We have reached our half way point of the Autumn term and really do thank God for this fantastic gift of our new school. All students have settled in well and have embraced the changes in a positive way. The unique Archbishop Blanch ethos has certainly travelled with us to our new building, as I witness on a daily basis acts of kindness, thoughtful words and genuine smiles on the faces of our young people as they grow and develop in our new spaces. This is wonderful to see.

As you read our newsletter, I am sure you will yet again be impressed by just a few of our young peoples’ achievements and see a selection of the opportunities that have been available to our students since September.

I continue to be proud of all of our students and look forward to seeing what they will accomplish during the next part of our academic year.

Matilda Ferguson a year 9 pupil was awarded a hugely sought after Blue Peter badge for her work with the Anne Frank Trust. Here Matilda tells us her story:

“On the 30th & 31st of March 2015, the 10 Anne Frank ambassadors (Riham Ali, Philippa Ambler, Isabel Balmforth, Eleanor Daniel-McKeigue, Kharis Dunsby, Anna Lea- Wilson, Sarah Jayne McCallum, Erin Moore, Anna Watson and myself), went to Alsop High school to meet more ambassadors from other schools across Liverpool. Or aim as Anne Frank ambassadors was to spread Anne Frank’s story in order to stop prejudicial events happening again, and stereotypical statements affecting people’s lives in a negative way.

As a group, we discussed what we could do as ambassadors for the Anne Frank Trust. Each school had different ideas. Our team decided to organise different trips to different primary schools amongst other things. We split the projects between ourselves. One of the things I participated in was to contact Blue Peter. We had this idea because in 1979 (just one year before his death) Otto Frank, Anne’s father, was on Blue Peter with the original and first of Anne’s diaries. He has been one of their most honoured guests. So because of this connection, Blue Peter were more than happy to interact with us through emails.

After several exchanges, they emailed on the 28th April informing me that I had been put forward for a Blue Peter badge, then on the 7th July, I received a package containing the badge and a letter congratulating me and the rest of the ambassadors for our work.

Business Breakfast

Aptitude Enterprise TeamOn Thursday, 17 September, 2015, our sixth form Aptitude Enterprise Team delivered their presentation to an audience at a Business Breakfast event. They showed off their presentation skills and their professional 45 second advert that won them the prestigious awards of Best Sales Team and Excellence in Retail at the North West Regional Final at Knutsford last June and were highly praised as runners-up.

The Breakfast event was attended by local businesses and Luciana Berger, MP. The team can be seen showing off their awards with Luciana. Our visitors were impressed by their presentation and products and the girls have been invited into various businesses to pitch their ideas to potential customers. Well done, again, Aptitude!

This half term 40 dance and music students who will be going to Disney land Paris, have begun rehearsing for their performance at Disneyland Paris on Sunday 14th February 2016. The first dance rehearsal brought 26 of our GCSE and A Level dancers together in our brand new state of the art theatre which has a sprung floor.

The girls were working on a Contemporary dance to Jessie

J’s ‘Flashlight’, which is technically demanding but gives students ample opportunity to apply their performance skills. With only 13 more school weeks before the trip the pressure is on to create an outstanding and entertaining show which will blow the audience away and get them talking about the amount of talent we have at Archbishop Blanch.

Holly White Year 8 recently represented the North West English School Swimming League at the interdivisional Championships in which she competed in the junior girls 200m butterfly and the team freestyle relay.

Holly won a gold medal in both of these events. Well done Holly we are very proud of your achievement.

On Thursday October 8th, the year 12 Geography group spent the day at the River Alyn, North Wales. They collected data on the changes in the river as it flows downstream from the source to Loggerheads country park for their AS level skills examination.

The day was warm and sunny, the river was wet, the cows were friendly and the students got soaked but enjoyed the experience of practical activities outside the classroom.

To celebrate the opening of our new school a number of creative initiatives are taking place over the course of the year, in recognition of our pupils’ diverse talents and strengths.

One of these is an exciting new scheme to help nurture and celebrate our pupils’ creativity through writing.

Our Writer in Residence this year is Ms Robson, who has taken time off from English teaching to write a novel, and will be writing alongside ABS’ budding authors and sharing her ideas for firing up the imagination and transforming ideas into words on the page.

Ms Robson has run writing clubs at ABS before and has always been amazed at our pupils’ ability to step into others’ shoes, to see the world through different eyes. Writing unlocks creativity in so many ways but it also helps us to explore who we are, why we and others do what we do, so by taking part in our writing activities your child will explore life outside of the classroom and share her unique view of the world in a place where her voice is valued and heard.

There will be lots of opportunities for your daughter to become involved in workshops and clubs throughout the year, and competitions will be held termly to encourage and inspire our pupils to write.

At the end of the academic year, in the summer term, we will celebrate our creative journey by publishing a booklet of pupils’ writing, selected by a panel of readers from across the school.

The scheme begins this week with Years 7 -9 taking part in writing workshops to transform ideas into a story that will engage readers and provide them with surprises and intrigue along the way.Watch this space for pupils’ writing.

IntrigueI’m an agent, although I don’t know how I got here. When I look back it happened so fast.

We never saw it coming … it was a case of, well, you don’t need to know.

We thought our first mission was simple, but it turned out to be bigger than we thought, bigger than any of us. Five of us went out, only I returned. I don’t know how I’m going to get out of this. I’ve survived many things but this … this one, I don’t know about.

I don’t think I want to after what I’ve seen.
