Narration: “Isaiah” (CUE TRAX)

From the book of Isaiah, a prophet of God. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to Him, nothing in His appearance that we should desire Him. He was despised by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. He was pierced for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities. The punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His wounds we are healed. We all like sheep have gone astray, each one of us has turned to His own way, and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. (TORCHES ARE EXTINGUISHED TO BLACKOUT. SOLDIERS EXIT

WITH CROSS SR AISLE TO DOORS)

Stage: (OPEN CURTAINS AS NEXT NARRATION BEGINS)

Lighting: (BACKWASH WITH RED AND ORANGE TO SILHOUETTE CAST) (HALF CAST IS IN PLACE AND FROZEN AS THE “SUN RISES”)

Narration: “John The Baptist” (CUE TRAX)

(EXCITEDLY) It was Passover in Jerusalem, a time of great celebration! (VERY ANIMATED) The marketplace was filled with vendors selling their fruits and vegetables, the merchants their wares, and even with those who were selling doves for religious sacrifice. Yet in the midst of the festivities, there were those that were speaking of what was to come and calling for repentance, and to make ready for the Messiah. One such voice, who was unafraid to speak out was John the Baptist; even with the presence of the ominous Roman legions, he would still gather together all who would listen and speak out and try to warn them of what he knew was about to take place.

Lighting: (STAGE LIGHTS UP ON THE CROWD) (CROWD UNFREEZES AS LIGHTS COME UP; INTO ACTION)

Lighting: (F/S ON JOHN THE BAPTIST)

John the Baptist: (OUT FROM AMONG THE CROWD) People of God! Children of Israel! I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness...Listen to me! Change your life. God’s kingdom is here. Come with me to the Jordan River. Repent of your sins, turn to God and be baptized into a changed life. There is a new way. Salvation has come!

Townspeople: (CROWD AD-LIBS AND CALLS OUT) Are You the Messiah? Who are you? Are you the one? Are you the Christ? Etc.

John the Baptist: I am not the Christ, but after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. He is the Messiah. He is the new way. Repent, believe and be baptized, for God’s Kingdom is here! Prepare the way for the Lord! (TURNS TO PHARISEES) You brood of snakes! What do you think you’re doing slithering down here to the river? Do you think a little water on your “snakeskins” is going to make any difference? It’s

your life that must change, not your skin! I say to you, prepare the way

of the Lord! (Orchestra cue music)

Scene 2

Triumphal Entry

(CROSSING DCS TO APRON)

Mama: So another Passover.…

Nana: (INTERRUPTS) …and still you are not married my lazy grandson!

Mama: I am so tired of you hanging around the house, watching the fig tree grow!

Nana: All my friends have grandsons who are doctors..gold merchants…

Mama: But me? I get a professional fig tree watcher.

Nana: Oi vay, how can you raise your son in such a way?

Mama: Me? He takes after his Zayde. How many years did it take him to finally find a job? (HYMIE IS MIMICKING MAMA & NANA)

Nana: Too many! But today Hymie is a special day and the market place is filled with beautiful unmarried maidens.

Mama: And this year, I’ve done it...I’ve really done it!! Mama has found you a wife, Hymie!

Nana: And she’s gorgeous and she even owns her own business!

Hymie: (ROLLING EYES) Oi-vay! Here we go again

Mama: No, no, trust me! I did...look!

Nana: Yes, look!

Hymie: I’m looking! I’m looking! What exactly am I looking at?

Mama: (POINTING OFF S/L SMILING) Her. Your future wife.

Hymie: Her? You’ve got to be kidding! Mama, she’s so old. (PAUSE) When she was born, the Dead Sea was still alive!

Nana: Do you have a problem with old?

Hymie: Well, when she’s as old as Methuselah, how can I not?

Mama: (IN DISGUST) HYMIE!!! I raised you better than that!

Hymie: Mama, day after day for the past year, all I’ve heard is find a wife, get married, give you grandchildren.

Nana: (INTERRUPTS) And GREAT Grandchildren..

Hymie: Well, let me tell you, I found the woman I want to marry and I did it without either of your help!

Mama: (LAUGHING) You? You found a wife? Without my help??

Nana: (LAUGHING) And just where is this Flower of The Desert?

