New 2: (looking her up and down) you don’t seem the type.

New 1: (laughing) Welcome to the murderer’s gang

Yasmine: No, I didn’t…I’m innocent… It wasn’t me, I’m not meant to be in here. I didn’t murder anyone!

New 1: (sarcastically) yea, sure you didn’t

Yasmine: But I didn’t… I wouldn’t… I couldn’t.

New 2: So what happened then?-

New 1: -Yea, how can you get nicked for something you didn’t do?

Yasmine stand silently, fumbling with her hands

New 2: Oh come on… (getting annoyed)

Yasmine: I was just walking home and I heard this scream-so I ran over and found this person lying on the floor…She was still alive you see, so I knelt down and held her and she died in my arms (puts her hand to head, and turns away momentarily from the newbies) The next thing I know there’s Police all around me and they arrested me. (Crying) They put me in here (points to the floor) and I didn’t do it… I honestly didn’t do it …and I’m going to be stuck in here for life.

Yasmine breaks down into tears

New 2: Look (goes over to Yasmine, and puts hand on her shoulder to comfort her) maybe someone will find something-

New 1: -OR if you did do it you deserve to be in here.

Yasmine: But I didn’t. I…I… just tried to help. I don’t deserve to be in here. What the hell am I going to do?

New 1: You just have to keep your head down. If that Carla hears about it, she’ll probably kill you. She really does look vicious.

New 2: Stop it would you! That isn’t helping.

Watson, Joe and Boris walk into the room.

Watson: Right you two, (To Newbie’s) go with Joe and Boris. You (looks at Yasmine), what’s your name?

Yasmine: Yasmine sir.

Watson: You come with me. The Governor wants a word.

Governor’s office; Ms SULLIVAN (the Governor) sits at her desk looking very bored and wants something exciting to happen. BORIS enters the room.

Boris: You wanted to see me Governor?

Sullivan: Yes I did McKenzie, please take a seat and please, call me Ms.Sullivan.

Boris: Oh! Ok you can call me Boris if you like?

Sullivan: (Sniggers to herself) I’d rather not thank you. (Gesturing to chair) Please take a seat.

Boris: Thank you Ms. Sullivan (Sits down)

There is an awkward silence, which makes BORIS uncomfortable. Ms SULLIVAN finally starts to speak.

Sullivan: Ok I’m going to get to the point and tell you why I’ve sent for you.

She stands up from her desk and starts to walk around the room.

Sullivan: You have been working for us for a while and according to Mr. Watson-

As soon as she says Mr. WATSON, BORIS jumps out of his seat and becomes excited like a puppy

Boris: - MR. WATSON!!! What did he say about me? Did he say he was impressed with my skills? Did he say I gave him sharp answers in best training? Or did he say how much I remind him of himself in his younger days?

Sullivan: (sarcastically) Let me think ummmm… NO (gets serious) He actually said you’re a show off and that you are nothing but a useless pathetic swine who does nothing but follow him around all day.

Boris: (shocked) Mr. Watson said that?

BORIS is shocked and then bursts into tears. Ms. SULLIVAN comforts him by putting his head on her chest and holds him.

Sullivan: There, there my little soldier; it will be all right, Ms. Sullivan will make everything better. (She starts stroking his hair.)

Boris: (Boris starts sobbing like a pathetic child) I just wanted him to like me Ms. Sullivan, is that too much to ask?

Sullivan: Of course not McKenzie; I tell you what, if you do something for me I will say nice things about you to Mr. Watson. How does that sound?

Page 8: Cell block 33 final only (1)

Cell Block 33

Boris: Ok, if it makes him think I’m special!

Sullivan: Oh, he does think you’re, (Sarcastically) ‘SPECIAL’.

Boris: What do I need to do?

Sullivan: (Ms. Sullivan is still stroking his hair) Oh nothing much. All I want you to do is find some dirt on one of the prisoners and then come tell me and then we can spread it around the prison? Yeah, that would be fun… since there hasn’t been anything fun for ages?

Boris: but, but …. That’s against the rules! They don’t tell us to do that in ‘best training’. What if Mr. Watson finds out, what if……

Ms. SULLIVAN smoothly puts her finger on BORIS mouth so he knows she wants him to be quiet

Sullivan: (Sexy tone of voice) you do want to make me happy don’t you McKenzie

Boris: (Boris hesitates) but…. but…. Mr. Watson? What if he-

Ms. SULLIVAN feels Boris’s hand

Sullivan: -Oh my goodness!! You poor dear, you’re shaking like a leaf, let me help you relax…

Boris: Look Ms. Sullivan now that I know Mr. Watson doesn’t like me for some reason, I am going to do my best to impress him and I can’t mess things up any more, so I am sorry but the answer is…

BORIS cannot remember what he was saying as SULLIVAN starts to give him a shoulder massage.

Boris: the answer is…

Sullivan: (flirtatiously) you know young man, I always gets what I want!

Boris: Oh I bet you do Ms Sullivan!!! (Boris is enjoying the massage)

Sullivan: You do want to make me happy and make me tell Mr. Watson what a good boy you are? Right…

Boris: Ohhhhhhhhh YES Ms Sullivan!!! (Boris is REALLY enjoying the massage)

Sullivan: Than get out of here and find me some dirt on one of the prisoners you naughty boy!

Boris: Ohhhhhhh myyyy god yes, yes, yes! (He pulls out his note book with a pen and runs off)

Exit BORIS

WATSON and YASMINE enter the office. Ms SULLIVAN goes back to her desk and sits down.

Watson: We got a newbie!

Sullivan: Oh, I see and what’s her name?

Yasmine: My name is Yasmine!

Watson: (Shouting at Yasmine.) Only speak if the Governor asks you to speak you stupid piece of-

WATSON was about to hit her but SULLIVAN interrupts him so he stops himself, he smiles at the Governor

Sullivan: - It’s okay Mr Watson; I’ll let it slide this time.

