In-House Training Programme on "Industrial Safety" was organised at Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd., Nigdi, Pune. The programme was conducted by Shri A. A. Raichur on 27th May, 2019 at Conference Room of HPCL. 35 Participants attended the program.

In-House Training Programme on “Defensive Driving” at IOCL, Navi Mumbai

In-House Training Programme on “Defensive Driving” was organised at Indian Oil Corporation Ltd., Vashi Terminal, Navi Mumbai for their drivers. The programme was conducted by the expert from the industry on 14th June 2019. 31 Participants took advantage of this training.

The Chapter in collaboration with Central Labour Institute, Safety Division DGFASLI, Ministry of Labour & Employment, Government of India organised 226th & 227th training course on Industrial Safety from 13th-15th May, 2019 & 12th-14th June, 2019 at the conference room, Central Labour Institute, Mumbai. For both training programs 23 participants from various industries were present.

One day Safety Training Programme at Cargo Gear Services (I) Pvt. Ltd.

One Day Safety training programme was organized for the Engineers and technicians of Cargo Gear Services (I) Pvt. Ltd. at Byculla, Mumbai. The participants were trained in Inspection Techniques for Testing & Examination of Lifting Machines, Items of Loose Gear, Pressure Vessels, Lift & Hoists etc.

NSC-MC organized the Inaugural Task Force Meeting on 18th April, 2019 at Royal Orchid Central Grazia, Navi Mumbai. 25 Task Force Members attended the meeting.

Advocacy of Road Safety in IndustriesNational Safety Council-Maharashtra Chapter and Directorate of Industrial Safety & Health (DISH), Government of Maharashtra is jointly working on the project called “Advocacy of Road Safety in Industries”. This initiative is facilitated by Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP). As a part of the project we have constituted a Task Force on Road Safety. It gives me great pleasure to announce that task force includes Government authorities such as Directorate of Industrial Safety & Health, Govt. of Maharashtra, Highway Police, Maharashtra State, Mumbai Traffic Police, Regional Transport Office, Maharashtra State and industrial representatives from Kalyan Ambernath Manufacturer’s Association (KAMA), Thane Manufacturer’s Association (TMA), Thane-Belapur Industries Association (TBIA), Taloja Manufacturer’s Association(TMA), Chembur Trombay MARG and also Road Safety Experts.

The Inaugural Task Force meeting was organized on 18th April, 2019 at Royal Orchid Central Grazia, Navi Mumbai. All members expressed the necessity of this initiative taken by NSC-MC; they also supported the concept of the project and

assured their contribution in preparing the guidelines and SOPs. We conducted the Task Force meeting on 16th May, 2019 at Thane Belapur Industries Association, Rabale.

NSC-MC & DISH jointly organized seminar on “Advocacy of Road Safety in Industries” on 26th June, 2019 at Navi Mumbai. The seminar was organized involving Task Force members; the purpose of the seminar was to present the concept of the project to more industrial organizations from identified Industrial Groups (MARGs). Chief Guest for the seminar was Mr Vinay Kargaonkar IPS, Additional Director General of Police, Traffic, Maharashtra State. Chairman/President of the selected Industrial Groups from Mumbai Metropolitan Region were also present. More than 100 participants from various industrial groups attended the seminar.I am happy to tell you that the seminar was a great success.

Executive Committee Meeting of NSC-MCA Meeting of the Executive Committee Members of the National Safety Council-Maharashtra Chapter was held on Saturday, 08.06.2019 at The Tata Power Co. Ltd., Trombay Thermal Power Station, Chembur - Mahul Road, Mahul, Chembur, Mumbai-74.

Environment is concerned with everything needed for our living. We need AIR, WATER, SUNLIGHT, PLANTS, ANIMALS and what not. If we think carefully everything of these items is from environment. good environment becomes, therefore, our basic living need. An authentic report published in Times of India dtd. 07.12.2018 had highlighted the following facts:• One death in every 8 deaths is due to pollution in our country.• The worst hit countries due to pollution in the world are:

Nepal, nigeria, Quatar, India and Saudi Arabia.• As far as our Country is concerned, the worst affected States

are: Delhi, U.P., Bihar, Haryana and Rajasthan.• As far as our Maharashtra is concerned, the pollution death

rate per lakh people is 86 to 87.• Delhi is not remaining behind. The pollution death rate in

Delhi State is above 65 per lakh people. Air Pollution accounted for 12.4 lakh deaths in India. 6.7 lakh deaths were due to outdoor particulate matter pollution whereas 4.8 lakh deaths were due to household air pollution. In these deaths over half of deaths due to pollution are under 70 year age group people. Friend, almost 84% of our working population works in INORGANISED SECTOR. As your know, who cares completely and systematically for the Safety, Health and Environment of such a large population? Infact, most of us show concern for the Occupational Health. Occupational Health aims at promotion and maintenance of health of workers and main part of the occupational Health Protection activity is provision of safe occupational environment to workers. What is this occupational environment? It is the sum of external conditions and influences which have a bearing on the health of working population. Basically, there are THREE TYPES of the interactions in the Working Environment:

1. Man and the Physical, Chemical and Biological agents, is the first interaction.

2. Man and the Machine/Equipment is the second interaction.3. Man and Man (i.e. coworker, supervisor, Team or group

leader) is the third interaction. Cheeks, Tests, Control and improvement is needed to maintain balance in all these three interactions to ensure proper Work-Environment to employees. As far as our Industry is concerned, what pollutes the environment? Industry throws hazardous dust, fumes, mists, smoke, smog particulate matter in the environment and also dropps untreated effluent on the land - both on earth and in water. For all of these pollutants control and treatment is there. Then what lacks? What lacks is this:• Our intention and opennerss to consider them ill.• A positive WILL to remove and control them the pollutants. We, in and around Mumbai, barring very few industries drop our untreated offluent in creeks and sea water. Do we know what should be quality of our efflunet? The QUALITY OF TREATED WATER EFFLUENT TO CREEK OR SEA should be as under:• PH should not be blow 5.5 and above 9.0 (PH is an indicator

of Acidity and Alkalinity)• Biological Oxygen Demand should not exceed 100mg/litre.• Chemical Oxygen Demand should not exceed 250mg/litre.• Oil/Grease should not exceed 10mg/litre.• Chromium should not exceed 0.1mg/litre.• Sulphur should not exceed 5mg/litre.• Dissolved Oxygen should be minimum se <5mg/litre. Here, I would like to stress the another need of keeping the environment clean and that is to use the SOLAR ENERGY efficiently. Solar Energy will reach the earth if the environment is clean and clear. The use of more solar energy will minimise the Power Generation by using COAL or OIL as a fuel and thus minimise gaseous pollution and Noise Pollution.