Hymie: (SMUGLY) Right there! (POINTS DS. AND WAVES AT HER AND BLOWS A KISS)

Nana: Her? Miss Kosher Dill Pickle? She’s too skinny! And those clothes! Where does she buy her clothes? Last Chance of Jerusalem?

Mama: No, no! Not for you! You need someone with class and charm...a pleasant disposition. You know...someone like “your mother!”

Nana: And your Nana!

Hymie: (EYES HEAVENWARD TO GOD) Excuse me, if You have a minute? I know You said to honor my Mother, but take a look at this Mother You gave me. She is no Queen of Sheba! And don’t even get me started on my Nana!

Nana: Yada, yada, yada! She’s not for you! The answer is NO!

Mama: Now do what I say. Stand up straight! (HYMIE WILL BE MAKING WEIRD FACES AND POSITIONS)

Nana: Shoulders back!

Mama: Stomach in!

Nana: (LOOKS HIM OVER) Oi, a Sampson you’re not!

Mama: Now Hymie, let’s have your best handsome face. (HYMIE MAKES A FUNNY FACE)

Nana: That’s it!? That’s your best handsome face? (HE NODS) Then don’t make it. You’ll scare the humps off the camel!

Hymie: Nag, nag, nag! If Moses was wandering in the desert with these women for 40 years, he would have gone back to Egypt!

Nana: And you are harder to get rid of than all the plagues God put on Egypt!

Hymie: (SAD FACE) Why are you always picking at me? You know how sensitive I am. Besides, I thought you loved me?

Mama: (WALKING TO HIM, PATS HIS CHEST) (SOFTER) We do love you Hymie! (HYMIE SMILES)

Nana: You’re a good boy. (HYMIE SMILES BIGGER)

Mama: And that face, I love that face. (SHAKING HIS FACE BACK AND

FORTH) (TO AUDIENCE) Only a mother could love that face. (SHE LAUGHS BECAUSE SHE GOT HIM AGAIN) (LOOKING UP TO HEAVEN) We’re gonna need some help here!

Nana: (GETS AND IDEA) Hymie! Jesus will be here today! (SOFTER AND SWEETER) They say He is our Messiah.

Mama: (EXCITEDLY). Hymie, maybe Jesus could find you a wife! Come on!

Nana: Come along!!

Blessed are the humble, for they will inherit the whole earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say

all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad

because great is your reward in heaven. And when you pray,

remember that God is your Father in heaven. (Orchestra cue music)

Accused Woman: Let me go! Let me go! No...! I am innocent!

Pharisee #2: Teacher! Yesterday you came and, as you said, “cleansed” the temple, and then said you would destroy this temple and raise it up in three days! Your teachings are confusing for the people. Now, we bring you this woman, caught in the very act of adultery. There isn’t a vow she hasn’t broken. So, we ask you - the Law of Moses commands us to stone such a woman - what do you say?

(DURING DIALOGUE JESUS MOVES TO DCS APRON AND KNEELS DOWN AND WRITES IN SAND)

Pharisees: (AD LIB CONTINUE QUESTIONING JESUS)

Jesus: (STANDING UP) All right, but let the one who has never sinned go first. Throw the stone at her. (JESUS KNEELS AGAIN AND WRITES IN THE SAND) (PHARISEES ONE BY ONE, OLDEST FIRST BEGIN TO SLOWLY EXIT

John: Master, your teachings are not like anything that we have been taught. You must be careful of the Pharisees. (JESUS STANDS AND TURNS TO JOHN)

Jesus: John, this is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed. You see by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn’t go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again. (MORE SOFTLY) Those who believe in Him are not condemned, only those who chose not to believe.

Woman #3: Please, we must talk to him right away.

Women &

Children: (INFORMALLY RESPONDING ALL AT ONCE) I want my children blessed by Jesus...I want to talk to Jesus...We’re here to see Jesus...I wanna see Him...

Jesus: (SEEING THE COMMOTION, JESUS PUTS UP HIS HAND AS IF TO SAY “STOP”) Hey, hey now! John, what’s going on here?

John: (PUZZLED HIMSELF BY THE SUDDEN COMMOTION) Lord, we tried to tell them that you are very, very busy and to come back later but they refuse to listen.