Watson: (nervously) as you wish Ms Sullivan (Watson smiles at Ms Sullivan)

Sullivan: Well Yasmine, I don’t know why you’re here and I don’t really care. All I ask of you is to behave and keep your nose clean. Now before Mr Watson, takes you to your cell, I just wanted to warn you about Clara. She is the worst inmate we have. Now any questions?

Yasmine: What’s the food like?

Watson: CRAP! It tastes like crap, and looks like crap because it is CRAP!

Sullivan: Ok then that’s all I’ve got to say. Mr. Watson pleases would you show our new guest to her cell...

Watson: My pleasure Ms Sullivan, okay you, get a move on now. I don’t have all day!

WATSON pushes YASMINE out the door. SULLIVAN puts her hand on his shoulder and he turns round. She straitens out his collar.

Sullivan: There, we don’t want you looking untidy do we Mr. Watson.

They stand face to face about to kiss. YASMINE says something before they do.

Yasmine: Are we going then?

Watson: Yes, yes off we go.

Girls sit around the therapist’s room waiting for Mr MOORLAND to arrive.MOORLAND walks in the room and sits down. He takes a deep breath and begins to speak.

Moorland: Hello ladies, who wants to start us off today? Is there anything anyone wants to share?

Andi: I had toast for breakfast, with jam on top, yummy....

Moorland: Thank you Andi but that's not quite what I meant. Last session we were talking about respect.

Andi: (Towards Audience) so it’s about Respect this week!

Whitney: Yes I loved that session!

Andi: Oh Whitney, can you stop flirting with Mr. Moorland and stop talking about respect. (Sarcastically) We can always see it when we’re in our cells, (To Audience) especially between Carla and Nicole.

Nicole: Oi, if you gotta say something just say it out loud, init!

Carla: I’m getting bored, can we just carry on-

Moorland: -Yes thank you! So we were talking about respect. How to get it, what it means and how we feel about it. Has anyone had any thoughts?

Nicole: (Aggressive tone) Yeah. We don't have it and it’s never going to happen-

Carla: (towards audience) I swear I just said I’m getting bored so why is he carrying on this respect thing?

Sasha: (To audience) you don’t want to see her when she gets mad.

Moorland: -And why is that?

Carla: Cause we're nothing but criminals now.- (Looking at nail tips not actually interested)

Whitney: I’m not a criminal!

Nicole: Oh just shut up!

Moorland: -That’s not true; you’ve all got a second chance!

Carla: Oh Really? You think anyone is going to give me, (Pointing at herself) me a chance when I get out of here? You're dreaming man!

Andi:(looking confused) (To audience)Now it’s about dreaming?

Moorland: You have to earn a second chance. Start by learning respect, you know what they say; respect is the key to success.

Cash: Yeah well somebody stole the key.

Andi: (really confused) Now it’s about a key (Itching her hair)

Whitney: Considering your history, are you sure it wasn't you?

Cash: Are you accusing me of nicking stuff?

Nicole: (Laugh out loud) I swear that’s why you're in here?

Cash: Mistaken identity. dahh

Whitney: Tell it to the judge.

Cash: I did!

Nicole: Yea, after you bloody nicked his wallet.

Cash: Say that to my face in it!

Nicole: Ok. Bring it on!

Carla: Shut up Nics Bowel.

Nichole: Shut up Parla.

Carla: Do you want a punch round the face.

Sasha: (To Nicole) Back off or well get you!

Tasha: Just watch!

Nicole can’t be bothered to start and sits down kissing her teeth.

Moorland: Ladies, LADIES! Keep it together. Look, I know you're angry but fighting each other is not going to help! Respect is the key... (To audience) No let’s not start all that again.

Andi: Why is it we have nothing to do. We haven't got Sky, no internet and no BBM.

Moorland: That’s not true actually Andi, you could sit a few exams you know or grow some veg or...Andi: But i’m not Alan-um- Tit-um

Moorland: Titchmarsh

Carla: Why the heck am I even in here?

Nicole: Shut up you know why you’re in here!

Sasha: Shut up don’t talk to her!

Tasha: Yeah don’t talk to her!

Carla: You not go find someone else to bully coz Basha hear could beat the crap out of you.

Nicole: Yea! Now shut the hell up!

Carla: Are you like telling me to shut up?

Nicole: Yeah I am, do you have a problem with that?

Carla: I do init!

Moorland: Alright ladies cut it out, God I need to get a vacation. Look, that's the end of the session today but maybe next week we can talk about writing a letter to the Governor about conditions? We can try to make a positive change.

Whitney: (To Moorland) Aw I don’t want this to end!

Andi: Uh huh. (Sarcastically) Maybe she'll buy me that pony I wanted as well.

Whitney bursts out laughing

Carla: Whatever

Nicole: Piss off Carla!

NICOLE and CARLA storm out in opposite different directions. Others follow. Mr MOORLAND holds his head in his hand.

Moorland: Oh GOD!

Lights black out.

Cell Block 33

YASMINE has been dismissed from Ms SULLIVAN’S office and is now being taken by WATSON to her new cell. YASMINE walks slowly through the corridor looking around.

WATSON turns around and looks at YASMINE with an aggressive face.

Watson: (Angrily) come on there! Walk a bit faster, don’t dilly dally.

YASMINE gets scared on hearing WATSON’S angry voice and quickly stops looking around; instead she looks down and starts to walk faster to catch up with WATSON. WATSON angrily holds YASMINE’S arm and pulls her to walk at the same speed as him. Once they reach the cell, Watson lets go of YASMINE’S arm and *kicks open the cell door.

Watson: Right, come on in then

WATSON goes inside the dark cell and tries to find the light switch.

Enter YASMINE, as the lights are being switched on. She hears a noise.

Yasmine: What’s this weird noise?

Watson: What noise? (Looks around)

Yasmine: Can’t you hear it? It’s like someone’s breathing heavily and it’s coming from this direction.

