Sign of the Cross and Greeting

Bishop The grace and peace of God be with all of you in his holy Church. All And with your spirit.

Blessing and Sprinkling of Water

Bishop God of mercy…Bless + this water and sanctify it... We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord.

All Amen.

River of Glory Chant during the Sprinkling

The bishop greets the people.

Then the bishop addresses the people briefly.

The bishop sprinkles the

assembly and the building

with baptismal water.

The place for baptism

and the font has been

placed at the entrance of

the church, an ancient

practice which recalls that

baptism is the doorway to

all the sacraments; indeed,

to Christ himself.

Bishop Pates invites the people to pray in silence for a brief period. Then, he continues with

the blessing of water:

When all are standing in their places, the bishop says from the chair:

Bishop May God, the Father of mercies . . . for we are the temple of his presence. All Amen.

All who are able remain

standing.

The assembly then sings

the ancient hymn of the

Church, which begins

with the song of the

angels at the birth of Jesus

(c.f. Luke 2:14).

Collect

Gloria (concluded) The Collect is so named

because the bishop’s

invitation, “Let us pray,”

is an opportunity for each

of us to silently call to

mind our own prayers at

the beginning of Mass.

We unite our prayers with

the prayer of the Church

said by the bishop.

Rite of Dedication of the Altar Invitation to Prayer

Litany of the Saints

All who are able remain

standing to sing the

Litany of the Saints, the

custom when it is sung

during the Easter Season.

We invite the prayers of

the saints, as we dedicate

this place to the worship

of God. We believe that

we share a communion

with those who die in the

Lord (c.f. Hebrews 12:1).

Like asking for a friend or

family member’s prayers,

the tradition of singing

the litany of the saints is

used on many other

significant liturgies,

including the sacraments

of initiation and vocation.

The sprinkling of the

people, the chapel walls,

and the altar, and the rites

of dedication and blessing

which are soon to follow

evoke the imagery of

Christian initiation.

The church is designed so

that the altar is its central

focus, with the assembly

“gathered round God’s

altar in love” (words

spoken earlier in this

liturgy).

Prayer of Dedication

The bishop invites the people to pray, and all sing the Litany of the Saints.

At the end of the litany, the bishop offers a concluding prayer,

to which all respond, “Amen.”

Standing at the altar, the bishop prays the prayer of dedication,

to which all respond, “Amen.”

Anointing of the Altar The Sacred Chrism is only

used in four liturgies of

the Roman Catholic

Church: baptism,

confirmation, the

ordination of priests and

bishops, and this rite of

dedication of an altar.

The People of God are

incensed at the end of this

rite, a reminder that this

holy place is not the

Church but rather houses

it:

“...and, like living stones,

let yourselves be built into

a spiritual house to be a

holy priesthood to offer

spiritual sacrifices

acceptable to God through

Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 2:5).

Bishop Pates anoints the altar with the Sacred Chrism, a reminder that this primary symbol

is a symbol of Christ and his priestly, prophetic, and royal identity—an identity shared by

all the baptized.

The people sing this Psalm of praise, the Church’s anthem during the Easter Season and

this festive day.

Antiphon Psalm 145: I Will Praise Your Name

A bowl of incense is placed on the altar, and the bishop prays that God’s Church may “fill

the world with the fragrance of Christ.”

The bishop incenses the altar. Then, the deacon incenses the bishop and the people of God,

reverencing these visible signs of Christ’s presence as all sing a refrain from Psalm 145.

Lighting of the Altar

Members of the parish prepare the altar with a cloth, flowers, and unlit candles. The

Paschal (Easter) Candle is lit as a connection with Christian initiation. Fire from the

Paschal Candle is then brought to the bishop. The bishop receives the light and prays that

the light of Christ may “shine forth in the Church.”

Then the candles at the altar are lit. All join in singing:

Liturgy of the Eucharist

Bishop Pates Pray, brothers and sisters...to God, the almighty Father. All May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church.

Prayer over the Offerings

Eucharistic Prayer

Preface Dialogue and Preface

Bishop Pates The Lord be with you. All And with your spirit. Bishop Pates Lift up your hearts. All We lift them up to the Lord. Bishop Pates Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right and just.

The pinnacle of the liturgy

begins as together the

People of God celebrate

the Lord’s one sacrifice at

his altar.

The Sanctus, a musical

cornerstone of ancient

Christian worship, quotes

Isaiah’s vision of the

throne of God (Isaiah 6:3)

and the entrance of Jesus

into Jerusalem (Matthew

21:9).

After the Sanctus, all who

are able may kneel. Those

who do not kneel may be

seated.

Once the candles are lit, a collection is taken up to help those who are in need and the work

of the parish. Then the gifts of bread and wine are brought to the altar. The celebration of

the Eucharist proceeds in the usual manner. When the gifts and altar are prepared, all who

are able stand and the bishop invites all to prayer:
