HONOREE

Michael Skellyliving kidney donor, founder and president of Clean Line Energy, and committed community leader.

Michael and his wife, Anne Whitlock, are community leaders. Their socially conscious approach has made a meaningful and sustained impact in neighborhoods across our great city. A commitment to contribute and give back to the world around them is a fundamental characteristic reflected in each of them. This explains Michael’s immediate willingness to donate a kidney to his sister, Margaret, when she needed a life-saving transplant. Michael is the founder and president of Clean Line Energy, a company developing interstate transmission lines to connect America’s best wind energy resources to those who need it. Michael founded the company with the vision to build game changing infrastructure projects that dramatically increase America’s supply of low-cost clean energy, while creating jobs and supporting communities. Prior to founding Clean Line Energy, Michael led the development of Horizon Wind Energy from a two-person company to a leadership position in the U.S. wind industry. The American Wind Energy Association subsequently recognized Michael with the “Wind Industry Person of the Year” award in 2008. Before Horizon, Michael developed

thermal, hydroelectric, biomass and wind energy projects in Central America with Energia Global. In the early 1990’s Michael co-founded the Rain Forest Aerial Tram, a mile-long tramway system which takes visitors on an aerial tour of the rain forest in Costa Rica. In 2008, he ran for the United States Congress as the Democratic nominee in the seventh District of Texas. Michael applies his expertise in developing large-scale infrastructure to enhance transportation options and increase access to parks in Houston. In 2011, Michael co-led the “ParksByYou” campaign, which resulted in the passage of a $150 million bond measure to fund 100 plus miles of trails along the city’s bayous. Today, Michael sits on the boards of Houston Parks Board, Houston Bike Share, and the American Wind Energy Association. Michael holds a B.A. in economics from the University of Notre Dame and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. He served in the U.S. Peace Corps in Central America and speaks fluent Spanish. Michael and his wife Anne live in Firehouse No. 2, a 1910 brick fire station which they recently restored in the East End of Houston.

David “Davey Jones” Maldonado is a Houston-based artist that uses the various mediums of visual art, music and live performance to tell his story. His artwork features elements drawn from Mexican folk art and murals blended in a contemporary style. His work reflects conversations of faith, culture and pays homage to the locals that inspire him to pursue his vision.

Guillermo Cubillos has a passion for sketching pop art, portraits and children’s characters. For his earlier works, he used traditional mediums of oil and pastel, but today, digital art has become his medium of choice. His innate love of art has led to his unique interpretation of mainstream culture.

Micah Simmons (a.k.a. MICAHtheARTIST) relies on color to relate form and feeling. His story involves a lengthy and sometimes daunting path to sight as a result of three corneal transplants. The colors and loose command of flow, coupled with the influence music has in his creative process, are testament to his journey. When he is painting for an audience, he absorbs their energy, which becomes as much a part of the work as the paint and the canvas.

The Power of LIFE: Living Kidney Donor Awarenessprogram provides education on living kidney donation and empowers communities to make informed health decisions.

The Independent Living Donor Advocate (ILDA)program serves transplant centers, locally and to distant site locations via telehealth. Our licensed clinical social worker ILDAs serve to protect and promote the best interests of living donors to ensure their decision is informed and free from coercion.

The Independent Living Donor Advocate Network™ (ILDAN™)provides professional development to nurses, social workers and other ILDA health professionals in transplant centers across the nation.

The Living Bank advances living organ donation to confront the critical shortage of organs needed for life-saving transplants.

No one should die waiting for a transplant just because they did not know living kidney donation was an option. And, for the undiscovered heroes who would have donated, if only they had known, they had the power to save a life.