YASMINE points and moves towards the direction, from where she could hear the noise. The noise gradually gets louder. All the lights are fully on now. YASMINE stops walking towards the direction and gazes at the person who is sleeping and snoring in front of her.

Yasmine: Who is she? (Shocked)

Watson: (points at Nicole and smugly) that’s who you’re sharing this cell with

Yasmine: What…but…

Watson: Shut it and no moaning. At the moment all the cells are taken, so you’ll stay here till we find you another cell… which will take us a while. (Pause) Right then! (To Nicole) Come on, wake up you lazy git.

WATSON walks over and pulls down a blanket over the barred window.

Watson: (shouts over at Nicole) and what have I told you about covering this window up?

The snoring stops and NICOLE gets up still half asleep

Watson: Come on…come on…wake up now, the cheek of it (looks over at Yasmine and sighs)

After yawning and stretching, NICOLE opens her eyes fully and stares at YASMINE, who is standing just a few steps away from her.

Nicole: Who’s she? (Looks Yasmine up and down) And what do you want? (Kisses her teeth and gives evil looks to both Yasmine and Watson.)

Watson: Say hello to your new cell mate – Yasmine!

Nicole: Ugh, what, that’s not fair, why’s she in here, put her in with Gracie or someone?

Watson: Now you know why we don’t put anyone in with Gracie… I don’t want any fuss in here. Okay?

Nicole: (Aggressive face) Listen, I aint sharing my room with no one. Move her somewhere else.

Watson: Shut up! Ms Sullivan decided to put Yasmine with you, so she’s staying right here, and that’s final.

Nicole: (annoyed and frustrated at the decision made by Ms Sullivan) Argh. But... If…

Watson: Excuse me, no ifs and NO butts. (Watson turns around and starts walking towards the door.)

Watson: Now settle in and I better see you two for the drill at 11 sharp!

WATSON leaves the cell. YASMINE walks over and sits on the bottom bunk. There is a moments silence after WATSON leaves.

Nicole: Why you in ‘ere then ‘ey?

Yasmine: I don’t know why I’m in here. It just wasn’t my fault okay (Soft voice)

Nicole: What? What did you say? (Whispers to herself) What’s she on about? Ugh, whatever… (Giving her evil looks.)

YASMINE just sits for a few moments and looks around the room. Inmate 2 and 4 walk into the cell.

Inmate 2: Alright Nicole?

Nicole: Yea, been worse.

Inmate 4: You know there’s gonna be a fight?

Nicole: Aint been one of them for a while.

Inmate 4: You comin?

Nicole: Na, can’t be asked!

Inmate 2 stares at Yasmine

Inmate 2: New cell mate?

Nicole: (passively) yea she just arrived

Inmate 2: You better watch yourself in here!

Inmate 4: Yeah, we aint had a really good punch up for a while now.

Inmate 2: She’s got one of those faces that could do with a bit of alteration.

Nicole jumps down from the bunk bed

Nicole: Oi, don’t you lay a finger on her, alright? She’s in my cell now so you don’t touch her, you know the rules!

Inmate 2: Yea what ever. Catch you later Nic!

Nicole grabs Inmate 2 by the throat.

Nicole: It’s Nicole to you yea, say Nic again and I’ll break it!

She lets go and they run away.

Yasmine: (sheepishly) Thanks.

Nicole: Don’t get too happy, it’s just the rules; you HAVE to look after your cell mate.

Yasmine begins to read. Nicole goes to pour some water from a jug.

Nicole: What you reading?

Yasmine: Beatrix Potter.

Nicole: Cool. I used to read loads before I came in here. Mine got taken away.

Yasmine: Why?

Nicole: I kept throwing them at Watson.

Yasmine laughs and Nicole laughs too.

Nicole: (Sighs) Anyway let’s not talk about this. I aint got any more books with me.

Yasmine: Well if you ever want to borrow mine you can. Just whenever you feel like reading, ask me if I’m around or just take it. But DON’T throw the at anyone (smiles)

Nicole: Really? Thanks!

The buzzer for the inspection rings.

Nicole: Uh damn it, its 11 already.

Yasmine: What was that buzzer for?

Nicole: Hey, Yasmine …

Yasmine cuts through Nicole’s dialogue.

Yasmine: Just call me Yas! (Smiles at Nicole)

Nicole: (Smiles back at Yasmine.) Yeah, Yas, that was the buzzer for the inspection. Come let’s go.

They walk around the stage and walk down to the court yard.

Nicole: You see that guard over there … (Points at Mr Chandra who is standing in his own little world.)

Yasmine: Oh … over there? (Points and squints her eyes.) That one? Oh yeah, yeah, what about him? He looks arrogant to me.

Nicole: no, no, no, he’s the nicest one out of all these guards (looks around) that one there, (Pointing to Watson), he’s a right stuck up git and that one (pointing to Boris), he’s always sucking up to Watson and that one (Pointing to Joe), he’s a good one. Anything you need under the counter (nudges and winks at Yasmine) just ask him. Come on we better go mix in with the others.

All the girls stand around the stage, where WATSON and CHANDRA are standing. Whilst, WATSON and CHANDRA are talking amongst themselves, NICOLE sneaks YASMINE away with her, as she’s not keen on the inspection, and they get away.

Watson: Alright Ladies shut your gobs! (All the girls stop talking)I don’t have enough time to waste on this inspection, so that’s why you’re going to be inspected by Mr Chandra (Chandra waves at the girls and they start laughing, which makes Watson angry) SHUT IT! I have more important things to do as I have a very important meeting with Ms Sullivan (He starts smiling)

Carla: (shouts out from crowd) I bet it is VERY important.

Girls whistle and laugh CHANDRA joins in.

Watson: (Looks at Chandra) Think that’s funny, do you?