Jesus: John, don’t stop them! Let the children come to me, for God’s Kingdom belongs to those who are like these little ones.

John: That’s what I was saying, Lord. (TO TOWNSPEOPLE) Come on! Bring them...bring the children! (DISCIPLES STAND BACK ALLOWING THE CHILDREN TO COME TO JESUS)

(JESUS AND CHILDREN CROSS DCS TO APRON)

Jesus: Come on kids. God bless you! (GATHERS CHILDREN AROUND HIM) Bless you, my child...Bless all of you dear children. (DISCIPLES AND MOTHERS MOVE BACKWARDS SLIGHTLY, GIVING STAGE AREA TO JESUS AND CHILDREN.)

Jacob: (RUNNING TO JESUS) Save me, Jesus, save me!

Jesus: (TO JACOB) Whoa there! Who’s after you...Roman soldiers?

Jacob: No! Worse! Those girls...they’re always chasing me and I don’t even like girls.

Jesus: (LAUGHING) Well, I think that will change someday.

Ruth: When I grow up I wanna be just like Ruth!

Jesus: Ruth? Why Ruth?

Ruth: Ruth is who I was named after. She was the grandmother of David and was a kindhearted woman who loved people and worked hard gathering grain in the field to feed them. I wanna be that kind of woman when I grow up.

Jesus: That’s wonderful. Anybody else? (CHILDREN RAISE HANDS AND AD LIB “TEACHER ME..ETC”)

Jesus: (TO NOAH) How about you?

Noah: I like to dream that I’m King Solomon and that someday I’ll be just like him.

Jesus: King Solomon, now I know why I love him but why do you love him?

Noah: He was the wisest King in all the land, and God blessed him with riches and fame.

Jesus: And I think you could be a wise King someday as well. (BENJAMIN STANDS UP. TWO GIRLS STAND ON EACH SIDE OF HIM)

Benjamin: What good is wisdom when you can have super strength. I wanna be just like Samson.

Jacob: Jesus, I still have nightmares about the night the bad people came and took my family away. I dream that one day God will bring my family back to me.

Jesus: (EMBRACES HIM AND PRAYS) Father as he speaks, let it be so.

Samuel: Jesus, my friends are always teasing me ‘cause I’m afraid of the dark and can’t sleep at night.

Noah: Well, what about me...those big, old Roman soldiers, with their swords and spears are really scary!

All Kids: And they’re everywhere!

Jacob: Not as scary as a bad dream! So there!

The Dock

Narration: “The Dock” (CUE TRAX)

Everyone throughout the land was talking about this man, called Jesus. Just who was He?...Prophet? King? Imposter? The long awaited Messiah? Beside the Sea of Galilee, His friends pondered the words of this Teacher who occupied their every waking thoughts. Into the night and next day, while mending their nets, casting their lines or catching some sleep, these fishermen could not stop thinking or talking about this Man Jesus. They were about to have a date with destiny. Heaven was about to reveal to them the Messiah.

Lighting: (BLUE DOCK LIGHTS UP)

SFX: (STOP FOG ON APRON “DOCK“) (PETER SITS MENDING NETS)

Peter: Mending nets again...you’d think I was the only one who knew how to do this! (FRUSTRATED)

James: I can’t believe I ate the whole thing! (OBVIOUSLY BILIOUS WITH HEARTBURN)

John: Com’on James. We’ve got to help Simon get the nets mended.

James: I think I’m going to be sick! (STILL IN PAIN)

John: What are you talking about?

James: The leftovers from feeding the 5,000.

Peter: You ate all the leftovers???

James: Well, excuse me for being hungry!

John: There were 7 baskets of bread and fish left over!

James: Don’t remind me!

Peter: Look at all this work we have to do. Would you just look at all these nets. How are we going to keep this business going if you let our nets have holes big enough for whales to swim through?

John: Someone around here needs to think of something else other than nets and fish, fish and nets.

Peter: Well, I care about feeding our family.

John: So do I Simon, but I can’t stop thinking of this man, Jesus; and all the miracles He’s done. He said He’d make me a fisher of men!

James: Just what exactly does that mean, John?

John: (PUZZLED) I have no idea!

Peter: I can’t believe that you said you mended this net. Will you just look at this hole! It’s as big as the one in your head.

John: Simon, if your tongue got any sharper, we could use it to harpoon the fish.

James: (TO JOHN) Oh yeah, we’d probably have to with the way you fix nets!

John: (TO JAMES) That’s all you ever do is complain. I’ve been thinking about Jesus. I think He wants me to follow Him.

Peter: If both of you would just finish your work, we could go and eat.

James: (TO PETER) You just stay out of this, Simon! (TO JOHN) Wants you

to follow Him John, ha! Hellooo! What do you see here?

John: Holes? Big ones and little ones. (POINTS TO JAMES’ HEAD)

Peter: Well, I care about eating...(JOHN INTERRUPTS)

John: (SARCASTICALLY) Now there’s an original idea. I wish I would’ve thought of that.

James: (TO PETER & JOHN) Come on guys! I’ve had just about enough of your attitudes!

Peter: (GETS IN JAMES’ FACE) If you would just keep that hot air inside, maybe we wouldn’t have all these bad storms on the Sea of Galilee!

Peter: Lord, it’s so good to see you!

John: We were just talking about all the people You have touched …

James: …and how their lives have been changed.

Jesus: (SMILING) Really now? (SERIOUS) And who do people say that I am?

John: Some say You are John The Baptist or Elijah.

James: And others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.

Jesus: But who do you say that I am?

Peter: (WITH REVELATION) You are the Christ. (JESUS TURNS TO PETER AND PUTS HIS HAND ON HIS SHOULDER)

Jesus: You are blessed Simon son of Jonah, because you didn’t get that answer from books or teachers. But God himself, let you in on this secret of who I really am. And now I’m going to tell you who you are, really are. You may be a fisherman by trade but now You are called Peter, a rock. And this is the rock on which I will put together my church, a church so powerful that not even the powers of hell will be able to conquer it. Peter, James, John…Lay down your nets. I’ll make you fishers of men. Come, follow Me.

Narration: “Well” (CUE TRAX) It was close to the sixth hour, about noon. A Samaritan woman made her way toward the town well. It was an hour when other women stayed away because of the heat. She chose this hour so she could avoid their accusing glances and condemning remarks, because the townspeople never cared for her nor accepted her. Though the well was a sacred place, she was still a despised Samaritan.

Lighting: (FRONT STAGE LIGHTS UP AS SHE HITS THE STAGE. FADE AISLE LIGHTS OUT)

Jesus: Excuse me, would you give me a drink of water please?

Woman: (STOPS, SURPRISED) I beg your pardon? How come you, a Jew, are asking me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink? Jews never have anything to do with Samaritans.

Jesus: If you knew the generosity of God and who I am, you would be asking me for a drink, and I would give you fresh, living water.

Woman: Sir, you don’t even have a bucket to draw with, and this well is deep. So how are you going to get this ‘living water’? Are you a better man than our Father Jacob, who dug this well and drank from it himself?

Jesus: Everyone who drinks this water will get thirsty again and again. But anyone who drinks the water I give will never thirst—not ever.

Woman: Well then please sir, give me this water. Then I’ll never be thirsty again, and I won’t have to keep coming here to draw water.

Jesus: You’re right! You don’t have a husband, for you have had five husbands, and you aren’t even married to the man you’re living with now.

Woman: Sir, how can you possibly know these things? I’ve never even seen you before, but I’ve heard the stories about the Messiah, the One they call Christ. They say that when He comes, He will tell us everything. (IT OCCURS TO HER) Are You the Messiah?

Jesus: I am the Messiah. You don’t have to wait any longer or look any further.

Woman: (KNEELING) Oh master, Lord, (SOFTLY) have mercy and forgive me for I am a sinner. And please, give me this living water You spoke of!!!

Jesus: My daughter, not only are your sins forgiven, but the water I now give will be a bubbling spring within you, gushing fountains of endless life.

Old Man: (DRAGGING IN) It’s no wonder Hymie ran away! Year after year after year, all you two ever do is nag him to find a wife! I can’t figure out why he hasn’t found a wife...such a handsome boy! And that face...oh, that face...such a handsome face!

(SHE CROSSES TO CS)

Nana: Yeah that face...why couldn’t he take after my side of the family!

