WE'VE COME A LONG WAY, BABY!

In the summer of 1961, using the old county school bus garage as temporary classrooms, 50 studentsstarted class to become electrical linesmen at the Lee County Industrial Education Center. This was thefirst class held on campus; the only other courses were extension courses.

September, 1962, the lEC opened its doors of the new campus with 59 students, 6 instructors, and 2administrators. It now had the facilities, equipment, and supplies for these curriculums: AutomotiveMechanics, Electronics, Drafting, Agricultural Business, Machine Shop, Air Conditioning andRefrigeration, and Sheet Metal Work.

April, 1964, our school was chosen asoneof the thirteen original schools to establish a Learning Lab.With the expected expansion of adult education, the lEC was provided with the facilities of the countyhome on Nash Street. This building was renamed the Adult Education Center.September, 1965, brought a big change: the lEC became Central Carolina Technical Institute. With

this change, CCTI was endowed with the power to award an Associate of Applied Science Degree for its

two year technical programs. This new status required the need for a change from eight trustees to atotal of twelve.

September, 1966, saw the birth of our annual, the Cencaro. Our first volume had 57 pages of studentactivities and 11 pages of ads. Volume 14 for the year 1980 will have 116 pages of students and their

activities.

August, 1969, Dr. J.F. Hockaday became the new president of CCTI. He was chosen by the Board ofTrustees to replace William A. Martin, who resigned to enter Graduate School at Duke University.

Fall, 1970, the student body was asked to make nominations for a school mascot. After all nominationswere in, a vote was held. From this process we became known as the CCTI Centaurs.

Fall, 1972, two steps forged us ahead. First, we started the night program for the curriculum courses.Second, we received full accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. This wasreaffirmed in 1976.

September, 1974, saw the start of the visiting artists in residence program. Through this program wehave had a classical guitarist, a folk singer, a potter, a classical pianist, and the current artist, a classicalguitarist. We also entered the Piedmont Athletic Confrence, which sponsors events in tennis, golf,

bowling, volleyball, Softball, and basketball.

September, 1977, the North Carolina General Assembly declared the Student Government AssociationPresident to be a nonvoting member of the Board of Trustees. The school year is 1979-1980 and we have made another big jump. In July, 1979, we became Central

Carolina Technical College. From one main building, which has been expanded, the campus has grownto include a Science Building, Mechanical Building, Learning Resource Center, Bell Building, VeterinaryMedical Laboratory, Telephony Building, Cosmetology Building, Administration Building, StudentCenter, and the Adult Education Building. This year has also seen construction started for an addition onthe LRC and a new Continuing Education Building.

CCTC has grown to include 1,962 students, 69 full time and 76 part time curriculum instructors, 181part time continuing education instructors, 17 aflministrators, and 12 voting and 1 nonvoting trustees(Fall, 79-80).

Instruction has expanded to include four areas: continuing education; General Education in

co-operation with Campbell University; vocational which includes Automotive Mechanics, Industrial

Maintenance Mechanics, Motorcycle Mechanics, Nurse Assistant, Practical Nurse Education, Radio &TV Broadcasting, Cosmetology, Telephony, Genera! Office, and Tool & Die; technical which includesAccounting, Agriculture Science and Mechanization, Banking and Finance, Business Administration,Corrections, Drafting and Design, Electronics Engineering, Industrial Management, Instrumentation,Paralegal, Secretarial Science, Telephone Technician, Law Enforcement, Real Estate, Recreation,Teacher Associate/Reading Option, and Veterinary Medical.

IN MEMORIAMWhat Are Policemen Made Of?From a Paul Harvey broadcast

A policeman is a composite of what all men are, a mingling of saint

and sinner, dust and diety.

Culled statistics wave the fan over the stinkers, underscoreinstances of dishonesty and brutality because they are

exceptional, unusual, not commonplace.Buried under the froth is the fact. Less than one-half of one-percent

of policemen misfit that uniform.

That's a better average than you'd find among clergymen. What is a policeman made of? He, of all men, is at once the most

needed and the most unwanted. He's a strangely nameless creature who is "Sir" to his face and

"fuzz" behind his back.

He must be such a diplomat that he can settle differences betweenIndividuals so that each will think he won.

But . . .

If the policeman is neat, he's conceited: if he's careless, he's a bum.If he's pleasant, he's a flirt; if he's not, he's a grouch. He must make, in an instant, decisions which would require months

for a lawyer.

But . . .

If he hurries, he's careless; if he's deliberate, he's lazy.

He must be first to an accident and infallible with a diagnosis. He must be able to start breathing, stop bleeding, tie splints and,

above all, be sure the victim goes home without a limp.

Or expect to be sued.

The police officer must know every gun, draw on the run and hit

where it doesn't hurt.

He must be able to whip two men twice his size and half his agewithout damaging his uniform and without being "brutal.

"

If you hit him, he's a coward; if he hits you, he's a bully.

A policeman must know everything — and not tell.

He must know where all the sin is — and not partake.

The policeman must, from a single human hair, be able to describethe crime, the weapon and the criminal — and tell you where thecriminal is hiding.

But . . .

If he catches the criminal, he's lucky; if he doesn't, he's a dunce. If he gets promoted, he has political pull. If he doesn't, he's a

dullard.

The policeman must chase bum leads to a dead end, stakeout tennights to tag one witness who saw it happen — but refuses to

remember. He runs files and writes reports until his eyes ache to build a case

against some felon who'll get dealed-out by a shameless shamusor an '"honorable" who isn't.

The policeman must be a minister, a social worker, a diplomat, atough guy and a gentleman.

And, of course, he'll have to be a genius . . .

For he'll have to feed a family on a policeman's salary.

Paul Harvey says, "Don't credit me with this mongrel prose, it hasmany parents,

at least 420 thousand of them, all POLICEMEN."