Chandra: I’m so sorry, I didn’t-

WATSON doesn’t let CHANDRA finish what he’s saying and storms off

Chandra: (smiles at the girls) well now that the drama queen’s gone, let’s carry on. (Looks really confused) So, what were we supposed to do again? Oh yes, the inspection thing followed by some PE. Listen up ladies, would you mind awfully, standing in nice three neat rows, quick as you can now…

Carla: (sarcastically) Okay, watch us make the prettiest lines ever Mr Kanda!

Chandra: Oh my gosh, Carla, do you still not know how to say my name? IT’S CHANDRA!

Inmate 1: It’s a difficult name to say Changrey

Chandra: Let’s just try to get it right shall we. On the count of three would you all mind just shouting ‘Chandra’ as loud as you possibly can, then we can all get it right. Ok? One, two, three!

Inmate 6: Won’t that just annoy someone.

All girls: (Shouting) CHANDRA!

Watson runs out onto Balcony.

Watson: Chandra? What are you doing?

Chandra: Just practicing my name sir.

Watson: Well you should know your own name by now.

Watson goes back into the room

Inmate 5: Who chose your name Mr Chandra? (Saying name slowly to prove she said it right)

Chandra: It was my dear father actually; you see he was named Chandra too.

Inmate 2: Not very good is it! (sniggers)

Chandra: Well at least it’s better than Boris.

Girls burst out laughing

Chandra: Now, enough of this nonsense, let’s get this check over and done with before Watson comes back, otherwise all of us will be in an awful lot of trouble.

Carla: (sarcastically laughs) did you not hear where he said he’s going, Ms Sullivan’s office! (Pause) He won't be coming back for a while.

All the girls start laughing

Chandra: (daydreams) Ahhh… he’s such a lucky guy. (Stops daydreaming) Now come on, didn't I tell you girls to get in a nice line? Come on then…

Girls get into 3 lines

Chandra: Alright, would you all mind emptying your pockets please.

Inmate 4: What’s the point? We don’t have anything; you people don’t even let us keep cigarettes.

Chandra: I’ll tell you what, if this inspection goes smoothly, and I have no more trouble; I will give you girl’s lollipops. How about that?

Girls start to giggle

Carla: Oh my god! Your such a waste man, but you got yourself a deal.

Chandra: Okay good. But please don’t call me names, it hurts my feelings.

Inmate 6: Sorry Chandry

Chandra: Oh, really!

Inmate 6: Chandra!

CHANDRA begins the inspection, checks everyone’s pockets.

Chandra: Come on girls, now for your favourite part, EXERCISE!

All girls moan but start exercising in a dance routine with tune

Chandra: (getting emotional) oh my gosh, that was absolutely fantastic. Even though I promised myself I wouldn’t cry, I just can’t help it (sniffs)

Lighting begins to dim on CHANDRA and the girls. Exit CHANDRA and INMATES. The spotlight changes to the rear of the stage, Enter NICOLE and YASMINE. NICOLE sits on her bed and YASMINE walks up and down their cell room.

Nicole: (looks at Yasmine) what’s up with you?

Yasmine: I don’t get it, why are you so relaxed about sneaking out of the inspection I mean-

Nicole: - Oh shut up! Nothing will happen. You know Mr Chandra, he’s a nice guy but he lives in a fantasy world. He doesn’t know about anything that goes on in here, and even if he does, he’s too dumb to understand-

Yasmine: (interferes) – yeah but-

Nicole: - Just stop worrying, and seriously stop walking up and down, its making me feel giddy. Just sit down.

NICOLE takes out beers from under her bed.

Yasmine: (Worryingly) What’s that?

Nicole: Ah, here we go again. Relax already. (Opens up a beer can) You know, what’s his name…Joe? - he brings us these (holds up beer can) So it’s okay. You’re such a worrier (shakes her head from side to side)

Yasmine: Whoa, seriously? Joe, actually brings you things like this? (points at beers)

Nicole: (sarcastically) No, they just let us run out of here every now and then and let us buy things like this. You didn’t know?

Yasmine: (does a sarcastic laugh) hahaha. You’re so funny. Well, if that’s true, and one of the guards does bring you beer, then just pass one here.

Nicole: Oooh, good girl gone bad eh?

Laughs and throws a beer can to YASMINE, and takes a sip of beer herself.

Nicole: Ahh, this reminds me so much of the good times. Being out, being free, and doing what you wanted and when you wanted.

(Pause)

Yasmine: (starts thinking) I hope you don’t mind me asking but how did you get

in here?

Nicole: (She snaps at Yasmine) Sure, like I’ll just tell you every single thing about me shall I?!

YASMINE gets up, goes and sits beside NICOLE on her bed, after seeing her eyes water, NICOLE moves towards her.

Yasmine: Come on, you can trust me. I won’t tell anyone- and even if I wanted to, who would I tell? Let’s face it; I’m not really liked around here …am I now

Nicole: (sniffs and pretends to laugh) Hmm, that’s true. Well, around 4 years ago, me and Carla (pauses) …you know Carla right?

Yasmine: Yeah I do (looks and sounds confused) But you and Carla ….I swear you guys hate each other, don't you?

Nicole: Just listen will you? (Getting a little angry)

Yasmine: But I don't get it-

Nicole: (angry tone) - WHAT'S UP WITH YOU? I SAY ONE THING; YOU ASK A MILLION QUESTIONS AND THEN YOU-

Yasmine: -Sorry. Calm down. Okay, trust me I won't say a word at all. Just go on…

Nicole calms down

Nicole: Me and her were such good friends, we used to do everything together. Suddenly she just completely changed. And it all started on that day, that day…..

Lights begin to dim to the sound of music, Blackout. Exit YASMINE and NICOLE.

Long pause, CARLA realises something and turns round to NICOLE.

Carla: Let’s go scare her. Don’t worry, she’ll get it back hard - and I mean hard. Backstabbing me, how dare she. Ohhh just wait till I get my hands on her.

Nicole: Carla you’re not going to kill her are you?

Carla: No I’m going to do worse.