Old Man: Nagging, nagging...that’s all I ever get from you! I’m not carrying these water pots anymore! It’s not my job...I’m the head of this family and that’s woman’s work! (HE STOPS AND SETS DOWN WATER POTS)

Nana: You’ll do exactly what I always tell you to do! If I don’t find Hymie and get him married, I’m never going to have any great grandchildren!

Old Man: That might be a good thing...they could all take after you!

Nana: I‘ve had it! I‘m going to the marketplace to find Hymie. You take those water pots to the upper room and begin preparing it for the Passover!

Peter: (SADDENED & CONFUSED) I, I don’t understand.

James: Lord, how can this be?

Jesus: Whoever eats this crust of bread after I’ve dipped it. (DIPS THE BREAD AND WALKS TOWARDS JUDAS) For the Son of Man must die, as the Scriptures declared long ago. But how terrible it will be for the one who betrays him. It would be far better for that man if he had never been born.

Judas: (ADAMANT; SHAKING HEAD) I will not! (WITH ANGUISH) I will not betray you! (JESUS PUTS THE BREAD IN HIS MOUTH; PLACE HIS HAND ON JUDAS’ CHEEK)

(JUDAS EXITS BSR)

Jesus: (RETURNS TO CENTER OF TABLE) I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples when I have gone.

Disciples: (ADAMANT; AD-LIB) I will lay down my life for you…Master, I will die for you…I will sacrifice my life for yours, Lord…Yes Lord!…Yes Master!…Let us come with you, Lord…

Jesus: Really? You’ll die for me?

Peter: Yes, I will die for you!

Jesus: Satan has tried his best to separate all of you from me. But I’ve prayed for you in particular, Peter, that your faith should not fail. So when you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen your brothers.

Peter: Master, I’m ready for anything with you. I’d go to prison for you. I’d die for you!

James: There is nothing I wouldn‘t do for You!

John: Lord, we all feel that way about you.

Disciples: (ADAMANT; AD-LIB) Yes, I would die for you….I”ll go to prison for you…I feel the same way, Lord….Master you have to believe us… I will do anything for you, Lord…

Jesus: (TO PETER) Peter, let me tell you something. The truth is, before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know Me.

Peter: (EMPHATICALLY) No! Even if I have to die with You, I will never deny You!

Disciples: (ADAMANT; AD-LIB) Never!…No Lord, I will never deny you! I will die for you!…Noooooooo!…No Master!

Jesus: You’re all going to feel that your world is falling apart and that it’s my fault. Don’t let this throw you. You trust God, don’t you? (DISCIPLES RESPOND WITH ADLIBS OF “YES”) Then trust me. You’ve no idea how much I have looked forward to eating this Passover meal with you. (ALL LIFT HANDS AS JESUS BLESSES FOOD). We thank You, Lord by Whose word everything comes to be. Amen

Scene 9

Peter’s Denial

Lighting: (SL NIGHT LIGHTS FADE IN)

Narration: “Denial” (CUE TRAX) In the courtyard shadows below the trial, Peter sat warming himself by the fire. This had been a night of fear and confusion. Peter, impetuous, yet called the “rock”, was shaken. His devotion to Jesus was not sufficient to overcome His human fears. And now he hid in the shadows, afraid to speak up for his Lord, fearful of everything that was taking place. (THEY PANTOMIME DURING ALL OF SCENE 9)

(MAID OF THE HIGH PRIEST ENTERS FROM BSL AND OFFERS BREAD AND WATER TO THE SOLDIERS. SHE LOOKS AT PETER CLOSELY)

Servant Girl: (LOOKING PETER OVER) You look familiar. You’re not one of that man’s disciples, are you?

Peter: No, I’m sorry. I don’t know what you’re talking about. (Cue trax)

Sound Effects: “Rooster Crow” (CUE TRAX)

Servant Girl: (TO THE SOLDIERS) This man was one of Jesus’ followers! I am sure of it. Why is he here at your fire?

Peter: (OVERHEARING HER REMARKS) Woman, I don’t even know the man!

Servant Girl: I know I saw you in the garden with Him. You must be one of them. (TURNING TO OTHERS) I can tell by his accent, this man is from Galilee.

