However, a surprising 20% of those surveyed admitted that they do not trash over-the-counter or pre- scription medications even when they realize that the products are ex- pired. The survey was conducted over the telephone with 1,013 adults earlier this year. Almost three in four Americans reported having cleaned out their medicine cabinet or shelf in the past year. Over 80% of women were more likely to have done so than 65% of the men. Almost half of thiose responding claimed to have checked the expiration date before tak ing an over the counter medicine while just under a third sometimes cho eked when they remembered to do so. When it came to prescription drugs, 57% of people said they always checked expiration dates while 20% checked only when they remembered. Almost 20% of those sur- veyed never checked the expiration date on the drugs. Keeping all medicines in their original containers with clearly readable dates, names, and strengths can make spring-cleaning your medicine cabinet easier. April 17,2004 Two years later, she was named to the committee to produce a 100th an- niversary book for the church, and she taught herself how to do research at the courthouse and in archives. The book came out in 1982 and sold out. In 1984, her commitment to com- munity service was recognized when the Texas Agriculture Extension Ser- vice of the Texas A&M University Sys- tem named her Outstanding Older Texan Woman of Colorado County. Her husband passed away in 1989. For the next seven years, she diligently worked on historical projects at the Nesbitt Memorial Library, helping to locate and catalogue cemeteries, ar- ranging for and helping to effect the microfilming of the records of Nada's Catholic church, pouring through countless old newspapers and extract- ing obituary information, and many other things. She was certainly the most faithful and effective volunteer the li- brary had during the 1990s. During these years, she became a member of the Colorado County His- torical Commission, the German Texan Heritage Society and the Live Oak Art Center. She had earlier been a member of the El Campo VFW Ladies Auxil- iary, National Catholic Woman's Union and the Nada-Garwood Homemakers Extension Club. She had to abandon her volunteer activities when her kidneys failed and she went on dialysis in early 1997. A few months later, she moved to Waco, where one of her daughters lived and where she could undergo her treat- ments more comfortably. In Waco, she produced two books. She was princi- pal compiler of Christian Leopold: "Der Swithe Boob," a book of family history, which was published in 2000. In 2002, she completed an autobiogra- phy, My Life. She was buried at St. Mary's Catho- lic Cemetery in Nada after services at the church on Wednesday, April 21. She was one of those quiet and un- assuming persons whose many subtle and usually unrecognized contributions made life in Colorado County better and richer for everybody, in short, a valuable citizen. Sympathy is extended to the fam- ily in their loss. Highlights Continued from Page 2 as a first draft. Tom Phillips retiring... Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice Tom Phillips, 54, announced his retire- ment last week. Appointed by Gov. Bill Clements in 1988, Phillips won't be going straight to the rocking chair, however. He said he'll start teaching in the fall at the South Texas College of Law in Houston. Phillips' successor will be ap- pointed by the governor. DPS may not get rave reviews... The Department of Public Safety has announced a crackdown on illegal drug use at rave parties. A rave party is an all-night dance with music, light shows and often ille- gal drugs. Particularly popular in the summer, these events often are staged in open fields and they attract illegal drugs like bugs to an outdoor light bulb. The DPS has no beef with dancing or loud music, but it hopes to educate Texans on the dangers of drugs such as Ecstasy, Ketamine, LSD, nitrous oxide and the old standbys marijuana, cocaine and alcohol. April 17,2004 Two years later, she was named to

the committee to produce a 100th an- niversary book for the church, and she taught herself how to do research at the courthouse and in archives.

Tom Phillips retiring... Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice

Tom Phillips, 54, announced his retire- ment last week.

The Department of Public Safety

has announced a crackdown on illegal drug use at rave parties.