Nicole: (puts her hands on Carla’s shoulders) Please Carla calm down.

Carla: (getting frustrated Carla turns away from Nicole) I need to get back at her, she ruined my relationship and (sadly) broke my heart (aggressively and turns towards Nicole) Do you understand?

Nicole: Yeah, I do… but violence isn’t the way. (Mumbles and looks scared) Promise me you won’t seriously hurt her. Promise me you won’t kill her.

Carla: Alright, we’ll just shake her up then? Help me please? I PROMISE (Defining moment) we won’t hurt her.

Nicole: How about the cheater?

Carla: Don’t care, he’s just a guy, doesn’t matter to me. (Hand gesture)Let’s go!

Both CARLA and NICOLE leave the house

Nicole: (Checks phone) Julie just texted me (Shows Carla her phone) she’s at the park.

Carla: Right, let’s make the girl pay (begins to walk)

Nicole: (gets in Carla’s way) Carla just leave it, she aint worth it.

Carla: Don’t care, you’re my girl, I respect you but when someone messes with me, I ain’t just going to let them walk over me I need to be strong.

Nicole: Ok, I’ll help you.

Carla: Are you going to do it then?

Nicole: Yeah all right, why should you let this drop, what’s the worst that could happen.

Carla: Exactly, let’s go

NICOLE and CARLA arrive at the park and see KATE who’s sitting on the bench

Carla: Oi you.

Kate: Are you talking to me love, I’m waiting for someone.

Carla: Yeah, MY Boyfriend.

Nicole: You filthy little brat we know about (prods Kate) you.

Carla: Do you have any last words to say? (Carla clinches her knuckles)

Kate: Leave me alone, I didn’t even do any….

CARLA interrupts and swings a punch at her face.

Carla: That’s right shut your mouth

Fight scene. CARLA pulls out knife and stab’s KATE. KATE falls to the ground still moving. NICOLE is so shocked she just stares at KATE and can’t move.

Carla: (looks at Nicole) Come on, let’s get out of here (grabs onto her hand to run away)

Nicole: (gets free of Carla’s hand) I’m going home.

Carla: She got what she deserved.

Nicole: You stabbed her. We said scare not stab, you psycho!

CARLA grabs NICOLE by the hand

Carla: We need to get out of here! Come on!

Police Sirens ring and a load of armed, police officers approach the girls. NICOLE gives up but CARLA makes a run for it but is police tackled to the floor.

Court Room

CARLA is sentenced to seven years and NICOLE is sentenced to five years as KATE survived.

Judge voice over: I sentence you Carla Louise Hughes to seven years in prison for the stabbing of an innocent girl. I sentence you Nicole Harper to five years in jail for GBH and assisting a stabbing.

Lights begin to dim. Exit CARLA, NICOLE, and POLICE OFFICERS.

Back out of flash back

Enter NICOLE and YASMINE, both are sitting in their cell.

Nicole: So that’s what happened. That’s why I’m in here…

Yasmine: But why is everybody scared of Carla, she didn’t murder her or kill loads of people.

Nicole: She lied. She made up all sorts of things that weren’t true.

Yasmine: So why not tell the others?

Nicole: Coz I made a promise a long time ago that I would never go against her. And unlike her, I stick to my promises. I’m going to get some fresh air, hide them would you. (Pointing to beer can and walks out)

YASMINE sits for a moment trying to take in what NICOLE just said

Scene 7 – Parnyan

Several of the guards sit around in the officers mess room whilst JOE, CHANDRA and BORIS are standing over by the sink.

Joe: Cup of tea for you all (said suspiciously) and something interesting to go with it.

Chandra: oh really? (Wide smile)I’m really excited what is it?

Joe: You’ll know once you taste it

Mckenzie: No, I’m not up for anything like that, Mr Watson wouldn’t like it.

Joe: You guys need to know how to have REAL FUN! Changra, here have some.

Chandra: Its Chandra not Changra and thanks (takes a cup of tea from JOE)

BORIS, JOE and CHANDRA drink the tea with a mixture of something else and it has an effect on them. The three guards laugh and get out of control.

Chandra: Boris, Boris guess what?

Boris: And what exactly is that?

Chandra: Your mums so fat she doesn’t realise when she’s floating on water! (Laughs loudly)

Joe: Oh really well that’s not what happened when I saw her, well she was stuck between a two way door, I mean how massive is that?

Boris: hahahaha you’re quite funny but you wouldn’t like it when karma hits you… HARD.

MOORLAND enters the room

Moorland: Alright guys?

Boris: Tea?

Moorland: No thanks, where do you lot see yourself in five year’s time?

Joe: Random question but I’ll be long gone, in a job where people don’t hate you.

Boris: Better not become a banker though!

Moorland: What about you Chandra, here in five years?

Chandra: Oh no, I see myself with a perfect wife, with seven perfect children and a perfect job (not this one) NOT THIS ONE!

Joe: Oh really, but you missed out on the bit where your wife’s blind and doesn’t know who on earth she’s married to (smirks)

Chandra: (sniffs) that’s rather rude Joe.

Joe: Sorry mate.

Chandra: it’s okay don’t worry Joey

(JOE gives and awkward look to CHANDRA)

JOE: Moorland, why do you want to know about that anyway?

Moorland: I need to get away for a vacation. I can’t stand being here anymore.

Chandra: Why not move to India?

Moorland: I couldn’t stand the heat. You know what…I think I’ll move to America!

Chandra: Well it’s awfully hot there as well you know!

Moorland: No it’s not, it’s right near the North Pole.

Joe: Boris why are you so quiet? (Confused) It’s shocking to see you not talking about Mr Watson and how wonderful he is.

Boris: Well I want to have the same status as Mr Watson and do things very differently to impress him, but he’s not willing to give me a chance. I do like him but right now I wish I could spill this tea in his hat.