(PETER MOVES AWAY FROM THE OTHERS CROSSING SR)

Peter: You are wrong! Out of your minds! I have never laid eyes on this man you’re talking about.

(JESUS HAS BEEN LED SL BY SOLDIERS. PETER’S BACK IS TO JESUS)

Peter: A curse on me if I’m lying! I tell you I don’t know this man Jesus! (Cue trax)

Scene 10

Pilate and Procula (PILATE, PROCULA, AND SERVANT BOYS ENTER FROM BSR AND SET DURING NARRATION)

Narration: “Pilate” (CUE TRAX) The appearance of the Roman governor, Pontius Pilate, put the surrounding sentries on alert. Jesus had disturbed the traditions that surrounded the commandments of God. That is why the Jewish leaders were against Him. Herod, King of the Jews, had refused to try Jesus and threw the problem back into the court of Rome. Jesus didn’t seem like a troublemaker, yet Pilate was nervous. In his heart, he knew it was not lawful to put an innocent man to death.

Lighting: (LIGHTS UP ON PILATE’S COURT)

Procula: Pilate, I must speak to you.

Pilate: Not now Procula! I’m preparing for the trial of that man, Jesus, the one who is causing the uprising among the Jews.

Procula: That’s why I am here. Please have nothing to do with that man. He is innocent.

Pilate: I know he is, but I must protect Rome and the Emperor.

Procula: You mean you must protect your position.

Pilate: Yes...that is part of it.

Procula: Please...I have suffered so much because of a terrible dream about this man, Jesus...Pilate...I beg of you...do not condemn Him, His blood will be on your hands!

Pilate: I understand you, but I also understand Caesar as well. I must think of you...of me.

Procula: Pilate, you’re wrong...please remember what I said.

(PILATE FALLS INTO HIS THRONE. PROCULA EXITS BSR. PILATE IS SEATED ON HIS THRONE IN THOUGHTFUL POSE)

Pilate: (MOTIONING TO SERVANT BOY) Let them in!

Narration: “Trial” (CUE TRAX) The ever present angry and condemning crowd had made their way to the trial of Jesus. Pilate was concerned. His impressive job was at stake. This was no ordinary trial. This was the greatest dilemma of his career. Pilate grimaced at his options. Who was speaking the truth? For that matter what was the truth.

Lighting: (LIGHTS UP ON STAGE)

Pilate: You brought this man to me, accusing him of leading a revolt. I have examined him thoroughly on this point in your presence and find him innocent. Because He was a Galilean, He was sent to Herod Antipas, who also came to the same conclusion and sent him back to us. It’s clear that he’s done nothing wrong, let alone anything deserving death. Therefore, I will punish him and then I will release him.

Crowd: (Scream) Crucify Him! …Kill Him…No do not release Him…

Caiaphas: We wouldn’t have handed him over to you if he weren’t a criminal!

Pilate: What charge do you bring against this man?

Caiaphas: He has spoken blasphemy calling Himself the Messiah, the Son of God!

Pilate: I find Him not guilty. You take him. You crucify him.

Pharisee #1: We have a law, and by that law he must die because he claims to be the Son of God.

Pharisee #2: We are not allowed to kill. Only the Romans are permitted to execute someone.

Pilate: But I found Him innocent of any charge that deserves death!

Crowd: (Scream) Crucify Him! …Kill Him…Blasphemer…Traitor

Caiaphas: We found this man undermining our law and order.

Pilate: (HOLDING UP HIS HAND TO SILENCE THE CROWD) Quiet!! (TO JESUS) Speak Galilean! Are You the King of The Jews?

Jesus: Are you saying this on your own, or did others tell you this about me?

Pilate: Do I look like a Jew? Your people and your high priests turned you over to me. So, Are you a king or not?

Jesus: My kingdom is not of this world.

Pilate: Not of this world? Then where are You from? (PAUSE) You refuse to speak to me? (PAUSE) Don’t you realize that I have the power to either release you or crucify you?

Jesus: You would have no power over me at all unless it were given to you from above. (LOOKS TOWARDS PHARISEES) So the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.

Crowd: (Scream) Crucify Him! Crucify Him!!! He deserves death. He’s a blasphemer! Traitor! Etc...

Pilate: Understand clearly that I find him not guilty. I intend to release this Man.

Crowd: (Scream) No!…Don’t release Him!…He must die!…Crucify Him!

After confirming that Jesus was dead, Pilate gave Joseph permission to take the body. And Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes. So they took the body of Jesus, and wrapped it in strips of linen with the spices, as was Jewish custom. Now in the place where He was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. So they laid the body of Jesus in the fresh tomb and rolled a large stone against the door and then departed.

Resurrection (DURING NARRATION, SOLDIERS ENTER FROM REAR DOORS AND MARCH UP AND DOWN AISLES WITH TORCHES AND SWORDS ACCOMPANIED BY A GUARD DOG. THEY MAKE THEIR WAY TO THE TOMB WHERE THEY ARE POSITIONED TO GUARD IT)

Narration: “Roman Soldiers” (CUE TRAX) Roman soldiers patrolled the streets that night and could be heard marching by the houses with their armor clanking and their footsteps heavy on the cobblestones. Their torches spread and eerie light in the darkness heightening the tragedy and fear that already permeated the day. The Roman soldiers were anxious as they bullied their way through Jerusalem’s streets, unnerved by reports of dead saints rising from their opened graves at the hour of Christ’s death and appearing to many in the holy city.

Lighting: (NIGHT LIGHTS UP ON TOMB)

(PHARISEES & CAIAPHAS ENTER FROM BSL TO TOMB. TOGETHER WITH THE ROMAN SOLDIERS THEY WORK AT THE EDGES OF THE STONE DOOR SECURING ITS MOVEMENT. THE

PHARISEES AND GUARDS INTERACT. PHARISEES EXIT BSL. GUARDS SETTLE IN) Pilate had ordered that a guard be set at the tomb where Jesus was laid. The Pharisees had warned Pilate of Christ’s words that after three days, He would rise. So, Pilate commanded the tomb be made secure lest His disciples come and steal Him away. And so the Pharisees went with the soldiers and made the tomb secure, sealing the stone, and setting the guard. The tomb was militarily protected and the twenty-four watches totally secured and cordoned off the area...while the city tried to sleep. The scene on that black Friday was failure. However, three days later everything changed!

Early in the morning, while it was still dark, Mary made her way to the tomb only to discover that the stone had been rolled away and that it was empty. She stood there alone weeping outside of the tomb. What had they done with the body of her Lord? Then Jesus appeared to her and told her to “Go and tell the disciples” that she had seen and witnessed the living Lord! Christ took the cross and used it as a bridge to unite man with God. Stage: (CURTAINS OPEN DURING NARRATION)

SFX: (PUMP BOAT FOG)

Narration: “Fishing” (CUE TRAX) After the resurrection, Jesus appeared to His followers and believers many times. He spoke with them, walked with them, comforted them, He even ate with them. On one such occasion, several of the disciples had been fishing all night long on the Sea of Tiberias, but without success. As morning approached, they were discouraged and tired, so they began to haul in their nets and head for shore.

Peter: Brothers, it’s only been a few days since He appeared to us in the Upper Room. Remember what He said?

John: Let’s just pull up our nets and go home.

James: I want so much to see Jesus again.

Peter: He will come...but in His time...He will come. (JUST AS THEY BEGIN, JESUS APPEARS. THE DISCIPLES DON’T RECOGNIZE HIM AT FIRST)

Lighting: (F/S ON JESUS)

Jesus: No, no, my friend. The time for fishing has just begun!

Peter: (TO THE OTHER DISCIPLES - UPSET) Now that just irks me to no end. Here comes this guy and He’s standing on shore while we’re all here in the water fishing, and He’s telling me where to fish!

John: He does sound like He knows what He is talking about.

James: What have we got to lose, Peter? Let’s humor Him.

Peter: Okay, okay. We’ll put the nets down on the right side of the boat. Then I’m going to row ashore and tell this guy a thing or two! Why, the very idea of Him telling us where to fish! (THEY THROW THE NETS OVER, RELUCTANTLY, HALF IN JEST. SUDDENLY THINGS BEGIN TO HAPPEN. PETER IS SCOWLING, NOT LOOKING OVER THE SIDE)

John: Peter! Peter! Look at this!

Peter: What? What?

James: Quick! Pull them up!

