe, happy and healthy vacation! School resumes on Monday, February 22 nd . A Note from the Principal… St. Rocco teachers will discuss with their students the meaning of Lent. They will discuss how they can fast, pray, and give alms in special ways throughout their lives, but especially during the season of Lent. Instruction of how to prepare during Lent to celebrate the glorious Resurrection of Jesus will be discussed. Lent is a wonderful time for all of us to reflect on the unity of Christians in light of our common joy in the Resurrection. During Lent we are reminded to stop going after temporary happiness and choose lasting happiness that comes from God. A good way to teach children this idea is to use colors - one for each day of the week to represent a Lenten habit. Write the habit on the assigned colored paper and post it in a prominent place in your home. Monday --Pink for an increase in love in our hearts. We start the week by showing extra kindness to anyone we meet that day. Tuesday-Green for God's gift of creation. Try to honor all that God has given us. We do chores without being asked Wednesday-Yellow to share God's light. We spend time reading the Bible, a book on saints, or other spiritual reading. Thursday-Purple for sorrow. Help children perform an examination of conscience. Friday-Red for sacrifice in addition to abstaining from meat, give up a favorite activity, food, toy or game. Our sacrifice honors Jesus' great sacrifice on the cross. Saturday-White for joy of forgiveness. We celebrate God's unending forgiveness by forgiving anyone who has hurt us and asking for forgiveness from anyone we may have hurt. Attend confession as a family Sunday-What to give up? Help children make age appropriate choices of what to give up for Lent so that they stick with their fast for the entire season. Blessings to you and your family this Lenten Season. God Bless, Mrs. Moschella Operation Rice Bowl – Each year our school participates in “Operation Rice Bowl” for Catholic Relief Services. Your child received a rice bowl to be used to collect donations to assist the poor. Students are to return the bowls during Holy Week with their contributions and the monies collected will be added to the church’s collection. Thank you for your continued support for Catholic Relief Services. RECYCLE - Please continue to send in any size plastic shopping bags, newspaper plastic sleeves, etc. We are collecting these bags until April 22 nd . This program is a challenge to celebrate Earth Day. We are competing against other schools to collect the most plastic bags every month. The winners receive a free Trex bench or picnic table for the school. Last year, we were the regional winner; we are hoping to win for the FOURTH year in a row! GO GREEN !!! Classroom News…Mrs. Tavares ~ Prekindergarten 4-Year Old It is amazing how fast a school year goes by; we are already over half way

through the 2015-2016 school year. The Pre-K 4 class has grown since September;

we have added three new students with more showing interest every day!

We are continuing on our journey through the alphabet, we are already

working on the letter T! We are working on our number skills recognizing the numerals up to 20 and

putting them in order. We are also learning about the different parts of a book. We can identify the

front cover, the back cover, the spine or binding, the title and we know that the author writes the

words and the illustrator draws the pictures. The pre-k students are working very hard on their cutting

skills. Even though it has been a mild winter, the students have been making a blizzards worth of

snowflakes for the classroom.

The students are continuing to get ready for Kindergarten. We have been working on rhyming

words, sequencing events in a story and measuring.

After February vacation, we will learn about the weather and the different seasons and the

planets and space. The students really enjoy bring our classroom to life with stars and plants hanging

from the ceiling.