CHANDRA and JOE see Mr WATSON coming and deliberately make BORIS insult MR WATSON

Joe: That’s really shocking to hear, tell us more!

Boris: He is the worst creature God has ever created; I mean he looks like medusa, with the snakes hissing at everyone they see.

Chandra: He is a wonderful boss to us, I don’t understand why you’re saying this?

Joe: Mr Watson always has control over everything

Boris: Are you all feeling alright, he treats us all with no respect, so the next time I see him, I will say no to whatever he demands for and stand up for myself (stands up and points at guards) you all just watch!

Watson: Very interesting Boris, I was about to give you a certificate on how supportive you are of me but, since you made it very clear, no you’re not interspersed in having it.

Mr WATSON tears up the certificate in front of BORIS and throws it up in the air

Watson: Now you all pay attention. What is this nuisance? Drink your tea quick because I’m going to start the Best Training class right now.

Boris: But sir...

Watson: Shut up Boris! Now my lecture today will start with how to deal with fight situations. I hope you’re all making notes on this (waves a pen at them)

Chandra: Oh I don’t like fighting Mr Watson. Somebody might get hurt (looks around sheepishly)

Watson: No you idiot not how to get into a fight, how to stop it!

All Guards: Ahhh!

Watson: God give me strength. Now I would like a volunteer (looks at the guards, but stops at Boris) Hmm, Boris you’ll do. Chandra you stand behind me. I want you to do this. Stand with your back to me (Chandra stands with his back to Watson) Yes that’s right. Now I need you to fall back and I’ll catch you. (To Chandra) I’ll do it first then you can have a go. Just lean back on the count of three; one-two three...

Just before BORIS leans back SULLIVAN enters the room. WATSON moves quickly towards her and BORIS falls. CHANDRA manages to catch him but they both fall.

Sullivan: (Seductively) Hello Watson, I just wondered if I could have a word. (Looks back at CHANDRA and BORIS who have fallen on the floor)Oh my god, what’s going on here?

Watson: Well, I was just teaching them to trust each other. I just wanted them to have faith in each other.

Sullivan: Wow, I’ve never seen such a wonderful man who worries about his colleagues so much. What a lovely man you are Mr Watson!

WATSON smiles and bows

Watson: Oh, I’m sorry I completely forgot about you all (looks towards Sullivan and smiles, and then looks back at guards) you can all go.

Joe: No, I’m alright thanks.

Watson: I said GO! (Points towards their exit)

All the GUARDS exit

Sullivan: how sweet, Michy. You’re such a sweetheart.

Watson: Yesss Stella

Sullivan: I was thinking cherry-pie, would suit you best as you’re such a delight to be around.

Ms Sullivan plays with Mr Watsons tie

Watson: oh stop it; you speak so spoonley, um smoothly.

Sullivan: and you cherry-pie, you make my name sound so sophisticated and hot, yeah call me Stella.

Ms Stella Sullivan’s papers fall to the floor and they both kneel to get it, Ms Sullivan and Mr Watson makes close eye contact.

Watson: Allow me to pick up your papers, my lady

Sullivan: You’re such a gentleman!

Mr Watson on one knee gives the papers to Ms Sullivan

Watson: Is it me or is there a star in your eye?

Sullivan: So what are your plans for today?

Watson: Well nothing much, but I was thinking we could go somewhere for dinner.

Sullivan: so…

Watson: So… can I take you out for dinner?

Sullivan: That’s really nice, so your paying for it cherry-pie, right?

Scene 8 -Sara

The bell rings for dinner and all the inmates come marching in a sequence. At one end of the concert hall 3 dinner ladies are standing waiting to serve the inmates with WATSON on one side and BORIS on the other.

Watson: COME ON LADIES! Chop, chop now get in line and get your slop!

Boris: YEA! You heard him, don’t waste our time!

Inmate: How’s about you just shut it, we don’t take orders from a (looks Boris up and down) little man like you.

Watson: Alright then, listen to a big man like me! So as he said, get a move on!

Inmates: Whatever

Boris: Um, Mr Watson. You’ve got some Lipstick on your mouth.

Watson: (touches his lips) Just-um- trying on some disguises.

Tannoy announcement.

Sullivan’s Voice: Could all guards report my office immediately please?

Watson: Come on Boris, Mrs Sullivan needs us.

Boris: But we shouldn’t really leave...

Watson: NO BUTS BORIS, The lady has spoken; we’ll only be 5 minutes. (Straightens tie)

Boris: You’re right ,what can happen in those five minutes...

The guards leave unnoticed.

As all the inmates sit down in lines to eat their food .YASMINE walks to the canteen after everyone’s sat down then CARLA walks in and over to the canteen followed by NICOLE a few minutes later. YASMINE looks around the dining hall to see where she can sit, after other inmates showing her that she is not welcome to sit anywhere she slips and falls into CARLA.

Carla: (stands up) what the...

CARLA takes a deep breath and looks down at herself, while all of the inmates look at them in the middle of the dining hall in shock whispering to each other and moving away from them, YASMINE is stuck on the spot, really scared and speaking with a stutter.

Yasmine: Oh my god I’m, I’m so, so, so sorry!

Sasha: What have you done you idiot?

Carla: Yea you will be sorry when I’m finished with you, you lil brat...

Yasmine: I didn’t mmm…Mean it!

Carla: (closes fists) Well I’ll mean every single bruise and cut I leave on your body!

Sash: Basha. BASH HER.

Tasha: (To audience) Now you know why she’s called Basha!

SASHA grabs YASMINE by the hair and CARLA starts to speak to the other inmates as they gather around.

Carla: (Trying to mimic her sweet voice) new girl wants to know what it’s really like in here, don’t you.

Sasha: She wants to be taught a lesson.

Tasha: We’ll show her one she’ll never forget!

NICOLE walks over and pushes people out the way and shouts out

Nicole: Oiiii, why don’t you mess with someone your own size, you good for nothing tart!

