“New Beginnings”
The Gregorian Calendar, which interestingly enough is also
known as the “Christian Calendar” is the one that we utilize in our
daily lives. It begins with January 1 and ends with December 31.
The “Liturgical Calendar,” also known as the “Church Calen-
dar” (not the one on Angela’s desk mind you), is slightly different.
The Liturgical Calendar begins with the season of “Advent” – the
four Sundays prior to Christmas – and ends the Sunday prior to
the following year’s Advent which is known as “Christ the King
Sunday.”
So, we have just ended a liturgical year and in a few short days
we begin a new liturgical year and – a month from now – a new
Gregorian year.
The calendar isn’t the only place where we can find new begin-
nings. Christ invites all of us to a new beginning in him.
At Centenary, we will be exploring a new beginning with our lead-
ership in 2016. Inside you will find the names of leaders and a
new approach to ministry that builds on what we have done in the
past and is looking to put a greater emphasis on making disciples
and living out our vision.
So, let us enter all of these new seasons by prayerfully asking
Christ to order our steps and guide us on this path; a path of new
beginnings.
Grace and Peace,
Willard

Church Council Meeting Minutes Summary
September 21, 2015
The meeting was called to order at 6:34 pm.
The group shared prayer requests and praises.
The minutes of the August 17, 2015 meeting were approved. Consent Calendar reports were read
and accepted.
Tracy Bertram stated that the Finance Committee had met and were working on a draft budget for
2016.
Vance Burnett speaking on behalf of the Trustee Committee informed the council that Thoroughbred
Contractors would commence repairing the brick in April 2016. Currently, they are taking bids for
concrete repair for the steps down to the kitchen and steps and ramp to the parking lot. He also
brought a request to the council that he received from Bonnie Burks Gray that two families have re-
quested that Whitie Gray design a memorial stained glass window. The council discussed the request
and decided that this matter should be handed over to a sub-group to review the request and ad-
dress concerns with regards to which windows , fire codes, etc.
Holly asked Pastor Willard to discuss the Leadership 2016 Proposal. A handout was given to the
members. Pastor indicated that a prayer team and fellowship team would be added to the program-
matic teams. Five members would be added to the Nominations Committee so that the team chairs
do not have to their teams. SPRC, Finance, and Trustees would be combined for an Administrative
Operations Team with three members to each class to deal with property, personnel, and finance.
The council can then meet quarterly to focus outward and expand. District Superintendent Paul Fry-
man said that this proposal is okay per the spirit of the Book of Discipline. Willard then asked the
council for permission to pull the Nominations Committee together to bring to the council what this
proposal would look like for 2016. Trisha Hobbs asked that consideration be given with regard to this
restructuring and how enacted policies would be impacted.
Holly Husband provided an update on the 8:48 congregational calls survey. She received a mixed-
bag of comments. Some stated they attended out of habit, while others stated to being moved by
the music offered at this service time. After some discussion, the consensus of the council was to ask
Jamie Buchanan if he would be willing to lead the 8:48 worship for six more weeks while the council
discerns what to do going forward.
Other Business. Pastor Willard stated that the Wednesday meals will cease at the end of the Fall se-
mester. With low attendance it is no longer financially feasible to continue catering meals next se-
mester.
With October 19th falling during SCPS Fall Break, the next council meeting was moved to October
26t, 2015.
Mark Burks, Lay Leader, reported that Laity Sunday is October 18th and that Bonnie Burks Gray is
helping to plan the worship services and has several people who will speak about the meaning they
receive from their respective mission projects.
With no other reports, Pastor Willard closed the meeting with prayer and the meeting adjourned at
8:26 pm.

Thank you to my church family for bringing food and sending cards during my three-