Peter: There are so many fish! I hope we can pull them up!

John: Peter, that is no ordinary Man! That is our Lord!

Peter: (IT SINKS IN WHO THAT PERSON IS) It is our Lord!

Jesus: Come my children! Bring the fish you have caught.

Peter: Come on guys! It’s not that deep!

(DISCIPLES HEAD ACROSS TO DCS. JESUS DOES THE SAME)

Disciples: (THE DISCIPLES HUG JESUS) (AD-LIBBING) It’s so good to see You! Master! We’ve missed You! Etc.

Peter: Jesus, I can’t believe it’s you! You’re alive!

Jesus: Peter?

Peter: Yeah?

Jesus: Do you love me more than these others do?

Peter: Of course I love you! You’re alive! This is so great!

Jesus: Then feed my sheep.

Peter: (TO JAMES) James, can you believe this? He is alive!

Jesus: Peter?

Peter: Yeah?

Jesus: Do you love me?

Peter: I love you! Yes! And I’m so sorry about that rooster clucking. I had no idea what that meant but I do now and I’m better for it.

Jesus: Then feed my sheep.

Peter: (TO JOHN) John, it really is Jesus standing right here with us!

Jesus: Peter?

Peter: Yes?

Jesus: Do you love me?

Peter: (WITH EMOTION) Jesus, mere words cannot describe the passion that I have for you. I love you. You know everything. I love you.

Jesus: Good. Then feed my sheep.

Peter: I didn’t even know you had livestock. That is so like You though. There’s something new about you all the time. That’s what I love about You.

Jesus: Peter, do you remember the morning the ladies went to the tomb?

Peter: Yeah, yeah, yeah! We were all in the upper room trying to figure out what to do next because we thought You were dead. Then Mary comes running up yelling, “He’s alive! He’s alive!” And then we asked her, “Who’s alive? Who’s alive?” And she said she was at the tomb and the tomb was empty and that there was an angel there and the angel said, “Go tell the disciples and Peter that everything is ok. He is risen.” And so me and John high tail it down there to the tomb. (LOOKS AT JOHN) John says he beat me, (LOOKS AT JESUS) but he is totally lying, because I beat him. Alright?

John: You’ve got it all wrong Peter! I was the first one to arrive…..

Peter: (CUTS JOHN OFF) So anyway, we get down there and I’m looking in

that tomb and it is…it is empty! There is nothing in there and I’m thinking, “What does this mean? What does this mean?” And John is right there. John is soooo good with words. (TO JOHN) You know, you really should write a book. You are soooo good with words.

John: Then I told him, “Don’t you get it, Peter? This is everything Jesus said he was going to do.”

Peter: (TO JESUS) And You did and it’s done! And now You’re here with us again.

Jesus: Wait. The angel said what?

Peter: Uhh, “Go tell the disciples and Peter that everything is ok. He is risen.” and You have risen.

Jesus: He said what?

Orchestra: “I Will Be Faithful Underscore”

Peter: “Go tell the disciples and Pe…(PAUSE; HE REALIZES WHAT JESUS IS TRYING TO GET HIM TO UNDERSTAND) go and tell the disciples and Peter.” You said my name. Why did you say my name?

Jesus: Peter, that’s grace.

Peter: No. No, I don’t deserve that, because that night people kept coming up to me asking me if I was with you…if I belonged to you. And I kept denying you left and right. It’ll take my whole life to make up for what I did. It was unforgivable what I did.

Jesus: No, no. (SHOWS PETER HIS HANDS) What I did on the cross was to take what was unforgivable and make it forgivable. That’s my grace, Peter.

He had spent these last days with His disciples opening their understanding so that they would comprehend all the truth and prophecy of the scriptures. Then, at last, He took the eleven that had been with Him from the beginning and led them out to Bethany.

Jesus: I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. Go into the world. Go everywhere and preach the Message of God’s good news to everyone. You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach them to obey all the commands I have given you. These are some of the signs that will accompany believers: They will cast out demons in My name, they will speak in new languages, they will be able to handle snakes with safety, and if they drink anything poisonous, it won’t hurt them, they will lay hands on the sick and they will be healed. And be sure of this: (Timpani roll) (Raise Jesus) I am with you always, even to the end of the age!