All inmates move right back now even more shocked and completely silent to what has just happened. CARLA lets go and pushes YASMINE, who falls to the floor hurt, and looks up slowly at NICOLE who are now facing each other at a distance in the middle of the hall.

Carla: Excuse me?

Nicole: You heard me, why are you acting like your something big, you worthless, bag of filth!

Tasha: (points at Nicole) watch your mouth!

Carla: Oh …so big man decides to speak up now yea? Just get out of here before I do some real harm!

CARLA looks at the other inmates smiling and shaking her head left and right. NICOLE starts walking in circles around CARLA.

Nicole: Well I don’t know my dearest friend, why don’t you tell me, or how’s about you tell everyone here how messed up that mind of yours is, how you lied in court about me knowing that you were going to stab Kate!

NICOLE’S tone in voice changes to a much softer and hurtful tone

Nicole: How you tricked your best and only friend for a selfish and stupid reason and yet I didn’t think anything bad, coz you meant everything to me and I would do anything I can for you! (Stops right in front of CARLA)

Tasha: Shut up that aint true.

Carla: You’re actually the Stupid one! You knew how much he meant to me! How can some random nobody come along and decide to try it with my man, I thought you would understand.

Nicole: I guess what we used to be is no more. Well you know what, I thank god I don’t see you in the same way, coz I’m doing so much better without you.

NICOLE turns around to walk away when CARLA mutters a comment about her.

Carla: I always was the stronger and better one, even when we were little girls, people will never change.

NICOLE forgets about everything that just happens and thinks about the last words CARLA just said and turns around, leaping onto CARLA from behind. Here both CARLA and NICOLE are fighting and ripping, scratching and punching each other on the floor.

Inmates are now gathered around shouting and cheering at both girls on the floor. WATSON, BORIS and JOE now re-enter the hall, realising what is happening and running in at the same time calling for back up.

Watson: (barging through the inmates) EVERYONE GET THE HELL OUT OF THE WAY!

WATSON grabs CARLA and BORIS grabs NICOLE

Watson: SHUT IT!

Girls continue to shout. CHANDRA enters.

Chandra: (Nice and calmly), Girls please, please girls, girls now you really must be quiet. Please be quite girls (Shouts angrily, really loud) QUIET!

Everybody stops including the Guards and look at CHANDRA in disbelief.

Chandra: (calm tone) that’s much, much better! Now please all go back to your cells nice and quietly and as quickly as possible please.

The prisoners are still too shocked to move

Chandra: Quickly now please.

Everybody starts moving again still in disbelief. The three girls are separated and taken away by JOE and BORIS. CHANDRA is still standing in the centre of the stage blowing his nose.

Watson: Well done Chandra. That was bloody good work, most unlike you.

Chandra: Well I just cannot stand people talking over me I find it frightfully rude.

Once everyone else has exited the stage, the three girls are walking back in this time handcuffed with BORIS standing in front and JOE at the back being led to their cell. One by one they are let into their individual cells. (which are right next to each other)

Boris: Well after your clever moves, you guys are locked up in here till tomorrow, no Free time you disgraceful Idiots! I think Watson will be very pleased with me today.

Joe: I’m going to see Mrs Sullivan! See you later.

Both Guards leave the three Women who are sitting thinking and looking down.

Ms Sullivan’s Office: Ms Sullivan and Mr Watson are having a friendly chat.

Watson: Did I ever tell you how amazing you are at your job.

Sullivan: (plays with her hair) Oh Please Cherrie Pie, you’re too kind. Besides, have you got the paper work I asked you to do?

Watson: Oh ermm...Of course. Come with me madam and I’ll show you exactly where it is!

WATSON and SULLIVAN hold hands and both leave, not realising they leave the door open behind them, whilst INMATE 1 and INMATE 2 are allowed on parole, realise that SULLIVAN’S door is left open.

Inmate 1: Oi look, Ms Sullivan’s door is open (points at door)

Inmate 2: Well is anyone inside?

Inmate 1: Errrm... (Looks through the door) Nope!

Inmate 2: Go in and see if there’s anything good in there!

Inmate 1: We can’t just go in there!

Inmate 2: What you in here for?

Inmate 1: Breaking and entering!

Inmate 2: Well…off you go then! I’ll keep watch and see if you can dig something up about, let’s see…CARLA!

INMATE 1 starts looking through files very rapidly, whilst INMATE 2 is on look out by the door.

Inmate 1: There are files on all of us!

Inmate 2: You found Carla’s yet?

INMATE 1 comes across Carla’s file and starts to read.

Inmate 1: Well, well, well! Looks like Carla isn’t little Miss bad girl after all.

Inmate 2: What you on about?

INMATE 1 slams file cabinet shut and both run. The two inmates are back with the others in the recreation room, where everyone is busy doing their own thing. INMATE 1 and INMATE 2 gather round a few of the girls and tell them what they’ve just found out. Whispers go round the group.

Carla: (looks at the other table where inmate 1 and 2 are sitting) what’s the gossip over there?

Sasha: (shrugs) who cares, probably a load of rubbish anyways.

Carla: Yea I guess. (Looking quite suspicious)

A few of the girls get up and start whispering to the girls seated around CARLA, CARLA is feeling very left out and slightly nervous as all the girls are now staring at her.

Carla: (Stands Up) WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON AROUND HERE?

Inmate 1: (Viciously sits Carla down.) You best shut your mouth.

Inmate 6: (To Carla) what was it again you’re in here for?

Carla: I’ve told you all before already… Murder.

Everyone starts laughing and then suddenly stop.

Inmate 3: (Holding Carla’s neck from the back.) Wrong answer, try again.

CARLA gets more and more nervous.

Carla: Okay, Okay… I only stabbed the damn girl now get the hell off me.

Inmate 4: Uh, not so fast. Now you see; you’ve been a right cow around here. Things are about to change!

Inmate 2: A girl with only one record of stabbing someone has been messing with the wrong bunch of girls.

Inmate 1: Girls! Let’s say we show little miss bad girl, what it really means to be bad.

Freeze the scene with INMATE 2 holding the back of CARLA’S head whilst INMATE 1 is about to violently punch her, meanwhile everyone else is gathered round cheering and yelling abuse at CARLA.

Scene cuts to Yasmine and Nicole

Yasmine: Nicole, look at this, is this really what you want to happen to your best friend?

Nicole: She’s not my best friend and never will be; no friend of mine would do the things she did.

Yasmine: I know your upset at her and I know you have no intensions of becoming friends again. But there’s no harm in trying.

Nicole: You would never understand how it felt; to see your own friend lie and set you up. It’s all her fault I’m stuck in here!

Yasmine: You’re right. I won’t ever understand, but I do know deep inside, you want to go and help her right now. It’s never too late to change things between you two and holding a grudge against her won’t ever change what’s happened.

NICOLE sighs and realises the right thing to do. Girls unfreeze, yelling abuse and cheering on INMATE 1, who is about to punch CARLA.

Inmate 6: PUNCH HER! WHAT YOU WAITING FOR!

Inmate 3: Carla you’re a liar!

All inmates are now getting very aggressive.

All Inmates: PUNCH HER! PUNCH HER! PUNCH HER!

Nicole: (Stands Up) STOP!

Everyone stops suddenly and turns around.

Inmate 1: SHUT UP!

Nicole: Oi just listen to me for two minutes.

Inmate 5: Go on then, this better be worth it.

Nicole: (Takes a deep breath) How is beating up Carla, going to solve anything. Don’t you realise by acting this way you’re all only becoming what you hated day by day. Carla was only as petrified as you all were when you first came here. We all made stupid mistakes and tried covering up how scared we were by putting on this fake shield that truly doesn’t need to be there. If you lot feel that the only way left is to stoop to Carla’s level, then we’re all only as bad as her. I’m sure she doesn’t mean a thing of what she’s done, I mean come on; I should know her better than anyone in here. Just take a second to think about who you all were before you came here

There’s a silence within the group, everyone is left speechless. WATSON and CHANDRA enter.

Watson: Okay you lot, fun time over; now get to your cells.

Chandra: Mr Moorland has had some personal trouble so has had the week off.

Andi: So, you’re taking our therapy session?

Chandra: Well it seems so. Today we will be discussing... Um, what are we supposed to be discussing?

Andi: Relationships Mr Chandra.

Chandra: Relationships, have any of you had any past relationships??

Chandra: Well it would be nice for someone to care for me, other than my mother (shakes head in shame)

Cash: Why not try and ask her out?

Chandra: Oh no, I couldn’t possibly! She’d think I was being silly.

Inmate 3: You should go for it, I think she likes you!

Chandra: (With excitement) do you really?

Everyone: YES!

Chandra: Maybe I should try then!

Inmate 2: Go tell her then!

Inmate 4: Yea you should.

Chandra: But I wouldn’t possibly know what to say to her.

Everyone starts speaking at once

Chandra: Hold on, one at a time please girls.

Whitney: You should say she’s pretty.

Andi: Just say that and you’ll be fine.

Chandra: Wish me luck girls and try not to do anything too naughty whilst I’m gone.

CHANDRA walks quickly and nervously toward the governor’s office. He arrives at the office and knocks on the door. There’s no answer so he just opens the door and walks in. He glances at SULLIVAN and starts to read the words of his hand not looking up.

Chandra: (rushing) Ms Sullivan I need to tell you something …no don’t stop me ,I love you and I always have and I think you feel the same way actually I know you do and I love you and I want to spend long evenings by the fire with you and...

CHANDRA looks and sees SULLIVAN with WATSON who she has just been kissing.

Chandra: Oh, I’m terribly sorry I didn’t know you had someone with you.

Sullivan: Oh dear, this is a bit sticky isn’t it. You see Chaudry...

Chandra: Chandra!

Sullivan: Chandra, I’m with Mitch... -Watson now. I’m very sorry.

Chandra: (Sad) No, I understand. I’m terribly sorry to disturb you.

CHANDRA walks towards the door, he opens it, looks over his shoulder at SULLIVAN, pulls a handkerchief out of his pocket, wipes his eyes and leaves. SULLIVAN and WATSON freeze for a few moments; look at each other and start to kiss again.

Carla: I’m starting to realise that being together with everyone even Nicole is not so bad, I actually miss my times with Nicole and I guess I’ve been too big headed to actually admit that I was wrong all along and Nicole wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for me, but there is no going back so I guess I should make the most of these moments.

Spotlight now turns onto NICOLE

Nicole: Why wasn’t it like this from the beginning, even though so much has happened, I can’t go back and change things and I really do miss my best friend?, I’m gonna make sure before I go it’s never too late…

Carla: What do you think you’ll do when you get out?

Nicole: Thinking of writing a book.

Carla: What you going to call it?

Nicole: The Promise …I’ll send you a copy when it’s done.

Yasmine: I… I… I do but… You can’t go, you just can’t.

Nicole: see your saying it yourself, you don’t’ really need me. You will cope and you do not deserve to be here. Do you understand what I’m saying to you?

Yasmine: wait hold on, what’s wrong with me. I should be happy with what’s happened. I was waiting for this day for a very long time. I’m really sorry. What sort of a friend am I.

Johnny: So what was the promise?

Nicole: Come on, if I say it, then it would give everything away

Johnny: Ah, so that’s obviously a key feature in the book.

Nicole: Yeah, that and many other things like, how me and Yasmine met, how she changed me as a person and that I owe my life to her.

Sally: So where is this Yasmine?

Nicole: Well, the situation is Sally, Yasmine is still in prison, but she won’t be staying there for too long-

Nicole: Don’t thank me Yasmine, you helped me when I was in need, and now I’ve done the same for you. (Puts hand on Yasmine’s shoulder)I’m just so pleased you’re free
